I was just listening to Avril, as you do, and it struck me that some of you avoid this kinda crap and so will not have heard the excellent bass lines, so here's one of them - give it a chance! The bass doesn't kick in for a while though so be patient! And here's another which I also think is fantastic Ignore the stupid videos and just listen!
And what bass riffs inspire you?
I just play the blues scale! I don't think I take a lot of inspiration from other metal bassists - I like to get the guitars playing something chordy and I'll play something under it a metal sorta mode... lydian or aeolian or whatever!
If I had a choice of playing metal, playing country, or shagging Beth Ditto I'd pick country
[BigBeefChief]I'd shag Beth Ditto[/BigBeefChief]
I've spotted your problem.
I had to look twice before I realised what you were getting at, you disgraceful person! No, seriously, is there nobody out there to make sweet music with me?

None whatsoever..! Perhaps I should have made it clear that absolutely any musician who fancies a jam is welcome?
Me and my band tend to write at practices. We don't really have Stage moves At a gig, you just do what you do don't ya?? Jake
Some bands maybe (and I've never been in a band with rehearsed stage moves), but if you're going to have a carefully choreographed stage show or if you're going to swing your bass around your head, it's probably best to practise it! I'm guessing Nirvana just improvised though

what was the first band you joined
queenofthedepths replied to ashgeezer's topic in General Discussion
When a former drummer friend of mine discovered I was getting a bass, back in school, he insisted that I join his new band - little did I know that he wanted an absolute beginner bassist coz nobody else was stupid enough to have him! So we had an evil, awful drummer, a poor guitarist, a reasonably good guitarist, an unreliable singer I found, and me... we played a few terrible gigs with a different line-up each time, but after half a year I'd improved beyond the abilities of these guys and went on to do some cool stuff with the good guitarist (see the Cathode Ray Tube Beef Curry in my sig )! And since then, I've mostly been in good bands -
Good grief, you're lucky you didn't decapitate someone! There's an interesting thought. If a chicken can run around for 10 seconds after you've chopped it's head off, how long do you reckon a drummer can maintain the beat under the same circumstances?
Perhaps if you do it at the right moment, it'll stop him from speeding up as he goes?

I think it's also important to remember that for £100 you can get a bass which is very easy to play but may well not sound brilliant... anything on top of that goes towards making it a nice-sounding bass, pretty much (okaeey, so there are lots of other factors but this is the big one, coz aesthetic appearance is entirely subjective - pick something YOU like the look of) Anyway, no matter how good the bass is, there's no point spending loads more on that than the amp you're playing it through, because a crap amp will make any bass sound crap... remember, the chain is only as strong as the weakest link, and when it comes to bass-playing, the chain is as follows: Your fingers, to the bass itself, through a cable (and maybe effects pedals), into your amp and out into the room you're playing in! Firstly, your own talent will improve quickly so don't worry about that! The bass itself should be the one you like, cables are cheap and easily replaceable, effects are completely customisable, the amp should be the best you can afford and the room you're playing in depends on whether you're practising in your bedroom, jamming in a rehearsal studio with a noisy band, or playing a gig of whatever size... it's important to have equipment appropriate to what you're going to do with it and if you're after the all-round best gear you can afford, it's wise to have stuff which is consistent in quality... of the many basses I've owned, just 2 of them (which I still have) have cost me more than your budget of £300, so IMO that's more than plenty for a beginner bass and in your situation I would spend more on an amp! This post has degenerated into a bit of a mess as I've written it so if it makes little sense, just follow everyone else's advice
I don't envy you the well-meaning neighbour. When I was a bit older than you (back in the stone age) I got talked into an acoustic guitar that was way above my needs or comfort level. Unless you're going to be playing with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, in a couple of years (!) you'll be wiping beer off it and falling off the stage with it like the rest of us. Go with your instincts, get something solid and not too expensive and don't let the "grown ups" talk you out of it.
+lotseses
I have seen (and been wowed by) the Yamaha BB614. That's not to say that I *have* to get this one and am open to criticism etc for this impulse choice
If that's how you feel, you should probably get it! Unless you see anything else that really excites you... if it's gonna make you want to pick it up and play it every time you see it, that's exactly what you need

My first ever bass, a horrible Encore precision copy; even though I pretty much never played after I got a better bass a couple of months later, it was still my first bass love and I wish I had it around to remind me how far I've come! I've never moved on anything that was really useful! Then again, I've never owned anything really expensive

I'm just listening to their latest album, the_Ascension, and the bass lines are much more prominent and interesting than the older stuff, so I wondered if they had a new bassist... off I go to Wikipedia, and apparently the bassist is a founding member and also writes all of the music! Not sure what to make of that, but it's damned cool
Extrapolating (loosely) from the data on the chart, I'd suggest that 3Hz is above B-2, but below C-2... As long as everyone stays at concert pitch, it looks like we're safe!!
I have to point out that the note immediately below C-2 is not B-2 but B-3! And also that 3Hz is below that, even! It'd be between F#-3 and G-3

the benefit of quiet band practises
queenofthedepths replied to ahpook's topic in General Discussion
the drummer was using a set of electronic drums, fed through the quitarists home studio monitors
When I play mine with the headphones on, my mum still complains about the noise (just from me hitting the pads)... and I'm not a heavy-hitting drummer... still, it'd be great to have a practise like that where we can hear ourselves properly, even if we're never gonna have a gig like that (I don't get why gigs need to be so loud, either...) -
Queenofthedepths - how is the Kahler for you btw? Enjoying it?
It's absolutely fantastic! I thought it'd be awkward to use whilst playing, like I've found with guitars, but I guess that's coz I'm just a crap guitarist - it's actually really easy and loads of fun Not sure my bandmates share that point of view though... yet!

Or you can get a bridge with a whammy bar and attach it yourself! This is hanging right in front of me so I had to take a pic

Teenage daughter wants to learn bass!
queenofthedepths replied to bean52's topic in General Discussion
also i saw guitar pro mentioned - its good for learning songs because you can slow down the bass part and hear exactly how it should be played, but i dont think its worth getting as a beginner tbh
It worked well for me as a beginner! Probably the most useful tool I've ever had as a musician -
Of course i'm assuming that you play an instrument... if not, drop me a PM or something and i can dig up a guide how to read tabs and a few links to some good tabs/guitar pro file sites and all that stuff if you want her to teach herself (i did it). Oh and i can explain what guitar pro actually IS haha (very useful is what it is!)
+1 on guitar pro being awesome - as for all that advice, why not start a thread so everyone can see it? That's the kind of thing I wish I'd known when I started -
Something like this?

Otherwise she doesant really get bass, She knows its important to the song but cant really stand to hear it on its own without a band. Or maybe its because i cant play!
It's clearly just your basses, man - remember what mine said about them!
