However I also play 8-string which in theory should be a far easier instrument to mimic using effects, but I still haven't come across one that would be an acceptable substitute to the real thing, so not holding out too much hope for the de-fretter...
Yeah, the octaver on there is pretty dire as well (and don't even think about using those two effects at the same time coz they're on the same section...) - I've just spent an unsatisfying few minutes trying to get a good distortion and autowah but I've decided to leave that for next band practise where I can hear the results in context and get some feedback from the rest of the band - it's making me consider going down the individual pedal route, possibly with a different multi-effects as well... so if you do decide to get one (despite my bad advertising, it's very useful for a lot of things), PM me!
 2.
You have a de- and re-fretting pedal? Cool! Where can I get one? ;-)
I don't really want to detract from the irony of that remark since it's the reason I take 2 basses, buttt there's actually a "defretter" effect on my ME-50B (and presumably a smaller Boss pedal?) which is perhaps 50% convincing - not a great substitute for the real thing, but it does have the advantages of saving you from buying and learning an extra instrument and you can switch it on and off in the middle of a song!
 3.
The GBW35 looks like a good one, although at £508 from Thomann somewhat more than I was hoping. Anyone out there got one of these taht they don't want to keep??? (well you've got to ask)
If you can find me a delicious replacement for not too much more than you're willing to pay me, I may be tempted :brow: :brow: :brow: Or did I just want an excuse to use that emoticon? Another suggestion worth considering is first of all getting a 5-string similar to your favourite bass and playing that for a while so you're certain it's a 5er you want and then get it de-fretted! When I first wanted to properly try fretless I basically did that
 4.
I am crying as I type (on the inside) as I can't afford the £90 it'd cost me from Manchester to Milton Keynes and back to get that fretless. Crying.

what on earth makes u think itd cost that much?? saver return about 50 i would imagine

You would imagine or you would know ?
I just checked (coz I'm sad like that) and an advance single would cost you £13... so £26 both ways if you just book it in advance
 5.
too much like a bass
Blasphemy!!!
 6.
Martin Petersen makes a similar design:
Now that made me cry out aloud in delight! Is it tuned with the EAD of a bass and ADGBE of a guitar?
 7. I've got 9 basses: GWB35 which is my main bass - if I got a 5-string fretless I preferred and didn't fancy keeping this as a back-up, I'd see no reason to keep it Traben Chaos 4 fretted which is the other one I take to band practises - between the 2 of them they cover all of our songs 2 acoustics (1's fretless) so I don't have to plug in whenever a song comes on that I want to play along to 4-string Stingray copy I keep at my parents' house to bash about on The other four (5, 7 and 8-string and my semi-fretless) are just for getting different sounds when writing songs or whatever - maybe I'll use them for something other than recording my own stuff or whatever at some point - I tried the 7-string at a rehearsal a few weeks ago and didn't get on with it, but there's no harming in trying, right? I refuse to get stuck in a rut and every bass deserves a chance to shine before I move it on - if I had the money and space there'd certainly be plenty of room for more, different basses in my collection
 8.
Yeah, I'm gonna be applying for more places later on this week, maybe this time I'll get somewhere *crosses fingers*. But for now I think I might try selling some pointless stuff I have, like my Dean V. Though might be hard to shift as its got a huge dent in one of the arms from my mum kicking my old ME-50B into it
I wish my bass had my ME-50B embedded in it! That'd be quite useful... or maybe not
 9.
Also, I can't afford anything nowadays, like, I haven't had a new set of strings on my bass for a whole year as I just can't afford them as I have no form of income what so ever. The threshold for EMA is ridiculous as well, £30,000 a year is enough for two people to live on, not a whole family. Sure both my parents work, but this still can't bring enough money for anything
In over 3 years of playing bass, I have NEVER bought a new set of bass strings! I just like that rotten sound Don't your parents get child benefit until you're 19?
 10.
hahaha drive up north, grangemouth goes on strike the pumps run dry and you would be stuck up in the north for ever. for ever i tell you!
Cuts the trip in half at least!
 11.
EMA is a good thing IMO. It does get spent on luxury items, but a fair bit of the time it's helped me out for important thing when i've had no money. I agree, i think everyone should get it (apart from kids with jobs) because when my parents were earning good money (just over EMA limit) they could never have afforded to give me £30 a week, now my mum doesn't live with us and my dad was redundant for the best part of last year it was pretty handy. But that's my two cents there.
Hmm, you have a fair point but firstly I'd say it's unfair not to give it to those of us who got a job (get paid less for working more?? Makes no sense...) and it also should be less or perhaps schools/colleges should be given money to pay for stuff for like books and paper - the trouble with giving students an incentive to stay in education is generally that if they need a monetary incentive not to get a job then they're probably not enthusiastic enough about education to take it seriously - if, on the other hand, they're so poor that they can't afford not to work unless they receive EMA... well, THEN they should be getting EMA... but I don't think this is the case most of the time
 12.
Do you know how hard im trying NOT to post some actual porn?!
Hahaha, you teenagers are all the same (I should know - I was one until a few months ago) - unless it's bass porn, keep it to yourself!
 13.
No, QUIT your whinging, you could be in bristol which i heard is just full of people telling other people to quit whinging!
Hahahahahahahaha! Full of? I'm not that big! Someone slightly younger than me post some porn and get this thread back on topic!
 14.
Quite yer whinging and be greatful your not in poverty.
Quit YOUR whinging and be glad you're not in China, where basschat is probably censored and you couldn't have logged on to tell me not to whinge
 15. Too busy spending all the EMA he saved up, going out drinking or whatever, perhaps? You're right about not learning the value of money
 16.
What is EMA? Am I the only who doesn't know? Or is it an English thing?
It's Education Maintenance Allowance - if your household income is below a certain level and you're in further education (bursaries are just for higher education), you get paid £30 a week or in some cases more... I think - here are some of the reasons I think it's ridiculous: 1. It's generally spent on luxury items rather than anything to do with education such as books/stationary etc 2. A lot of the people who get it actually have a higher household income than they declare, because of benefits or untaxable income or whatever... same goes for most benefits, really 3. The student gets it rather than the parents who are supporting them 4. In a lot of cases, they really don't need the money and could just get a job 5. My parents earned just above the threshold so I had to get a job to afford my basses - yep, I'm biased
 17.
As always, I would say the best value for money and sounding fretless 5 is the Ibanez GWB35. A bit more than what you are looking for, but worth it.
+1 I was just about to say that myself!
 18. You're lucky - my cat scratches my uncarpeted combo anyway!
 19.
^^ you and bigbeefchief sound like guitarists...
!
 20. Just bought a cab from him on Sunday - lovely guy, great deal with no hassle Even threw in a speaker cable Would definitely buy from him again
 21.
Spieluhr by Rammstein. We do loads of Rammstein numbers. The basslines are easy/repetitive, but it takes a while to learn the lyrics by heart...
That's a really cool song - my favourite by Rammstein I find their lyrics easier to learn than English ones for some reason! This weekend I've learned: Are You Gonna Go My Way - Lenny Kravitz I Disappear - Metallica Purple Haze - Jimi Hendrix Cigarettes and Alcohol - Oasis Circles - Incubus Bullet in the Head - Rage Against the Machine Black Hole Sun - Soundgarden my guitarists' suggestions for covers - I turned up for practise today and no-one had learned them
 22. I'd recommend one of these: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Greek...logical_figures Or one of these: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Norse...logical_figures Or one these: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Etrus...logical_figures etc, etc... I'm sure there are plenty more! Pick something nice an obscure but cool-sounding and then you can tell people what it means if they ask you "Greek Goddess of the sea's bounty" sounds fairly cool but with a name like Doris, it's probably worth leaving
 23. I heard he's got at least one date booked (in South Wales) - not sure about any details or other gigs though!
 24.
So why not stop wasting time talking bollocks and do some practice, go out and gig and sound like the bollocks ?
Right back at ya - I don't mean to be rude, but it appears that you do? You don't wanna talk bollocks, so why are you complaining so much on here? To us it's just friendly banter; not a waste of time at all! I'm a student so I have nothing to do except r*v*s* for easy *x*ms, so today I'll get 3 hours of band rehearsal and plenty of practise on my own as well as a lot of time "wasted" socialising on basschat... instead of watching TV, which is what you call productive? Sorry again if I seem rude, but please stop trying to bring us down for having a fun discussion - arguments like "OMG how can you say The Ox is over-rated?!! He's the best thing ever!" are all part of the fun - telling us the discussion is futile is just unreasonable - it's just bass chat! If I say Cliff Burton is over-rated (and I do), it's because thousands of Metallica fans seem to worship him, which, IMO, is more than he deserves... Flea gets the same treatment and so do many others - the fact that they're better bassists than I am doesn't enter into it - I can have opinions on the merits of flautists but I've never even touched a flute* Anyone can be over-rated and we're all entitled to state our opinions - in fact, I WANT to know what people think *I'm pretty sure someone will drag an innuendo out of them
 25.
flea is a great player man and he definitely doesnt blow his own trumpet
Hmm, whose is this then? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ju1RaX9Vkho
