1. If its a size thing, more than a weight thing, you have plenty of good options to check out. My recommendation will obviously be Barefaced - but the best comes at a price, and a waiting time. However, there are some S12s and Compacts for sale on here at the moment. Ohms-wise, if you want a single cab solution, then go for a 4 Ohm: this will draw the max power from the head. Having said that, I've been happily using a single 8 Ohm Compact for over two years now: it is a very sensitive cab so every watt of energy that is fed into it, comes out with more decibels (loudness). Most amps are rated with a minimum requirement of 4 Ohms loading (a few do 2 Ohms). So, you could use an 8 or 4 Ohm cab, or two 8 ohm cabs (which combine to present a 4 Ohm load to the amp). The AH300-7 you mention is indeed nice, and Trace amps are known to be very loud for their ratings. No idea what sort of venues you play, but my 250w TE head fills large rooms easily and I shall be using it this coming Friday to fill a large open pub, in a rock/pop covers band. Their min loading requirement is 4 Ohms, so go with my comments above. That head will be very loud into a decent cab, either 4 or 8 Ohm. There's so much to tell, and I don't want to overload you with information! Geoff
 2.
To be honest, even the heaviest amps tend to be a one-handed carry. especially if they have great handles like the Trace amps. It's the cabs that do you in...
Exactly this really. Lightweight, easily moved cabs that have fabulous tone and loudness have been a godsend for me.
 3. Hi There's nothing wrong with your approach at all, this is basically what I have done. I went from heavy Ashdown cabs to lightweight Barefaced cabs, but still using heavy-ish Ashdown ABM and now Trace Elliot heads. I'm currently using a 1989 TE AH200, and a '94 GP7SM250 head with my Super 12, and before that a Compact. I still have the latter cab, but it's not getting any airplay at the moment due to the recent arrival of the S12. I get the great TE tone in much greater clarity and louder than I ever have before. These cabs really do allow every nuance of dynamic and tonal variation to shine through. My Little Bastard 30 also sounds great through my BF Compact or Super 12. I've tried and owned a few of the lighter class D heads but always end up coming back to the 'heavyweights' because of the tone. I don't find the TE heads at all difficult to carry due to their size. A big heavy cab is a completely different thing, and my Compact weighs in at 12Kg, the Super 12 is 18kg and just 5 inches taller, so both are dead easy to move about. As ever with these things, if you can get the opportunity to try your Trace head with a few lightweight cabs before you buy, then you will be able to make the right decision. I'd definitely recommend it though, based on my experience. Cheers Geoff
 4. Are you using the valve drive? A dying pre-valve could cause symptoms like that. When you say you are cranking it past 6/10, you mean the output knob I assume? If so then I would have thought a dying valve would be heard at all volumes - but it could be just that it isn't noticed until higher output volumes. Do you get the same problem when the valve is switched out?
 5. Steve, coincidentally I've listened to more of your work lately - very impressive indeed. And touring with my fave lady bassist? What a pairing! Unfortunately I won't be able to see you this time around, but good luck. Cheers Geoff
 6.
Ernie Balls cobalts - rusted within a week or two (absolutely shocking) and they had a horrible tension/feel to them.
Oh yes I forgot about them ones. Couldn't agree more. Like I said to Shania Twain at the time, Those Strings Don't Impress Me Much... Who would have thought it, eh?
 7. Beautiful instrument - a cracking colour combination of black/black/maple. Delicious.
 8.
Gonna be selling my Yammy BB424X and Hartke LH500 to fund it if i get on with it.
What colour BBx? Colour me interested...
 9.
Just written off the next few years xmas pressies. Incoming Shuttle 9.2 head to go with my new Barefaced BB2 cab that i only got a few weeks ago. I am in the massive doghouse! Gonna be selling my Yammy BB424X and Hartke LH500 to fund it if i get on with it. Ps if anyone was thinking of getting one too, theres only 1 left as of this afternoon.
You will need a massive doghouse to put all this new gear lol
 10.
Actually she's still going on about that sonic blue P bass...... asking me how it would sound compared to my other gear etc.
I'm beginning to like you less and less....
On the sister front... I'm meeting up with her family next weekend. I'll enquire about bass gear preferences / availability and get back to you...
I'm beginning to like you more and more....
 11.
I thought a speed knob was a term for premature ejaculation lol
Come again...?
 12.
I think it's cos they're bigger with a large flat edge, so you get a bigger turn quicker. My missus doesn't like my speed knob though. Can't think why.

Speed Knobs? I thought they were the spotty herberts that wheelspin outside the local burger outlet in their Saxos.

Gibson marketing department?
Three very plausible answers.....
 13.
All sorted... apparently I now have 183 reward points...
If I'm not careful I may soon be on very negative 'Home Points'....
 14.
I tried that approach yesterday then involuntarily ordered the ShuttleMax 12.2 to go with the 212 I accidentally ordered the previous day...
I suppose your girlfriend told you to buy those as well? So, about her sister.....
 15.
Don't really know, I'm after a decent overdrive/distortion pedal. Pref. EBS Multidrive. Other than that, what have you got?
Oooh nothing like that to offer I'm afraid. Probably only a Vintage V4 P copy to trade with right now, which is probably of no interest to you at all. Let me mull for a bit.... You say you travel about a bit - ever down my way (Brighton)?
 16. Cracking amps, these. Delightful tone, simple controls and will surprise you with much loudness through decently sensitive coneage. Bit of a bargain price too. Your learned colleague....
 17. For sale or trade, you say? Anything in particular on the trade front you might be looking for? Cheers Geoff
 18. Clearly a quiet news evening for me. For some bizarre reason during Truckers on BBC1, the following question popped up in my befuzzled head: where do Speed Knobs get the name from? You know the things - vol/tone knobs numbered from 1 to 10, like the ones on my two BBs. Couldn't find much on t'internet, apart from someone selling Speed Knobs, with numbers up to 11. Now there's loud. So - where does the name come from? Is it because they are so easy and quick to use, what with the numbers clearly showing the setting? Geoff
 19. Did they indicate how much this work would cost? I have no idea of the value of these things, but I'm sure someone here will have some input on that. Whether its worth having the work done depends on the overall value and servicing costs I guess. Welcome to Basshcat, btw,
 20. Hi Marcus Any pics? What sort of flightcase? Does it have full front and rear covers etc? Cheers Geoff
 21.
What's a decent compact cab to go with the LB30 to make it sound justice? I'm using a TC BC212 at the moment.
I've not heard the LB30 through a BC212, but I have been using it with my BF Compact for the best part of two years now to good effect. The sensitive cab makes the most of every watt that the LB is able to provide, and you can go from olde worlde Mowtown to middy rock in the flick of the Bass Shift switch. The tonal variations of the head are nicely reproduced by the Compact. If you get a chance to try this pairing, I'd recommend it. Cheers Geoff
 22. Hey Gareth, I reckon the LB30 into a Compact may well scratch that itch. Cheers Geoff
 23. Cheers Dad. Now that felt like an odd thing to say...
 24. The beauty of using the mobile site is I can't tell where you are. Where are you? Cheers Geoff
 25.
She does... nice girl... bass guitar preferences unverified though.
Ok cool. I will PM over an application form with pictures of different basses. If she picks the BB2024, she's in... ;-)
