1.
Arranged a trade of one my 5'ers for an orange BB414 , all goes well picking up tomorrow!
Nice one, and a much better deal than the shop was offering.
2.
I paid three fifty for my used 1024 with hard case last Christmas. Look around for a bargain, bobbyk has a 424 for sale here at a very good price.
Now that's what I call a bargain!
3. There was a rash of 414s for sale on here not that long ago, including a few orange ones. Maybe put something in the wanted section when you have the money, or perhaps offer a trade.
4.
Yes the neck is lovely in the 414 compared to 424,it seemed a bit nicer finished too. Might be a moot point though the shop still wanted money on top of the 3 guitars in wanted to trade. Probably have to sell private to make this happen!
Blimey they appear to be hard work lol. For info I paid £150 for a fab condition black 414 on here, and I've seen others go for similar amounts. The metallic orange is particularly delightful!
5.
I didn't realise the 414 had a slimmer neck - I love the neck on my 415, hope the 1025 I'm looking to get one day is the same dimensions!
As I understand it the necks are Identical between the 42x and 102x ranges. Just the nut and possibly the tuners and fretwork differ. However I believe there is a neck difference between the 41x and 102x ranges.
6. I have a 414 and a 1024, and have played the 424. Honestly I reckon the 414 would be the one to go for. The neck is slimmer and easier to move around. The pups on my 414 are defo louder than my 1024 with same strings and setup. My 1024 just has something about it that raises the bar, build and tone I think. Between the 2 you mention I don't think the 414 won't disappoint in any way.
7.
I was tempted by the MiBass 550 until it was discontinued for the simple Version 2.0. Three tone controls. Less power. Give me more knobs, sliders, watts, and meters! More colored lights and speaker jacks. So I got another MAG 600.
Slight thread hijack but how do you find the mag600? I had one a while back and loved it. Have you got the new evo 3 version?
8. I've had an EB180-15, a MAG 600 head and now an ABM. I'd say the EB and MAG are close in their circuit topolgy - just different power capabilities. Tonally I found them to be quite similar, but the MAG head sounded astonishing when paired with decent cabs. Loud, tight (believe it or not for an Ashdown), and totally reliable. I think the weak point is probably the speaker section on the EB, and separate cabs work wonders with the MAG head - depending on which ones you go for of course. Certainly gives you more versatility. I reckon the EQ frequencies on the EB and MAG ranges are pretty much perfect - and in some ways better chosen than those on the ABM. The big one for me is the 100Hz Bass control on the EB/MAG. I found this gave a significant oomph to the sound, without wasting lots of energy on unnecessary low frequencies. As ever the only way to know for certain is to try for yourself. I think £160 for a MAG400 might be a bit on the high side - but if it sounds good to you, is loud enough for your needs and is not battered, then it's probably worth it. Cheers Geoff
9. Thanks for getting some pics up - very nice too. Mulling at the moment still.....
10.
Any views on the Ampeg PF 500 ? Heard some rumours they can be unreliable. In a fight, which one would win ? Mi bass 550 or PF 500 ?
I've owned and gigged both. The PF wins on power and has a great compressor , and there's an 800watt version out now at a fab price.
11. What about using the lb30 for stage volume, and DI into FOH? I've done this and works rather well: the DI out is tapped from the output transformer.
12. I've just checked my LB30 schematic and the volume control is post effects, in fact it is right before the power stage. Cheers Geoff
13. Interesting experiment. As long as you have a load on the LB30 output transformer, then it is worth a punt. However, that PPC thingy will probably struggle if you have any sort of volume coming out of the LB, although assuming the volume is post-effects this won't be a problem. I built myself an 8 Ohm dummy load using a set of high-power wire-wound resistors. I own both the LB30 and LB550, and in my opinion the latter does come quite close to the former tonally. However, you won't get the special sound of output tubes going into saturation of course - but the pre-amp sound makes up for a lot of that. I also had the MiBass 550 for a while, and found it lacking. At the time I was convinced it was the pre-amp stage that was the problem, and now I've been using the LB550 for gigs I think I may have been correct (for once). It's the only class D head I've enjoyed using, and which has come up to my expectations. I'd be interested to hear your findings, should you decide to try this out. Cheers Geoff
14. Hi, any chance of some all - round pics? Cheers Geoff
15. Cheers for that Ian. If I can't get my Freeport sorted I may invest in one of these. Cheers Geoff
16. A timely thread as my superb Sennheiser Freeport which has had constant trouble free use for about 4 years has suddenly started mis-behaving. Unexpected volume drop-outs, random poor signal. All the connections are good, new battery - it's rather annoying. I now realise how much I rely on it and having to go back to one of those long cable thingies at the weekend was a shock to the system: I couldn't get out front to do a proper sound check, and I was stuck on stage the whole evening. No fun at all. That AKG looks looks like a great deal, as I cannot afford to fork out for one of those fancy pricey ones. Anyone used one of them in anger? Cheers Geoff
17.
Orange terror bass 1000 into a Barefaced Dubster.
Holy Moses, that setup must be quite something!
18. Our keys man uses a Behringer 15" combo, cant remember which one - perhaps BX300?, which has 4 input channels, mixer etc. He uses it for 2 keyboards, and we've also put a guitar through it a couple of times when we've run some jam nights at local pubs. Works fine, and certainly loud enough.
19.
The cabs I'd recommend would be the Barefaced Super12T and Bergantino CN212. Or you could add another Compact for a huge sounding rig.
From experience I'd say a dual Compact stack is exactly that. Also modular and highly portable.
20. Looks interesting to me. Good to see the semi-paraletic EQ make a return.
21. First a MiBass, now a PiBass! What's next? A BiBass for the confused or curious? Or perhaps a DiBass sold exclusively in Wales? There's nice ;-)
22. I had an SX P bass for a while. A good player, let down by poor quality hardware. The tuners were made from cheese so I replaced them with Wilkinson ones. To be honest my money would go on the Vintage brand. Cheers Geoff
