Looking for a cheap/light to go with a Ashdown MAG300 head
RandomBass replied to Mofo46's topic in Amps and Cabs
Ive got one of these too, very impressed with it actually. Great construction, tweeter is good and has a variable attenuator. Weighs just over 20kg iirc. Bloody good value for the price and will suit your MAG very well. Im having a bit of a clear out of gear at the moment if you are interested... Geoff -
I just bought Dave's TE AH200 head. We struck a good deal and I popped over to give it a tryout - my first play on a headless too! Top chap, recommended. Cheers Geoff

SOLD now, thanks. Right folks I'm having a review of my current gear glut - it was a New Year resolution to myself. First up is my Vintage V4 Tony Butler. The Black/Maple combination is just beautiful, and it plays rather well too . In mint condition, apart from a tiny nick on the top edge of the headstock which is hardly visible. No idea how I did that grrr. Postage might be problematic as I dont have any suitable sturdy protective boxes - however, if the interest is there we might be able to sort something. I will get some pictures sorted asap. Stock web pictures give an idea of how it looks, but I know there's nothing quite like images of the actual item. Cheers Geoff

Good title. If there's a Clash there, then perhaps time to take stock - it's no fun like that.
Hi Geoff. Well i'm still in my honeymoon period with it - but its simply a staggeringly good bass from every perspective. However its really the tone that sets it apart. Looks identical to its cousins - but whats under the hood is quite different. There's loads of marketing guff about it on the yamaha site - but the upshot is its hand-built and the wood has been treated in various ways to make it more resonant. I think the pups are upgraded etc. Honestly couldn't say which of these upgrades makes the most impact - or maybe its just the sum of its parts. To be honest I suspect you wouldn't notice much difference between 1024 & 2024 just to pick them up in a shop. But when you plug it in, you really know where you're money's going. I don't think I've ever played a better sounding bass. Still grinning 2 months later (despite the empyty wallet). Well worth a trip somehere to try one out
Thanks for this. Certainly plenty of food for thought. Once I have rationalised my current gear glut (lol) I shall have a clearer picture of my financials
I think (corrections welcome) that they originally had the blue coned driver, so I'd be wondering if this has had the speaker replaced at some point. In which case, I'd check to make sure it's an 8ohm one in there before connecting an additional cab.
Yeah I think you are correct about the blue cones. My old combo had a blue cone. To the OP: double check the speaker impedance before connecting an extension cab, just to be on the safe side. Very nice looking combo, by the way. Quite a rare one and it looks in great condition.
says on the site they will be "uploading loads more information" so I guess there's more detail on its way. Probably find their marketing team is all at NAMM! I'd like to know the dimensions and weight of the new neo range.
I hadn't noticed that, so fair play to them. Thanks for pointing that out. I notice from your sig you have a BB2024X - what are your impressions of it, if you don't mind me asking? I recently bought a BB414 on BC and it is the easiest player I've ever had. I thought my Jazz was good until I played the 414. And what a fabulously versatile sound too - ideal for all those different covers my band does. I'm toying with the idea of a 1024 - so what does the 2024 bring? (apart from an empty wallet in my case lol) Cheers Geoff
Yamaha BB424, or 424X if you like a pickguard.
Definitely this
Just wish they show more specs on their products specifically Freq Range and Sensitivity on their cabs. I've been thinking about getting a Mi10 for small gigs and home practise with the shuttle but i don't know if it will have enough highs (or lows)...
Yeah I'm with you on that one. That's one area they should have got sorted, a great opportunity missed. It's almost like they are afraid to put them up there. Take a leaf out of some of the other manufacturers which offer very comprehensive product details and specification, not just the usual marketing blurb.

Just noticed this, whilst busy at work Looks like Ashdown have launched their new website - which also has new products on it, including lightweight 400W ABM combos. Looks like its class D taking over in ABM now, which started with the new 1000 and 2000 W heads. I wonder how long the ABM500 will last before that gets the same treatment....?

Yeah a 2x15 would be perfect. Although it would look hilarious - like that alien in Men In Black movie, where they shrunk his head lol...

Having the Bass on 3 oclock is the main problem - way too much! Try all eq flat to start with, and take it from there. The VU meter measures the preamp signal going to the Output control, so will be affected by the settings of the eq section, hence the big swing of the needle

My Little Bastard does the trick very nicely for me. It's hardly a powerhouse, but those glorious 30watts through enough speakers really do get me going. And if i need a little more, the o/p transformer tapped DI is there. Cheers Geoff
I recently had a fretless ebony board fitted to my black BB414 by luthier Andy Viccars. Over the last week or so, I had the idea of swapping the neck over onto one of my orange metallic BB414's so that I'd have matching fretted and fretless basses. I was amazed that the necks were as tight a fit in each others bodies as they were in their own. It says a lot about the quality control at Yamaha The finished article
Ooh very nice. Love the orangey and chocolatey colours. Oh my god, it's a Chocolate Orange! And I just love Chocolate Oranges

Yeah try the active input and see if this calms things down. You're not using any pedals with boost are you? I used to use an RBX170 with an EB combo, and never had this. Does it sound ok? Not distorted? What are your tone settings etc? These will also affect the VU meter. Cheers Geoff
Actually, I'm tempted to spring for a micro head, I've tried the MiBass but wasn't too impressed. Hopefully this'll sound a bit more lively as I sort of like the way it looks...
Ditto with the MiBass 550 I had for a while. And yeah, me beginning to likey. I hope the production units aren't so fuzzy and more in focus (audibly and visually lol)...

Actually, I rather like this new lit-up logo malarky. I see the Mibass 2.0 (is that a pop at TC's Amp 2.0?) has that too.

No VU? Jazz knobs? Wtf.......
