1. As Paul and I share the same surname, I shall go with whatever he says...
2. I came across the reference whilst browsing throught the classifieds on here (I know, I sould be working, but what the hell it's Friday and I need to mentally prepare myself for a jam night at a local pub tonight I'm enjoying myself the most when im giving my fingers some real welly, and making those strings work for their living, and my thumb has a permanent indent from the corner of the pickup - so I don;t think a ramp would be for me. Perhaps in later life, though... Right, back to browsing...
3. Hi All I recently came across something called a 'ramp' which fits under the strings. What's the main purpose of it? I did some googling and it mentioned about reducing attack etc, but would be interested to hear if anyone here uses them, and why. Cheers Geoff
4.
So basically BGM were wrong..
Absolutely unheard of. Not true. Never ever ever. Right, if they see that do you think they will give me my next subscription for free?
5.
I have the V4MVW, which is the vintage white colour with glossy maple neck/fingerboard and it also weighs 8lb.
I have to admit to being very tempted by this one too. I've not seen the vintage white colour in the flesh though, but I can imagine it looks delicious with that glossy neck/board. I don't need this...
6. I have two Vintage V4s: one is an older standard black with Rosewood, and the other is the Tony Butler version, like yours. I gig with them often. They both play very well indeed, no complaints there. The rosewood board one is particularly nice as I've had time to really get the action perfect for me. The pickups on that one also seem stronger - but it could be their height setting. The Tony Butler is getting close, its just a matter of time for me:) And having the time, of course lol. I've weighed both of mine and they came in at a fraction over 8lbs. That will be including a strap though. So yes, 8lbs sounds about right to me for a bare bass. As for balance - neither have neck dive, and balance prtty much spot on for me. What strap are you using? A smooth nylon one won't have any friction against your clothes to halt and dive you are experiencing. Cheers Geoff
7. A few years back I had a 15" Ashdown EB180 combo, and supplemented it with the 12" version of the same Ashdown combo (except the amp was missing, so it was acting as a 12" extension), and they worked really well together. To be honest, if I hadn't found this site I'd probably still be happily gigging with them. Later on in life I added a BF Midget to my Compact, and really did not get on with the pairing at all. The Midget gave me too much mid harshness (might not be the right word to use) that doesn't work for me. Changed it to a 2nd Compact and all was well with the world. Note that I have now gone back to a single Compact, as that seems to be all I will be needing in the near future...
8. The brilliant ABM preamp stage coupled with a decent valve ouptut stage. What's not to like? Now, if only I had 999 pound notes available....
9. Also some of the high-end, small volume, makers use 12's which are only available as 8 ohm units, so restricting them to wiring them as 4 or 16 ohm.
10. Hi Lovely looking instrument. What is the neck like on these? Ie profile, nut width etc. I don't know a lot about the maker - are these all hand made? Cheers Geoff
11. These are great practice amps, and very loud for 30 watts. Ive been using one for a couple of years, type bump.
12. If I had the money I'd buy myself a birth-year Jazz to play and enjoy. Unfortunately a '65 is somewhat out of my price range, so my 2010 one will do me just fine
13.
Arggggh ffs! 3015 it is !!!!!!!!!!!
Good man, you won't regret it.. I have one in my cab. And there's some great collective knowledge on here to help you out. Geoff
14. Jay No worries young man. Am still keen to take part but totally understand your work priorities atm. Cheers Geoff
15.
A sealed 8x10 filled with helium ;-)
That would have a very interesting 'voicing'
16. Yes, what has happened with this venture? Geoff
17.
I feel happier playing upright - I fret less. CB
I see what you did there...
18.
I would only do 1/4 a day
A man I know once did an 1/8th in a day. That was a very long time ago though....
19.
It's the new Evo 111 Geoff :-)
In which case I'm really looking forward to hearing your thoughts and opinions about it, when you've had a chance to get used to it and give it some exercise. Cheers Geoff
20. Im sure you will enjoy it. Would love to know how you get on with it, and exactly which model it is (EVO 1, 2 or 3). Cheers Geoff
21.
Not sure what the change is Geoff but its got the sub-octave and compression on it as far as I know :-)
As I understand it, from the very beginning of time they had the Sub Octave, then the Evo 2 introduced the compressor. The very recently introduced Evo 3 adds a variable valve drive emulator (although not a real valve as in the ABM series), the control is situated directly alongside the Sub Octave control. I could be wrong, I could be right. Geoff
22.
Looking forward to my MAG 300 Evo iii head and 410T cab this week:-)
Thats one of the new MAG heads with the grind emulator, right? If so, I'd really like to know what you think of it. Cheers Geoff
