1. A very long time ago I had a funny burning smell in a cab. Turned out to be the driver: he'd dropped a ciggie in the footwell. So sorry...
  2. Hi, sorry to hear this. I had one of these and it worked fine for a couple of days. Then it wouldnt turn on. Sometimes it eventually powered up, usually not. I sent it back to Thomann for a refund - their returns process is pretty good. Good luck! Geoff
  3.
Ditto the advice above.

There are Laney and Ashdown comobs in the classifieds section at the moment. Alternatively if you can find another £25 or so the new TC BG250 combo is supposed to be pretty good, although you won't be able to add an extension cab to it like you can with the first two I mentioned.

Cheers

Geoff
4.
Cheaper and less bother to change the cap. Replace with one of half the value (or put another of the same value in series). How did you manage to aquire BB2024 pickups?
Would 2 caps in series do that? Did you mean in parallel (although that would double the capacitance).
  5.
Well I've just bought my ABM 500 head back a year after selling. Says something I'd think...
Good man! Cheers Geoff

I had one of the HB 5110 10" combos. Compact, light and a good sound. Very loud for its size really. However, after about a day or so it refused to switch on. Sometimes it would power up about a minute or so after being switched on, sometimes not at all. So it went back. Thomann have a very efficient returns process. Cheers Geoff
  7. All PMs replied to. Looks like its sold, pending the usual.
  8. These are seriously good little practice amps type bump. I've been using one for a couple of years. They have some serious poke too - I've used it for a couple of jam sessions with a drummer. Good luck with the sale. Geoff
  9. I got this delightful amp in a trade with our very own Karlfer a few months back. I've used it for a few gigs but to be honest it's not getting the use it deserves, as I'm much more attached to my ABM. It's light, loud and, well, lovely. It's had lower gain preamp valves installed to give it more clean headroom before the grit sets in. This in no way affects it's volume though! The original valves are included in the purchase. Comes with it's padded gig bag and shoulder strap. I'll throw in a new kettle lead too, In mint condition, just as it came from Karlfer. I'm looking for £SOLD inc postage to the UK. I'm not looking for trades. Cheers Geoff
  10. Hi I had a single compact for a couple of years which I loved - tone and weight. I then added a Midget to it, but really didn't get on with it at all. I found the addition of the little one added too much mid-range bite which I couldn't easily EQ out. So i changed it for another Compact, and I was back to that sound I love - just even louder and all encompassing with 2 drivers. However, I found I was using the two together very rarely - the places I play don't warrant it. So I'm back to just one Compact and will probably stay that way. Did you try the Compact and Midget singly, and not just together? It might be worth trying that if you are not getting what you want from the combination of the two. I really found the Midget changed the character of the sound when used atop the Compact. And not forgetting, a little bit of settling/breaking-in of the drivers will happen - that also has an effect on the tone. Good luck Geoff
  11. I'd start at as flat eq as possible as mentioned a couple of posts up (note that everything at 12 o'clock is not flat), and go from there. It probably is a valve, but anything is worth a try... Cheers Geoff
  12.
middle on full bass and treble on 1 is flat with that tone stack
Yeah that's pretty much my take on it too, approximately....
  13. Bump. If anyone is tempted, these are brilliant. I've been using one for home practice for a couple of years, and they are remarkably loud. I've even used it for some sessions inc drummers.
  14.
Have taken it to be looked at. Hopefully something simple to fix.
Fingers crossed
  15. Well the ABM500 has a mixable valve and SS pre, and the same output stage as the Spyder. Usable compressor (even though everyone will disagree with me there, but it works ok for me). The Orange Terror Bass is another alternative: basic tone section, but its natural tone is just remarkably good in the first place. I have both, and prefer the ABM over the Terror Bass. The main advantage of the TB is size and weight.
  16. Nice bass indeed. Is that your spare/back/music room? Looks not a lot different to mine lol. Cheers Geoff
  17. Well I'm relieved it's working fine now. However, that is a rather odd hting for it to do in the first place. Cheers Geoff
  18. OTB and Compact. My experience of the MiBass was rather disappointing.
  19.
(maybe a very loud budgie with a good PA could pose a problem )
Is that why they have tweeters in them? I'm so sorry.... I'm off to B&Q now as punishment...
  20. And as we all know the truth that TC amps only put out about three and a half watts, you will need as much speaker area as possible to be heard over a tweeting budgie. Actually, I'm probably just jealous.
  21.
This may be a stupid question but I know very little about ohms or amp power. My old Ashdown combo quoted a power output of 300w at 4 ohms but the internal speaker was valued at 8 ohms as most speakers seem to be. I realise you can get the full 300w by conecting a second cab and that brings it down to 4 ohms and you get full power. Correct?
Correct They only fit an 8ohm internally to force you to buy another cab from them to get the full power. Sorry, I meant you can then upgrade with another cab to get more volume - moving more air.
  22.
Ashdown damn you phone !
And I thought it was just me who feels that way. Some of the predicted words on my phone have been close to hilarious....
