Well I used the dual Compact stack last night in anger. Typical pub-band venue (eg a pub lol) which is quite spacious with sofas, chairs, tables etc. Plenty of soft furnishings, and a not-too-high ceiling. I've been using the Compact/Midget stack for a few months now - with a number of different heads, last night was with an Ashdown ABM500 EVO3. I've enjoyed using the Compact/Midget stack but felt that perhaps the Midget was shifting things tonally too much for me - so thought I'd try the dual Compact route. I must admit I really could have done last night's venue with just one Compact (which I have done before) without problem, but what the hell.... lol Right well first off, the volume level of the stack was astonishing. I could have shaken the optics off the bar wall if I wanted. The ABM seems to have endless amounts of low end stuff - too much for this venue. I backed this off quite a bit and boosted low/hi mids to balance the sound to how I like it. Tonally it was what I have been looking for. I've always loved what the Compact does - more so than the Midget. Plenty of low end, but with such clear and defined mids that let you hear every tonal change and nuance of playing (not that I have such fine nuances in my playing lol). I was able to head out into the bar area using my wireless, and I was very pleased with what I was hearing out there. Admittedly the Midget would cut through and project more mid wise, but for me it was verging on too much - and now having twice the sound of one Compact is a lovely thing to hear. Everyone is different I guess. Well that was my little gig-gear report.... Cheers Geoff
Nice one Geoff, a dual-Compact rig must be great.
I certainly hope so. Have been using a Compact + Midget stack for about 6 months which has been great, but wanted to try the dual Compact route: depending on which setup I prefer will determine whether I release a Compact or a Midget for someone else's enjoyment Cheers Geoff
Be VERY careful with that rig ... http://www.youtube.c...ihwHt0#t=00m41s
Lol I shall wear protective gear and a hi-vi just in case Cheers Geoff

Well today I popped into Brighton to pick up my new Barefaced Compact after work today. Alex showed me around his new workshop/empire, where different cabs were in various stages of production - from bare ply carcasses to finished products. I had the pleasure of hearing a Big Twin T in action, through the Avalon U5 and QSC power amp. A cracking effortless sound indeed. He also showed me some new things in the pipeline - there's some very interesting stuff coming up I find it encouraging that Barefaced seem to be moving forward and increasing their product range. Alex is a focussed and interesting chap and has some great ideas coming up. Anyway, looking forward to gigging the dual Compact stack at the weekend... Cheers Geoff

Ashdown MAG or ABM head at less than 4 ohms
RandomBass replied to RandomBass's topic in Amps and Cabs
We say 4 ohm minimum for a reason.... ;-)
And there endeth the lesson Well, talk about getting advice from the horse's mouth! Any experimental thoughts of combining 8 and 4 ohm cabs with my Ashdown Heads have been dispelled. And Mr Ashdown Engineering, I've been using my MAG600 head for a few years and never had a single problem from it - and it never fails to impress. My newly acquired ABM appears to be just as good so far. After a brief foray into the world of Ampeg, I'm sticking with what works for me. And I definitely don't want to turn either into a smoke machine lol. Cheers Geoff -
Hi all Has anyone taken the plunge and used their MAG or ABM head at less than the recommended min of 4 ohms? I currently have two 8 ohm cabs but am pondering using an 8 and a 4 together. Just curious really... Cheers Geoff

Ooh I like that one for sure... very interesting What's the Roland setup next to it? Is it the D Bass 115 with the 115x powered extension? Any good? Cheers Geoff

Afternoon all... I know they have only fairly recently been announced, but has anyone come across one of the new Vintage V4's with the Maple fingerboard? I have a Rosewood V4 and these new ones sound (hopefully!) interesting... Cheers Geoff

My Ampeg PF500 has found a new loving owner in Chimike. A great, and interesting, guy to deal with. Cheers Geoff
have a bump on me, i use a micro VR sometimes and it sounds great
Thanks nomis, and yes its a great sounding amp - I've used it for a couple of fairly 'busy' gigs and it coped easily. I'm sure it's more powerful than the figures suggest! Cheers Geoff

Right then, Ampeg clear out time I think. In my quest to find the sound I am looking for I have collected a few bits and bobs along the way, but now is the time to liberate some cash for round two lol.... Micro VR Head (TAKEN OFF SALE FOR THE TIME BEING, SORRY) bought earlier this year from GAK in Brighton. A cracking amp really, and certainly louder than it's rated 200W would suggest. It sounds lovely through my Barefaced Compact and Midget. I've used it for practice and a few gigs. In perfect condition with box, manual and kettle lead. I'm after £160 plus postage. PF500 head (NOW SOLD), only a couple of months old. Another cracker from Ampeg - and through my Compact and Midget, a delight to hear. Again - only used for some practice and a few gigs - including 2 outdoor ones without PA support where it was very strong indeed. In perfect condition and comes boxed, with manual and kettle lead. I'm away for a week, but will have intermittent access to any messages on here. Basically I won't be in a position to arrange anything until Saturday 3rd September at the earliest I'm afraid. In the meantime I will answer all PM's (assuming I get some lol) as soon as I can. Postage will be agreed with the buyer before sending. Hoping to get some pics up tonight but cannot guarantee it (suitcase packing comes first so I have been informed!), but both heads are in perfect condition and look just like the pics on the Ampeg website. Also still have my Amber Ibby SR700 for sale if anyone is interested Cheers Geoff
