It may be possible to get it reconed. I remember Wembley Loudspeakers http://www.wembleyloudspeaker.com/ being mentioned for this before (I've not used them myself).

The Fender serial number lookup doesn't recognise that one with the S prefix. Without the S prefix, it says "BULLET REVERB 120V 3/PK" made in 2000.

The bassline on that is another one that's not that simple, especially the timing round the start of the chorus.

Drive to gigs (I'm the PA supplier as well). Drive to rehearsals which are 20 miles away. With a band which used to have its own rehearsal room, I left a bass at the rehearsal room and travelled by motorbike (car if it was really wet), which was enjoyable as it was a nice ride.

I actually have one of these sitting behind me as I type: The Variax bass isn't MIDI. The Sonuus B2M isn't that great. I'm just about to fit a Roland GK-3B onto a 6-string bass but I won't be using it for MIDI, just for processing through a GR-55. The Industrial Radio MIDI basses are probably the best bet - there have been other split fret switching instruments too.

Other than setting up two different patches and switching between them? You could use snapshots - set up a patch with parallel effects chains and take one snapshot with the effects on the first effects chain on and the second off, then vice versa for the second snapshot. Actually, the effects chains could be in series if using snapshots.

No, get a bit of brass sheet and make a surround up for the bridge pickup, assuming it's just a flat rectangular plate with holes in it.

How much disconnecting did you do to get the body stripped? Just pickups, or jack socket and battery clip too?

Is it early (banjo tuners) or later (conventional tuners)? I bought some years ago, can't remember where it was from but I suspect it was Large Sound who no longer sell them. Also self-taught, with a smattering of musical theory from violin lessons, and another one who moved from guitar to bass. I've picked up more theory since then and I don't think I developed any bad habits.

Just as a minor point, I think you're understating the output of a bass. I've found it's in the order of 100-200mV. I suspect the interface between preamp and power amp is generally line level (not sure if that's 1V or slightly more) so the first stage gain would have to be more like 5 or 10 times.
