https://reverb.com/uk/item/2332901-zemaitis-keith-richards-macabre-1981-mahogany Not actually one that belonged to Keith Richards, but identical to it. Interestingly, it's both vintage (pre-1980) and made in 1981. There's those mind-altering substances for you. And there's 12% off - bargain. If it wasn't so fugly.

A programme signed by both the singer and the lead guitarist. I'm not sure about its value though, the singer in question was Gary Glitter.

Spouses, do they like or hate your instruments?
tauzero replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
The first Mrs Zero was quite supportive of my playing in bands - she came to some, but not all gigs. The second Mrs Zero, after a brief semi-enthusiastic period, was indifferent to it (well, she was pretty indifferent to me, as long as I kept a roof over our heads and she only had to work enough hours in the week to pay for her booze and fags). The third (and current) Mrs Zero is enthusiastic about it, and has finished up being the singer in one band, and in our acoustic duo. I don't think I could cope with a relationship with someone who was either actively or passively opposed to my playing in bands. In the same way, I couldn't cope with someone who didn't like me riding bikes (all three Mrs Zeros have been enthusiastic bikers, so that's never been a problem). -
Ha ha! You might wanna ask Jon about that, he's never been so busy I reckon! Have you seen the amount of orders he's produced recently single-handedly? - and every instrument is absolutely stunning! I'd say that Shuker was also THE big rage right back at the dawn of time, which we know was called 'Bassworld v.1' Still going strong!
But doesn't get mentioned on here anything like as often as he once did. I assumed it was about Basschat flavour of the month rather than popularity in the whole wide world.

Shuker. John Shuker was all the rage when I joined Basschat, but then seemed to lose momentum.
Don't forget a spare drummer too, for when the regular one hurts his back carrying his kit in. It happened a couple of years ago.
A former band needed to borrow a guitarist from the other band we were playing with as ours had finally gone round the twist that afternoon and jumped in the canal.

U2 and the Irish Uprising of the Eightees
tauzero replied to SpondonBassed's topic in General Discussion
Cranberries? From Limerick and formed in 1989 so match the criteria. -
We played at an event on Saturday where we were providing PA for us and another band. My speakers, guitarist's mixer, so I thought I'd take my little mixer along as well just in case he wanted to get off early and take his mixer. Set up, sound checked, and 15 minutes before we were due to go on, his mixer started making regular thumps, one or two a second. The fault wasn't external, so we took his mixer out and put mine in instead (copying all EQ settings from one to the other). Everything went OK, so crisis avoided. Not sure whether to start bringing my mixer along to all gigs now...
Oooo that's a gap in the market someone could exploit!
Gallien-Krueger already make left-handed amps. Gets confusing when you're a right-hander setting up the tone controls. -
How many times have you broken a string?
tauzero replied to PaulWarning's topic in General Discussion
Once, so long ago that the details are hazy - I think it was a friend's bass that I was using for some reason, and the A broke where it passes over the bridge. I have also had either two or three Ashbory strings break while sitting unused, but that's not terribly unusual. -

Mrs Zero loves my basses. I do tend to run purchases past her as we're not exactly as rich as Creosote. I think she'd like me to reduce the number below whatever it is now (around 13), and seeing as I've managed to reduce the number of motorcycles I have from a similar number, I think she'd expecting that to happen some time fairly soon. -
Peavey Grind. I do seem to be saying that rather a lot.

... the day I got caught! (Stingray preamp battery)
tauzero replied to mcnach's topic in General Discussion
I buy my AAs from a seller on Ebay and change them every gig in my wireless. Duracell Industrial ones. I used to be forever looking at the LEDs on the receiver and then working out when I could change them but that wore thin very quickly. Works out at about 50p a gig to put them in and forget about them.
That sounds very expensive. I use Eneloops (in a Line 6 G50) - a brace of them last several gigs without charging, and I keep a second pair waiting in the wings. -
I guess pro=most/all of your income from music, the hobbyist = most/all of your income on music? Hell, i'm okay with that...
Possibly the tipover point between semi-pro and hobbyist is when musical income fails to match musical expenditure. Mr Micawber knew this. "Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen pounds nineteen and six, result semi-pro. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pounds nought and six, result hobbyist."
inevitably it will... P bass GAS is a permanent condition...
Definitely not. I got rid of my P-bass GAS 30 years ago.

Another idea for the detuning - they tune their guitars to the drop tuning, then capo them when needed. In one former band, we did about half a dozen songs a semitone down. Guitarist had two guitars - we'd do the first set with standard tuning, guitarist has both guitars tuned to standard in case of a string break. In the interval, he'd detune one guitar, we'd play the detuned songs, then he'd swap guitar back to the one still in standard tuning for the remaining songs.

... the day I got caught! (Stingray preamp battery)
Am guessing most active basses are unable to run without their battery, as I found out years ago with a Precision Lyte that died just as we were finishing the first dance at a big wedding.
Some basses have active pickups, which means the pickups themselves have buffer amplifiers in them that need power - some Warwicks, for example. Some basses could produce a sound with no battery if there were a way of bypassing the preamp. Some basses have active/passive switches, which, as long as they don't have active pickups, means they can make a sound without a battery. This is what I've opted for if replacing a preamp. If I remember, I'll experiment this evening with my 2000 Thumb, which has an active/passive switch but I think also has active pickups. -
Paying Duty/vat on goods from Europe, Thomann's
tauzero replied to funkgod's topic in General Discussion
We'll have to pay UK VAT but conversely not VAT in the country of origin, so Thomann prices will drop by about 20% but you'll have to pay 20% plus duty when importing. Unless we continue with some form of VAT harmonisation of course. -
Former wannabee (a long time ago), now hobbyist, hopefully with the right attitude.

The only song I do lead vocals on is "Come up and see me", and I find I'm too busy thinking of what the words are to have the luxury of cocking up the bass line.
-
Not exactly, it received some bids but didn't get to reserve. Not surprising when you see the BIN price. For some reason, people seem even less enthusiastic about bidding for it now it's been relisted. If you really want a stealth bass like this, get a Variax (you may have to paint it black and put sticky-back plastic on the pickguard though).
Shall we settle this once and for all with a Bass-Off? I nominate two bands each comprising three bassists thus:

In the red corner - SMV (Stanley Clark, Marcus Miller and Victor Wooten)
and in the blue corner - MAJ (Mark King, Adam Clayton and Jaco Pastorius)

I think the second team are slightly disadvantaged. Could I suggest Mark King, Adam Clayton, and Chris Wolstenholme for that team, and Jaco Pastorius, Bernie Edwards, and John Entwistle for the dead team?
I've met him 4 times and he was really friendly and totally unpretentious each time.
And I'm quite prepared to believe you too. My credulousness is going through the roof. Can anyone else who's met Adam Clayton come in with the casting vote please?
Mr Tauzero, thanks for the namecheck! Don't forget to put your hand up and tell teacher they've forgotten to give us homework as well.
That's OK. Saved me hunting down the link that someone asked for.
Aah, Mr Clayton. My nemesis. As I've posted before, I don't think it's quite hate because that's something I would apply to root vegetables, moreover I simply don't like the guy and like his playing even less. You know, for the record, I met him just the once and he was thoroughly unpleasant, smug and arrogant. He just had this air of incredulity about him, akin to that of someone who had reached the giddy echelons of a given field without having a credible bone in their body to support where they'd got to. On the shoulders of giants. Which I suppose is where I came in. We do live in a world where we have a degree of freewill and comes with that the ability to like and dislike things, people, places. We also seem to live in a world where it seems it's OK to heap praise on things but it's bad to castigate, unless it's Nigel Farage I suppose.
Actually I may have been wrong - you may have said he had no musical ability. Can't remember now. Anyroadup, I happen to like U2 (for which I'm sure I will be hated) and he does the job for the music. I have no knowledge of him other than that, so you have the advantage of me there, and I'm quite prepared to believe you. Are you sure you mean "incredulity", as that seems to me to imply he couldn't quite believe he'd managed to get where he has, which runs counter to your other comments.
