4 Question You Would Ask A New Prospective Band
tauzero replied to blue's topic in General Discussion
There are countless occupations which entail one or other (sometimes both..?) partners being absent for long periods. It can be dealt with, given the willingness to do so on the part of all concerned. Family is, I would agree, important; perhaps primordial, but that doesn't preclude absences. High seas fishermen..? Soldiers on active service..? Road haulage drivers..? Touring musicians..? Mountaineers..? Round-the-world yachtsmen..? The list is long...
My brother works on a dive ship - he does one month on, one month off. Seems to work for him and his wife and their two children. -

From those pictures it looks to me as if there's been some cracking and slippage of the truss rod anchor point, where that brass piece sits in the two cutouts. Hopefully Martin will also have done something about that.
For comparison at the price they are going for 3000 euros would buy you a Streamer Stage 1and thumb from the late 80's early 90's.. and probably a Streamer $$ from a more recent period...
I bought a new Thumb in the late 80s for £900. I was earning a lot less money than I do now, and my old house was worth £30k, not the £120k or so it would fetch now. It's called inflation. The price of a Thumb now is probably on a par with the price then, allowing for inflation. However, touches like the sculpted headstock rear that took a little weight off it have gone.

Glam. Consider the bass lines of Trevor Bolder, Jim Lea, Dennis Dunaway and the like.

Keeping the missus happy...DIY bass storage solution
My late hubby put up with me commandeering a whole room for my music and a whole room for my art! .... but then I had put up with 30 years of bike bits all around the house and cylinder heads in the oven on many occasions I never complained, that was just part of who he was
I've got the basses all round the house and the bike bits all round the house too (though I haven't had to replace a valve guide for years so no heads in the oven and valve guides in the freezer). Mrs Zero is a very tolerant woman, fortunately. -
Seems nearly impossible to come up with an original song name
tauzero replied to Behlmene's topic in General Discussion
I'm probably in fairly clear territory with

Overdrawn at the memory bank
1805
Save the Slug
Ghoti (but it's pronounced "Fish")
However, to paraphrase a famous quote that never happened, Love Lies Bleeding is not only not the only Love Lies Bleeding in the world, it isn't even the only Love Lies Bleeding in Tamworth. -
One of those has already been done ...
I'm pretty sure that was just the album title. Sadly, "You're on your own" isn't on that album. A fine band, and Flabby was a fine figure of a singer until his untimely death. There's not many singers who use their bellies as percussion instruments for a solo. -
Log in trouble ? Help ! -MODS YOU CAN DELETE DUE TO IDIOT ERROR :)
tauzero replied to Wonky2's topic in General Discussion
Hang on - there's something important that we seem to have missed. It'll come to me. Ah yes. Cookies. See what you miss if you're not concentrating? Personally, I like the white chocolate ones. Right, back to logs. Or was it angles, and if so, what about Saxons, eh? Or Iron Maidens, come to that? -
4 Question You Would Ask A New Prospective Band
tauzero replied to blue's topic in General Discussion
Have you got many gigs lined up? (Covers) Does everyone get a bit of a say in the songs? (Originals) Does everybody get a bit of a hand in the songwriting process, or even bring other songs in? Who on earth did your website? That bassist you're sacking, is he a Beatles obsessive who likes asking essay questions? -
4 Question You Would Ask A New Prospective Band
tauzero replied to blue's topic in General Discussion
When I replied earlier I forgot my golden rule - is there a couple in the band? Never a good idea in my experience.
You haven't experienced my current band (me and Mrs Zero) or former club band (drummer and keyboard player) then. -
I was looking into the McMillen myself and you can trigger drum sounds from it - after all, all you have to do is put the notes out on MIDI channel 10. The manual is downloadable from McMillen's website and if you check the list of presets, there's one that does drums.

Bassist effects to fill out a 3 piece punk band
tauzero replied to PunkPonyPrincess's topic in Effects
You could get a Zoom B3, MS-60B, or BiON to experiment with - you can get octave up/down, other pitch shifts, chorus, overdrive, etc out of one box. Decide effects what you like the sound of and then whether you're happy with the sounds that the Zoom unit or whether you'd rather explore the world of separates in the endless quest to find the exact sound you want. -
Started on guitar, joined up with three others in the hall of residence I was in to form a band, which gave us two guitarists and a third member who could switch between guitar and keyboards (and sing, talented git). So I started playing basslines on the bottom strings of the guitar and then went out and bought a bass. I did have a couple more abortive attempts to be a guitarist with a band, but finished up as a bassist full time, with the only guitaring I do being to accompany Mrs Zero in an acoustic duo, because she lets me. She might just be being kind.
On a guitar the right note is just a bend away from the wrong one. On a bass it's already too late
Why do you think I play fretless?

"Boys Night Out" Is This The New Niche For Bands?
tauzero replied to blue's topic in General Discussion
The dancefloor ...just thinking about having to dance makes me feel uneasy... nothing ends a night out for me quicker than the mention of a dancefloor... it inevitably leads to everyone I am with dancing, and therefore me being expected to dance, even though everyone I know knows I have never and will never dance. Why do people always assume that after a lifetime of refusing to dance this time will be different?
I think you need one of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/291172451739 -
Mark King Fans. They're a sensitive bunch.
Was it the 2012 tour? I was staggered and I mean STAGGERED by the quality of the vocals.
For me, the thing that somewhat lets Level 42 down is Mark King's vocals. He sings perfectly well, it's just that his voice is rather bland. -
"Prototype Brit biker"? Don't think so somehow.

Do they do an electric one?

Opening chords that send shivers down your spine

One that struck me greatly at the time (and the bassline is tremendous). And this is the first track off her first album, so I've got it right this time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOqVQPq8zm8 -
Personally, I managed to play bass for 30 years before I heard of him and still have only knowingly listened to one track by him (I will make an effort to have a listen to Hejira), so I find 'universally acclaimed' a serious case of hyperbole. And if he was so influential, why is it that you can hear tasteful fills and melodic bass lines by people like Bruce and Bolder before Jaco, but after Jaco it seems that root 8th notes became the order of the day? :-)

Another Spinal Tap here - current drummer told us yesterday he's leaving for his former band. He left them because he thought he wasn't playing well enough, we recruited him and his self confidence has improved greatly. He prefers the material the other band's doing (rather more soul than us). The drummer before him, incidentally, hadn't gigged regularly for about 20 years (did very occasional reunion gigs, less than one a year) and he very quickly got back into it.
I much prefer gigging on New Years Eve than going out as a punter myself. Inevitably, the most comfortable place in a manic bar or club is on the stage. That, plus the fees are usually 1.5x or 2x the standard! Looking forward to it.
Either you're getting underpaid for NYE or we're getting underpaid the rest of the year. I prefer playing to punting too. Copper Pot at Leamington Spa for us this year, following a successful Halloween there.
