I use an Ultimate GS-1000. Folds down quite small, gets sufficiently tall to just about cope with a Warwick Buzzard. No good at all for my headless Sei though.

I think I've only knowingly heard one BF cab and I thought it sounded horrible, but that was because the bassist had it EQed to sound completely unlike my taste. I will one day try to A-B compare one with a cab I know. A friend of mine owns a BF cab, incidentally, a gen 2 2x12 IIRC. He's very happy with it.

I do have one active bass which is quite a bit louder than the others but all but that one produce a similar output to the passive basses I've owned. I always use the passive input or switch off the pad, never use the active input or pad.

Quite a chunky neck on them both of course, the passive one sounded quite thin in comparison to the active one. So necks may be a variable but I haven't found it myself. My extremely slim-necked Warwick has a good deep growl that's identical to the baseball-bat-necked Warwicks, so I would say that's two empirical results which show you haven't looked at the right slim-necked basses.

It sounds like it's slightly overloaded. What's the bass? Does it have a particularly hot output?

I started on guitar and still play it a bit, both plectrum and finger picking. On bass I use one or two fingers, occasionally a pick, and occasionally thumb and two fingers - for some reason I don't do thumb and three fingers like I do on guitar. There's no one right way, just be prepared to experiment with technique for each song.

You could reduce the probability of a dropped bass by passing a strap from strap button to strap button round the back of the stand and tightening it up.

Have you got a "pad" or active/passive switch on it? If so, switch the pad off and/or the active/passive to passive.

Peavey are another worth looking at - Grind or Cirrus BXP.

I agree with those who think this thread should still be stickied. It has far more claim to be a reference thread than the pedalboard one, which is more of a vanity thread. It's not as if the effects forum, unlike others, is drowning in stickies.

I imagine it's what's used in 2-band EQs for active basses, and you'll find it in a lot of hi-fi amps. Simple circuit, low component count, just needs a 3x gain (IIRC) to bring the output level up to the input level.
