1.
It should be noted that bars in Europe are probably closer to the States rather than the UK - bar bands generally play three or four hour shows over three sets.
That's close to my experience in Munich, when we played four nominally half-hour sets with nominally half-hour breaks (more like 4x40 and 20 minutes rest as it turned out).
2.
Just what I've found with basses I've played. I've seldom found a thin necked bass with a good deep growl. Most produce a thin metallic tone, that most folk seem to call "punchy".
I've had two Hohner B2 5-strings, identical other than the pickups and one being active. Quite a chunky neck on them both of course, the passive one sounded quite thin in comparison to the active one. So necks may be a variable but I haven't found it myself. My extremely slim-necked Warwick has a good deep growl that's identical to the baseball-bat-necked Warwicks, so I would say that's two empirical results which show you haven't looked at the right slim-necked basses.
3.
But then again there is Liza Minelli and Kirsty McColl. Also, I would venture Ben Castle (son of Roy) is a apparently a pretty good jazz musician.
And Zac Starkey too.
4.
Would you like to stroke my orange eared elephant?
That's not an orange eared elephant, it's a hippopotamus with a hat on.
5. Not so bothered about width but I far prefer shallow necks.

MS60b buzz

It sounds like it's slightly overloaded. What's the bass? Does it have a particularly hot output?
7. I started on guitar and still play it a bit, both plectrum and finger picking. On bass I use one or two fingers, occasionally a pick, and occasionally thumb and two fingers - for some reason I don't do thumb and three fingers like I do on guitar. There's no one right way, just be prepared to experiment with technique for each song.
8. You could reduce the probability of a dropped bass by passing a strap from strap button to strap button round the back of the stand and tightening it up.
9. Have you got a "pad" or active/passive switch on it? If so, switch the pad off and/or the active/passive to passive.
10. Peavey are another worth looking at - Grind or Cirrus BXP.

DIY Effects

I agree with those who think this thread should still be stickied. It has far more claim to be a reference thread than the pedalboard one, which is more of a vanity thread. It's not as if the effects forum, unlike others, is drowning in stickies.
12.
Clicked on the set list, I'd go and see that. Really.
They do like Sunny Afternoon, don't they?
13. I imagine it's what's used in 2-band EQs for active basses, and you'll find it in a lot of hi-fi amps. Simple circuit, low component count, just needs a 3x gain (IIRC) to bring the output level up to the input level.
14. Whatever happened to Kenny Loggins?
15. Don't play under UV lights after using brake cleaner, that'll generate phosgene.
16. Sack him and trawl round the Cornwall open mics for a replacement.
17. It's not unusual [1] for a provider of services to be paid later - if you happen to be in a job you've probably encountered the concept as companies tend not to pay employees daily in cash. If the money's coming from the brewery, the landlord is probably going to prefer to have them deal with you. I have had a split payment on one occasion, 50% or so in advance and the rest a week or two after the gig. With agencies, they're not likely to want to pay you before they've got the money, which doesn't seem unreasonable. [1] A brief attack of Tom Jones there
18.
The Who were relevant 50 years ago. Not today.
It's good to know that you're the arbiter of relevance. I don't know where I'd be without you.
19. I've had gigs payed through both Events UK and Invapay. The venues or agencies have covered the fees. It would be nice to be paid on the night in cash but I'm not that bothered.
20.
Maybe if you're a covers band but definitely not originals. I thrive off that it's us and them attitude.
When I saw The 'Oo at the NIA a couple of years ago, Roger Daltrey did the band introduction bit. Perhaps you should put them right.
21. We do "Born to be wild" near the end of the set and Mrs Zero just briefly introduces us over the outro solo, no extra soloing for us. The vocalist of the club band I was in used to introduce us. One evening he said "I'd like to introduce you to my band". We all exchanged glances and looked daggers at him.
22. Schecter also make (or made) an 8-string which I thought was a good player when I had a go on one.
23. Couldn't you tune the B up a semitone, then put an A string on in the E string place and tune it to G, a D instead of an A and so on, all tuned down a tone, so you're tuned the same as the bottom strings of the guitar?
24. Roger Daltrey, Meatloaf, Alice Cooper Tasmin Archer, Alison Moyet, Mrs Zero And lots of others.
25. Variax, that's the way forward.
