What I mean by dynamic range is the sensitivity of the pickup to respond from the very lightest touch through to really digging in (ie. the range of its output from lowest to highest in terms of volume and harmonic content). This is generally greater with a passive pickup as active circuitry compresses the signal at various stages along the signal path (compression = less dynamic range).
I'm sure there are active circuits which do, but I don't think I've encountered any. Generally they consist of (occasionally) a buffer (this is the bit that an active pickup replaces) which should be unity gain, then a Baxandall-type tone control circuit which requires a gain of 3 times to provide an overall unity gain. There's vast amounts of headroom as a 9V system is +4.5V/-4.5V around the ground rail while a bass pickup will be putting out 150mVish peak to peak. No compression in sight.

Did you try the obvious place? The packet of three Behringers are the XM1800S - don't know how they compare to the XM5800 but we have them and have used them as the main vocal mics with no problem. £32 for the three.
I read yesterday that Windows 10 will be a free update for everyone including those with pirate copies!
For those of us with Raspberry Pi model 2s, it's free anyway. When they get it out, that is.

When you realise you can no longer play a Precision neck...
Anyone else want to comment before I do..? No..?
At least we know where some of the finishes on relic basses come from now. -
IPads might be more expensive to buy but you get free uploads of the operating software whenever they are available.
You mean like Nexus tablets, and most Android tablets from "name" manufacturers?
It seems most do not feel loosening of the strings is needed. I don't and never had a problem.
When tightening a trussrod, I do put a bit of pressure on the headstock so I'm stressing the thread on the trussrod a bit less than if I just tightened it. I have no idea whether I need to or not, it just seems like a good idea.

Get a Warwick JD Thumb. You'll never look back. -
Yep, the only thing that bothered me was the (apparent) desire for people to see him being bottled.
It may have been prediction rather than desire.

Our guitarist uses an iPad. I've used a cheap and cheerful Chinese tablet in the past (wrote a web page which contained the set list and allowed me to expand and collapse my notes for songs I wasn't sure of, then put it onto the tablet and viewed it in a browser). There's something called Setlist Helper which I started using but haven't done anything with recently, and also if you go to http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/ you'll find they have an app (Android, iOS, and I think mini-Windows) for tabs. I've just got a Nexus 10 so I want to have another explore of what might be available.

They're not hi tech futuristic basses, they're active basses with rather more sophisticated preamps than the average off-the-shelf active bass. But I do agree that it's a good idea having sound clips on websites. tks Engineering has the same on their website http://www.tks.se/, allowing direct comparison between their various cabs.

What's the general standard of player who reads Basschat?
tauzero replied to lou24d53's topic in General Discussion
I'm another weekend warrior - I really should do more but I'm too lazy. I'd place myself as being in the top 25% of Dog and Duck players, so Victor Wooten can rest easy. Mind you, seeing Steve Lawson at the Moffat Bass Bash has got me to get the 7-string back out and start trying to work the B3's looper. -
Should every bass player play at least a little bit of guitar
tauzero replied to CHW's topic in General Discussion
I started on guitar and still play it, though I'm primarily a bassist. I think it's been useful to me having a knowledge of both instruments. I would say that if you happen to have another instrument, whatever it is, in the house, then it's worth messing around with it, but actually going out and spending money on another instrument (whether it be guitar, keyboard, or drums) is not necessarily going to be worthwhile. -
Ah, a bass goitre.

How to get round headstock copyright issues
tauzero replied to chaypup's topic in General Discussion
I must say, I think that one piece of wording by John Hall is - well, dodgy. "As far as your instrument is concerned, we've made it very clear to you privately that we would have been happy to take care of your instrument, as we are doing with other people if: 1. If it was new and legally imported into the U.K. (It isn't)" Apparently the instrument was imported unofficially. Hall says it either isn't new (but it was) or it was illegally imported into the UK (but it wasn't, it was unofficially imported). The wording implies an illegal act on the part of the current owner or of the seller, which I would suggest is probably defamatory. Not that I give a toss, it's only a Rickenbacker. -
You could check if the preamp section is OK by running a lead from the FX Send to another amp (preferably the FX Return on another amp as it'll be less sensitive, but normal input will be OK if you start with everything on the second amp turned right down). If that produces an output, it's either the power amp module itself or possibly the power supply, if there are separate power supply sections for the preamp and power amp. There's a block diagram on page 13 of the manual http://www.laney.co.uk/uploads/990e3637fce6000ea29ca779b982005f.pdf which may help seeing what's going on.

The venues which are actually venues (ie. have PA and a stage) seem to be moving towards having just tribute bands on, which for covers bands such as us is frustrating. I'm not anti-tribute, just wish that these venues would alternate tributes and covers.

Brilliant weekend and thanks again to Alan for organising it. Steve Lawson was excellent - I now have to get my 7-string back out and work out how to use the looper on the B3...

And England have just beaten Scotland. We may not get out of here alive.

Interesting requirements to join a band...
tauzero replied to solo4652's topic in General Discussion
For some bands image is important. Some musicians think it's ok to look like a sack of sh*t with a string tied around the middle. Clearly the two are not compatible.
And for some musicians only the money is important, which is clearly incompatible with psychedelic rock. Man. Not sure about the hair requirement, from what I remember of the era 50% of the bassists wore woolly hats. Like this bloke: -
I've tried that on a sports bike - bass on your back forces your helmet forwards and you end up staring down at the ground the whole time. Not the safest mode of transport to a gig
I did it once, GK 200MB combo strapped to the pillion seat, headless cricket bat bass, bag of leads, and sleeping bag all bungeed and cargonetted to the rack on my Tiger. Tamworth to Maidstone and back...
