1.
My thoughts on The Hofner Violin Bass: "That style bass only looks cool on one guy, Paul McCartney."
I don't care whether it looks cool or not, it's a horrible thing to play.
 2.
EDIT: This http://www.ebay.co.u...=item25a2157dea should give an idea of the market price of an unbranded double bass. If it were closer, not in Southampton, I would have put a silly low bid on it.
I'd be a little concerned by the lump of wood sat under the bridge.
 3.
I say; "If it wasn't for The Beatles none of us would be be playing electric bass guitars" A lot of us had never seen an electric bass guitar until they came along. And it was passed down to each pop music generation.
Just as well the Beatles weren't that popular, otherwise we'd all be playing those dreadful Hofner violin basses.
 4.
Not going to attempt to revive an old argument, but there is not, never has been, and never will be a Rickenbacker copy that is indistinguishable from the real thing.
Presumably because they're all either worse or much, much better.
 5. As the body length is 660mm, that door is only about 2'6" (750mm) at the most. Does that mean that it's owned by a midget?
 6.
I am not, by nature, very techy although I am also not imtimidated by technology but I see a real flaw in this 'tool' in terms of application. From what I can see, if you cannot play, say, a harp, this thing lets you play the sounds of a harp and so on through all sorts of intruments. Fine, I get that. It may be a midi usb interface thingy, i don't really care. What interests me is HOW DO YOU LEARN HOW TO PLAY IT?!!
By experiment. It's a MID controller that can be played in a variety of ways. Describing it as a completely new instrument would be a slight exaggeration, but it seems to be the first based on the fret switch guitar controller idea which has actually been designed with the express purpose of playing in assorted ways.
 7.
Looks like a Fisher Price Chapman stick. I could never play a stick in a million years but this thing looks tempting.
Not as many strings as a Chapman Stick. You need this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/161630963957
 8.
The inability to escape drunken, middle aged twats,
My band can't get away from them either, because I'm on the stage with them.
 9. It would appear so, through a real MIDI port: http://createdigitalmusic.com/2010/10/rock-band-3-fender-mustang-pro-midi/
 10.
Is MIDI over USB simply a question of making up a suitable lead, or does it require an interface to get actual MIDI protocol data? Every time you have to convert data you introduce latency which is the last thing you want in a performance instrument.
An Arduino would do the job. Switch on is a couple of seconds, latency would be negligible. If you want to avoid having flying USB leads (I agree they're a bad idea), power with a 9V battery, and attach whatever box you're using to the Instrument 1 with a short USB lead to the socket. Or maybe modify the Instrument 1 to use a Neutrik mini-XLR 4-pole socket and plug to replace the standard USB socket.
 11.
The hardware is a little like a slimmed down Synthaxe, though I guess most of the clever stuff happens in the software (I haven't watched the video yet). I'm surprised they didn't include a 5-pin Midi socket though - that would make it seem more like a useful gigging tool.
MIDI over USB, so it should be easy enough to interface it to 5-pin MIDI.
 12.
Aha - it's got two tugbars on the top. Must be a special custom jobbie and hence the price.
I think there's just one, it's just got several extra screws holding the pickguard on.
 13. That's unusual, a headless 8-string...
 14.
Octave eights are unusual
Once you get past 6 strings, it seems the tendency is to have odd numbers of strings (I think there's quite a few people that would think that any number of strings above six is odd). I'd think of an 8 or 12-string as being double-course (8) or triple-course (12), and of course a 10-string is a double-coursed 5 (like mine).
 15. And it's back! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/OFFERS-THROW-NUMBERS-AT-THIS-TENNESSEE-15-STRING-EXTENDED-RANGE-BASS-/291402250210?ssPageName=ADME:SS:SS:GB:3160
 16. Mrs Zero and I play in an acoustic duo for which I use a Variax on one of the acoustic settings.
 17.
I really like the ME-50b, I've had one for years and years, the sounds are largely excellent and is laid out in a more analogue way as opposed to screens and menus etc. That said, it becomes a bit of a faff when you want to use two effects that appear on the same 'pedal'. Obviously each pedal has a number of effects that you select between, but you cannot assign an effect to a different pedal. As such, it's not possible to easily switch between an Octave & an Envelope filter sound without saving a custom setup, but even that can become confusing.
That's where the B3 comes into its own, you're not restricted to the preamp, dirt section, modulator section, delay section, cab sim, but you can have three modulation effects or three delay effects if you want them.
 18.
I wouldn't worry about it. I always look somewhat depressive, even when on stage. Not long ago had someone should "Cheer the f*ck up mate!" mid song.
Mrs Zero gestured at me to smile when I was depping with the old band recently. You can see how well that worked:
 19.
Where oh where is Fumps?
I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you.
 20.
've been through the obvious like - tuning, timing, turn up on time with all your kit in good shape, and very well rehearsed and clear on what you are looking to get from the sessions, don't get pissed the night before etc.
Seems like you've got it pretty much covered. Add in an adequate supply of snacks/sandwiches and soft drinks, not experimenting with a new part, letting whoever's mixing do the job, and if somebody's putting down an individual track, avoid putting pressure on them (eg. we retreat to the kitchen).
 21.
It's an interesting curiosity nonetheless. The German-carved body looks closely related to the Jedson EB-type basses which come up quite regularly, these also frequently have that shield-shaped neckplate.
Aren't said shield-shaped neckplates generally put on by someone who could pass a breathalyser test?
 22. All one needs is assistance to take it to its permanent installation point. Never play a gig in an upstairs venue using one of these. DAMHIKIJKOK.
 23.
Has anyone got anything else to eat? I'm still hungry and it's nearly time for Bargain Hunt.
Well, if anyone else still had a doughnut, you wouldn't have eaten the last one, would you?
