2.
To those who say any bass will do You seem to be the guys with top drawer basses and amplification why waste your money if a squier p bass will cover any gig ?
Because I want a nice bass.
3. Shame, it had a sort of driftwood look to it as it was.
4.
Poor bass players... 'Anything will do.' Can you imagine guitarists having the same discussion?
Yes, and they'd be just as obsessive about it, when anybody could tell them that a Variax would fulfil considerably more than all their needs. If you can't make any bass work for you, you're not much cop as a bass player.
5.
My big concern with the lightweight cabs is that it appears to be very easy to end up with a rig that is top-heavy. My current big rack weighs 28Kg and I expect the small rack to be around half of that by the time it's fully loaded with all the gear, and therefore I'm a bit concerned that when it's stacked on top of two small cabs whose combined weight is about the same as the rack it's going to be unstable.
What you need to consider is how far the stack would need to rock to put the CoG of the whole lot outside the footprint of the bottom cab, as that's when it would topple. A couple of 1x12s around the size of the Berg CN112 or AE112 form a stack similar to a lightweight 4x10 in size and weight. Are you using a 4U rack at the moment? What's the weight distribution like in it - even, bottom-heavy, top-heavy? As for actual recommendations - I'm very happy with my combination of Tecamp Puma 900 and two Berg AE112s. If there's another Nottingham Bass Bash, I'll bring them up .
6. I've used a Thumb for everything from heavy rock to a trad folk ceilidh band (no drums, very trad). I'd find it strange if a bass couldn't be used across a wide range of musical genres. Mind you, it would need to be fretless to cover as many eventualities as possible.
7. I like it. Guaranteed to turn heads at the Dog and Duck.
8.
hey, if you think it's right to return something that is sold as "not playable" because it wasn't playable... I have nothing to add. You may not be contravening any rules, but you're exploiting a loophole and you know it. You're happy with it? Fine. I wouldn't do that but you live however you want to live
But if you wanted to buy something for a purpose which wasn't its primary purpose, if you did so in a bricks and mortar shop, you'd be able to check how suitable it would be for that alternative purpose, whereas online you can't. So if I wanted to buy a comb to play comb and tissue paper (combing my hair is a ship that sailed a long time ago), I could check it out in a shop, but if I could only get it online then I'd need to be able to return it if it didn't suit my alternative purpose.
9. The singer always arrives at the same time as me. She also helps with loading and unloading (although she's currently excused heavy lifting as she has very bad tennis elbow). I am married to her though. In the currently-dormant covers band, the singer would do heavy lifting (and the drummer would help too, as well as bringing his kit in) - it was the guitarist who was an idle git.
10. As purveyors of the low note, it could be that we bear some responsibility for ghosts... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infrasound#Suggested_relationship_to_ghost_sightings Imagine how low this could go: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/291511146469 and as an added bonus, it's like something out of a horror story.
11. I regularly mention to Mrs Zero that she should keep her tambourine well away from the audience when not in use.
12.
I'm thinking about geting a Kahuna to take care of the bass parts but i know it's not loud enough with the rubber strings. So here's my question. Has anybody tried stringing one with regular nickel bass strings? I'm thinking about recycling one of my used sets (that still have a bit of life in them). Will it sound a bit louder, like an accoustic bass?
Assuming that it didn't fold in half immediately (the most likely outcome), I can't think of a reason that it should sound any louder. You haven't changed the dimensions of the bit that's vibrating to make the sound, after all. In fact, it might be quieter - I think that the lower tension of rubber strings means that the amplitude of the vibration would be greater, although their lower mass means that the overall energy of the vibrations would be similarish.
13.
Does anyone use the volume controls when gigging? And if so, why?
Yes. So I can turn it up or down a bit if I want to without going to the amp. I normally set the amp to somewhere a little louder than I'm likely to need, then back off the volume on the bass to the level I want. I'm happy to do that these days, with low noise bass electronics and amps - in the badder old days, I'd want the entire signal chain down to the master volume to be at full whack to keep the signal to noise ratio as good as possible.
14. I've used white spirit successfully to clean up fretboards (and bodies, for that matter), and nothing bad appears to have happened to them.
15. Rob at Pro Audio Services in Coalville (Leics) has repaired a couple of Mackie SRM450s for me - handles guitar and bass amps too. http://www.proaudioservice.co.uk/
16. Sei Original fretless 5-string.
17.
Also this guy is selling some 7-string-neck-on-a-6-string-guitar projects http://www.ebay.co.u...n-/191640936012.
Yes, he's legendary on BC.
18. Artec might make what you want: http://www.artecsound.com/acou/fte.htm http://www.artecsound.com/acou/ate.htm Versions for both round upper bout fitting and flat lower bout fitting. The DFC and APC also fit flat but might be too small to cover the hole.
19. From experience and also looking at this thread on TB I would say that that was a huge current drain, 10-100 times what you'd expect. I don't know how easy diagnosing the cause would be though, you might be better off just putting in a new preamp.
20.
The initial search is okay if you look for a specific item so okay if you know exactly what you're looking for but definitely not great for browsing. To be fair though, I do find browsing on musical equipment sites to be a very dangerous pastime anyway!
Trying to tell it to sort on price instead of popularity is, it seems, doomed to failure.
21.
Oasis Don't Look Back in Anger and Imagine by John Lennon. Every time.
Although the chord run that's a lift from "All the Young Dudes" is also confusing.
22. I went wireless for a while years ago, stopped using it, then a couple of years ago got a Line 6 G50. I don't bother with it at rehearsals, which always remind me why I like using it as I get the lead tangled round my legs or stuck under the chair yet again. Also useful for soundchecking and the odd bit of posing. It does mean slightly more setting up time but I use a DC extension lead cable-tied to my jack-jack lead so I can plug the power supply in where I plug the amp in (same for the Zoom effects unit) so I don't have to go hunting a convenient mains socket to run the receiver from.
23.
We play AYGGMW, and it seems to go down quite well. I don't mind playing that, it bloody Highway to bloody Hell that bores the living $hit out of me. Eff all in the verses, so I have to stand there like a pork pie at a vegan wedding, then plodding quarter notes in the chorus. Hate it with a passion. Complete and utter rubbish.
It's not obligatory to stand doing nothing in the verse to HtH. I use it to reprise my younger rock disco days - dip twice with the left shoulder, arch back and swing right-left then dip right shoulder twice etc.
