While admittedly we were playing mainly English rather than Irish music, when I was with the ceilidh band I used a fretless Warwick Thumb. Lovely woody instrument.

Favourite bass - Warwick JD Thumb. Has the most playable neck I've ever, er, played. As soon as I played it I knew I had to have it, pxed my Fender P (which was, in comparison, like a Woollies Special beside the Thumb, although it was the second-best P I've ever played) and my Hohner B2 and took out a loan for the rest. I'd paid £150 or so for the P (second-hand and tatty), I paid £900 for the Thumb. So I'm not parting with it, even though I play 5-string these days.

Did you get to PMT or Guitar Guitar? PMT are (or were, last time I went in) well worth checking out. IIRC they do all the boring stuff if you really want a Squier, also Sandberg (outside the price range), Ibanez, Yamaha, and Peavey (another maker well worth a look at).

Have you connected the output signal and the battery -ve/board -ve to the right lugs on the jack socket?

I got mine from That Ebay too for about 99p after I discovered that the Series 1 Status uses primitive measurements.

[/quote] I've had a couple of Ashdown Superflys (Super and Superduper), and the EQ section is very impressive but utterly wasted on me. I then had a couple of EA iAmps (500 and 800) and didn't use the EQ on that to anything like its potential (fortunately the base tone was pretty much as I wanted it). Now I've got a Puma and I can cope with the EQ on that. However, I can see someone who has different tonal requirements to me finding a more detailed EQ very useful. Shame Ashdown discontinued the Superfly, although the power amp section was somewhat compromised, that preamp was nice.

GK MB150 or 200MB. Slightly larger than 12" high and wide, less than 12" deep.

Just to say - when I did this on my old one a couple of years ago, I re-sealed the panels by using neoprene tape on the body edges (the panels are originally sealed by using some sort of goop). Did you re-seal it? And have you got the front panel nicely secure? I think I used neoprene tape on the edge of that too to ensure it was damped and unrattly.

Gone now. Was it the one that's Jovian?

I'd also say that how much time and expense you put into finding a plectrum should depend on how much you use it. I only use them occasionally, so I haven't gone on a big quest for one as the ones I use for guitar work perfectly well for me on bass. If you're using a pick for most or all of the time, it makes sense to try a broad spectrum of them out.

I still look at other basses. I've tried enough Fenders to know that I don't want another one of them ever again, but there's others I have yet to try (not that I could afford to buy, say, a Ritter).

[/quote] It's an interesting idea but just how playable would a neck which consists of a square steel tube with a slot up it and attached wooden fingerboard be? Might have been better to have a complete neck with a slot cut up the back that would straddle the steel tube (a bit like the fillet strips that Kramer put into their T-section aluminium necks).

The back of the neck looks as if it might be a little painful. And an adjustable scale length wouldn't work terribly well with the dot markers, although it's an intriguing idea. Maybe there's scope for a kit which would fit on a cricket bat type bass...

Although the auction title doesn't mention it, it's a branded Hiscox case which copes with yer bog-standard classic Status, be it headed or headless (S1, S2, presumably all the closely-related ones like S2000s, S5000s etc). It has a Suzi Quattro connection too.
