I've got a Puma 900. For smaller gigs I use it with a TC RS112, which is a 200W cab. I just don't turn it up a long way. For the bigger gigs I've got a Tech Soundsystems 4x10 which will handle 1200W.
The strings on the six string are upside down 'cause there's no room between the two necks to fit a hand without having it stuck there permanently. That's bloody fantastic that is - presumably the creative genius behind the thing only realised this small problem once the hacking about had begun.
Or you could be charitable and assume that the genius in question was attempting to make a tapping instrument. I can't think why Messrs. Chapman, Warr, and, er, Mobius haven't yet come up with an entirely fretless tapping instrument - the half-fretless Chapman Stick just shows a lack of commitment.

Just the thing for playing "Sultanas of Swing" on then. -
I Bet This Used to be a Nice Bass
tauzero replied to waynepunkdude's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I think it would have looked better with the extra P pickup in place than with that nasty pickguard. -
....and the second thread on the same thing.
Which just shows how successful it is. I can only hope that BC's favourite master guitar improver extraordinaire doesn't get the same idea. Oh damn, now I need the mind bleach.

TBH you're spoilt for choice these days - I'm presuming you've got certain restrictions on your budget so new GK Neo, Genz Benz Focus, or secondhand Tech Soundsystems, Tecamp, TC Electronic RS, as well as everything else mentioned so far.

It's the fourth time that Strat has been up, and each time she's been wearing less clothes... Oh, and it's been cheaper too.

Not entirely taken by the body shape and the edges. Whoever specced it did forget the piezo bridge saddles, which would, of course, have given scope for the MIDI someone mentioned via a Hexpander, and, even worse, it's got a head! Oh, and there are 11 less neck bolts than on a Ritter.

You mean it's not birsdeye maple?

It's an opinion. It seems quite permissible to express entirely positive opinions, but as soon as one expresses a mixed opinion, one gets criticised for it. What f***ing hypocrites.
You may be labouring under the mistaken belief (I think a lot of musicians do) that it's all about the music. It isn't. A significant factor is the delivery. You may also, perhaps, want to consider that people have different tastes and feelings from each other, and that your dire bland bilge may actually resonate significantly with others.
Of course I understand that people have different tastes and feelings. You may have noticed that I don't say which songs I consider dire bland bilge, and that's because some songs that I like and don't consider to be dire bland bilge, others have criticised as being exactly that. Would you say that in your opinion 0% of Prince songs are dire bland bilge? If not, then you feel exactly the same way about his material as I do, though a Venn diagram of your dire balnd bilge and mine might not overlap.
-
One hears this mantra over and over again concerning Prince... almost like the star-struck fans have learned it off by heart or something.
Some of it is very good. Some of it is dire bland bilge. I also don't understand the uncritical adulation.

Help with reducing damp in workshop/studio
tauzero replied to Beedster's topic in General Discussion
Combination of Dr.Dave and TimR. Some warmth to stabilise the temperature plaus a dehumidifier to get shot of excess moisture. What you have at the moment is oscillation between warmth (at least to a degree) causing evaporation and higher humidity, which then condenses out when the temperature drops. -
Combos, cabs and speaker sizes - oh my!
tauzero replied to Evil Undead's topic in General Discussion
As you guys all know, I've been mooching around in search for a small, light and decent sounding combo that could cope with pub gigs on it's own, no PA support, for about a million years now, or what seems like it. And I figured there must be others in the same position.
How loud is the band that you're competing against? I used a GK 200MB (predecessor to the MB150) happily with a club band for years, but it wouldn't have kept up with a full-on rock band. And how desperately do you want a combo? Not excluding separates would give you hugely more options, eg. Genz Benz Focus or GK Neo cabs which are cheap and light combined with one of the many micro heads around these days. -
Seriously though, all the fuss made about £50 notes is basically to discredit cash. The government are desperate to get rid of cash entirely so they can 100% keep tabs on what everyone's buying and where.
Aha, so it's the government who's producing the fake £50s then? Damn clever, they get to spend loadsamoney without it costing them anything, and then they use it as an excuse to get rid of cash.

Gear4Music damaged acoustic bass
tauzero replied to Annoying Twit's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
How does one company end up with twenty five damaged acoustic basses in such a short period of time?
Gets them delivered by ParcelFarce. They started out with 75 undamaged ones. -
How do you set your volume playing live?
tauzero replied to John Cellario's topic in General Discussion
I put the volume up most of the way, leave a bit of headroom, so I can adjust either up or down on the bass as necessary. I used to put the volume all the way up but that meant that if the general volume was increasing, I had to go to the amp and turn it up. -
What's the point of having an effects loop if its not as good as putting the effects in line from bass to amp then?
Some effects, mainly rack-mount units, are designed to be used at line level. Stompbox effects and multifx won't necessarily distort if used at line level but it is something to be aware of.
I'll pay good money for a HM-2
They're far too light to use as anchors. Not too bad for chocking car wheels though.
-
You may encounter a problem using an effects pedal or multifx in a send/return loop, as the signal is somewhat higher than the output from a bass so it can overload the effect.
It may be that a fretless was played on the Jumping Jack Flash single but it was not Mr Wyman playing it.
Issa Stones track from the late 60s played on a defretted bass as per spec. The actual perpetrator wasn't a requirement in the original terms of reference. That'll cost you extra, squier.
-
I remember reading years ago that Bill Wyman was using a de-fretted bass in the mid 60's - but I've never heard a Stones track from that time when you'd notice, it could be double bass, could be a hollow body?
Have a good listen to Jumpin' Jack Flash.

I wish someone would nick our guitarist's HM2. Bloody awful pedals.
Interesting programme. Obviously they only get a few minutes to dramatise a whole lot of research but one point that struck me during the cycling trial as shown was that there was no real control, or not one that was explained. The programme made a point of including the cyclists saying they would not normally race twice in one day so presumably there was no reference for what their second performance would have been without any pills - placebo or not.
Yes, I was going to raise that same point. TBH, due to the small sample size and lack of control, this seemed more like an anecdotal demonstration than true research - interesting but not of itself of any great weight. That's not to say that the placebo effect hasn't been firmly established now, by rigorous trials using much larger sample sizes, and it's also not meant as a criticism, as showing a lot of numbers from trail results wouldn't put the point across as well as the cycling did. The physiological changes engendered by placebo were interesting, establishing a mechanism by which the effect is manifested and demonstrating that it's not just psychological. There's a fair bit on the placebo effect in Ben Goldacre's book Bad Science, which everybody should read anyway. He also raises the point about the disclosed placebo, which is where the whole thing starts to get very puzzling.
-
I'll be watching. Does it make sense to talk about the opposite of a placebo? The belief that something is doing you harm?
That's the nocebo effect.
