1.
It was 'Claire' saying to her Uncle Ray that she wanted to marry him, not the other way round on Gilbert O'Sullivan's recording. Nothing untoward there.
Nono, Claire said to Wilf that she wanted to marry him. Oh hurray. Gary Glitter's song lyrics don't have anything really dodgy - except for "Leader of the Gang" which has the line "I'm the man who put the bang in the gang". Can't see the problem with playing his stuff, there's some significantly dodgier characters issuing records after all. I rather think that "Sweeties" by the Handsome Beasts would raise a few eyebrows.
 2. Under £200. For some reason they don't command a very high price, though they're excellent basses.
 3. For me, what put me off was the neck profile - it's a bit chubbier than I like. The fanned-fretnessosity wasn't an issue at all.
 4.
I am, however, with you on "scon". All the way. And whilst I'm at it, it's Baff not Barth when referring to Bath. And if someone asks if I'm from Newcarsel, I say no, I'm from Newcassle.
Quite. Any fule kno that Newcarsel is just by St Oke, somewhere north of St Afford.
 5.
I don't agree with the now very common view that there is no inherent worthiness in music or indeed in other art (or entertainment) forms and, following from this, that there are no standards. I am well aware that this is an unfashionable point of view but, put simply, I don't accept that 'it's all subjective'. The claim that 'it's all subjective' seems to me itself to be a subjective claim and so there's no good reason for me to pay any attention to it. However, if the 'it's all subjective' claim is intended as an objective claim then it is inconsistent and incoherent and there is still no good reason to pay any attention to it.
But if a piece of music can be addressed objectively, surely it's failed as music? After all, music is about the subjective, not the objective. That applies to the composition, the performance, and the listening.
 6. As soon as that Ritter Roya drops to three figures it will be mine...
 7. Iffy description, but OTOH it's difficult to argue that he's concealing what it is when he has a fine photo of the rear of the headstock with the serial number and "Made in China" clearly written on it. Illiterate chancer rather than deeply dishonest scammer.
 8.
Basses with a silly shape bought (I may be wholly wrong here...) by bassists who want people to say "look at him, he must be interesting because his bass isn't like all the others."
That'll be me, that will. Fundamentally shallow. Mind you, they've also got to be nice to play.
 9.
probably belongs to the other pronounciation thread but in the olden days before the internet I rang up directory enquiries to get the number for the bass centre. I asked for bass ( as in lace ) which is the only pronouncation and the operator insisted on calling it bass ( as in grass ) , she even told me that my pronounciation was wrong
She pronounced it to rhyme with arse? That's weird. This one rhymes with ass:
 10. I quite like both bands - however, when I went to see "Song remains the same", Page's endless self-indulgent (and, let's face it, not exactly brilliant) soloes nearly sent me to sleep. I just feel that they (especially Zep) are rather overrated. The 'Oo were always a better band than Zep... D&RFC
 11.
I work in IT and people love to bang on about things being "virtual". It's equally ridiculous. It's not virtual - I can see it; it's there on that screen
Virtual has a very specific meaning within IT, and has had for four decades. Authenticity is a bit different. In fact, going by what the OP has said is the actual question, I would say that my barn dance band often has an unauthentic audience. Blissfully unaware of us being a traditional English band [1], they will turn up dressed as cowboys (and occasionally, in full-on unauthenticity mode, Indians [2]). This is generally enough to turn our mild-mannered dulcimer player apoplectic. [1] Other British and European musical traditions are also available. May contain nuts. Contents may settle in Transit. [2] Also known as Native Americans. Other Indians may be available. Do not bend, fold, spindle or mutilate this post.
 12.
He says he had it painted pink so that it would stand out
Oh no, a refin - it's worthless...
 13.
I think it is a case of manufactured over organic. If the impetus comes from the creativity of individuals who are in the bands, then there is a level of integrity that is missing when the 'band' are the front for a corporate hit making machine. The Beatles = authentic. The Monkees = bogus Genesis = authentic (they met at school). JLS = bogus (they met at X Factor auditions) Take That = authentic (one of them writes all their stuff). Girls Aloud = bogus (its all written for them) and so on
The Monkees later wrested control of their own destiny from the record company. Does that mean they became authentic? I don't think Elvis Presley wrote his own stuff. Does that, in and of itself, make him bogus? Anyway, I have noticed that no-one has actually tried to find out what authentic actually means, rather than simply deciding on your own definition and then spouting off about Led Zeppelin within the self-defined authenticity paradigm. So I checked, and found the relevant definition: 5. Music . a. (of a church mode) having a range extending from the final to the octave above. Compare plagal. b. (of a cadence) consisting of a dominant harmony followed by a tonic. which means that Status Quo are as authentic as they come.
 14. There's a few in Birmingham - I'm going to try John Diggins out. There's also Joe at Guitar Spares and Repairs who did a good job of a defret and neck reprofile on a Thumb for me.
 15.
what is Hornbeam?
A tree. The wood is also known as ironwood.
 16.
Totally regret selling an Ibanez Roadstar II bass, well, I think I sold it, it just disappeared, I can't remember selling it, but I don't own it anymore
Have you looked under your uncle's bed? For me, it's a fretless Frontier bass - never seen another one. And also a guitar - an 80s Japanese Squier which I swapped for a Roland U20. I got the worse end of that deal.
 17. There's some I've owned that I wouldn't own again (eg. a Precision). And I did want to own a Jazz once, thirty years ago, but I don't now. If somebody gave me a 60s Hohner violin bass for nowt, I'd have it so I could sell it. I wouldn't want anything painted or lacquered - it's got to be natural wood. I'm not keen on singlecuts - I want to like them but I just can't. The Status Streamline - that's horrible. If you want to make a cricket bat, do a proper job of it.
 18.
I especially love that they've used the Yamaha wheel logo. Adds a little mysticism!
The "wheel" logo is actually a reference to Yamaha's musical roots - it's three crossed tuning forks. Also to be found on their motorcycles.
 19.
Can people let me know some tracks they enjoy covering on 5 string so I can practice using the freaky extra string?? I'm into rock but love playing anything with a good bassline.
Try playing Johnny B Goode at the tenth fret, and Mustang Sally at the 8th. If you want to go sub-E, as well as Summer of 69, there's Another Brick in the Wall and Comfortably Numb.
 20. My first Warwick, my '87 JD Thumb, had the truss rod fail as soon as I tried to adjust it. Not sure how it was repaired, but it was. It's also one of the ones where the truss rod adjusts the wrong way.
 21. Peavey Grind, Cirrus, or Zephyr (C5). The Grinds especially go for ridiculously small sums on That Ebay.
 22. Bigger rig - iAmp 800 and Tech Soundsystems 4x10. I am vaguely toying with the idea of trying out a Genz Benz Shuttle 9 as it's quite a bit smaller and lighter than the iAmp, but the iAmp's sound is pretty much what I want by default. The Tech Soundsystems is fine for sound and weight. Little rig - Gallien Kreuger 200MB, the forerunner to the MB150. Just put a proper replacement speaker in after trying to get away with something cheaper (the original speaker had completely crumbled away round the edge). I think I've had it 20 years now, so it's doing pretty well.
 23.
Using the same one here. For gigs as far apart as Brentford, Croydon and Kingston (upon Thames. Not Jamaica)
That's impressively stretchy.
 24.
So, the bass is with me but it doesn't makes any sound, not working, and i dont know nothing about electronics. Just checked if there is any broken wires or something but every wire seems to be okay. Don't know what to do now, bass looks and feels great, but there is no sound! Help me!
Probably best to ask in repairs and technical. Do you have anything that might be of help in diagnosing and repairing - multimeter for testing, soldering iron for, er, soldering? My first step would be the visual check - you've done that. Also check that nothing is connecting the signal path to earth - for example the braiding on shielded cables, where stray strands can come into contact with solder joints. Then I'd go with checking the pickups out direct - for that I'd unsolder the pickups from the volume controls. Then I'd first check that each pickup had a resistance of a few kilohms, ie. not short circuit and not open circuit. Then (assuming they seemed OK) I'd connect them (individually) straight to an amp input and see if they made a noise. If they did, it would be down to the volume and tone wiring.
 25. If ring and tip were connected the wrong way round, it would only work in passive mode (with the plug pulled slightly out of the socket, so the plug tip contacted the socket ring).
