1. I agree that you shouldn't just assume you'll get an encore and do one regardless. I think I've managed to make that point now with the covers band - with one former band, the guitarist/vocalist would insist on doing an encore regardless of whether there was any call for one, or even any applause (we generally went down pretty well but you certainly wouldn't say that we were always asked for an encore). Plan for one but don't do it automatically.
2. I don't use effects with the blues band or the ceilidh band (actually, I did use effects on one occasion with the ceilidh band, just for fun). I do with the other covers band, although I really need to spend a bit of time experimenting properly with the effects unit (Korg AX3000B) to get a few more sounds out of it. I've got a MIDI pickup on one of the basses but either there's something not quite right with it or the guitar to MIDI unit I'm using (Yamaha G50) isn't very good at bass (I suspect the latter).
3. Currently I'm supplying PA (vocal for the two covers bands which also serves for instrument duties for the ceilidh band). As I want a PA for other purposes (acoustic duetting with Mrs Zero), I don't mind that. Covers bands both use all members to try to get bookings. Ceilidh band has enquiries mainly through the website, which come to me and Mrs Zero, and Mrs Zero (who is also the caller for the band) handles the bookings. Money in all the bands is split evenly. Costs for recording etc are also spread evenly.
4.
i personally do not like the sound of light weight amps.
So do you think that a Superfly sounds better when the aluminium casing is on than when it's off?
5.
If you use the Superfly with a loud bass (so you don't run into the lack of preamp gain problem), and a loud cab or are not in too loud a band (so you don't run into the lack of power problem), and don't push it too hard or remove it from the aluminium outer case (so you don't run into the appalling cooling problem), and like a relatively clean uncoloured tone then it'll work just fine (assuming you don't get one of the many unreliable examples).
I don't have a loud bass, all mine are perfectly capable of driving the preamp to clipping if I just turn the gain control up. My 500 was OK on power (I only used one channel with the Tech Soundsystem 4x10) but I got the Superduperfly so I didn't have to turn up quite so far. The Superduperfly also has a top-mounted fan and doesn't get finger-singeingly warm like the 500. I wouldn't mind changing for another lightweight, but only so I can use all the power instead of 50% of it (I may just do a little judicious rewiring of the 4x10 to help with that).
6.
Basically Ampeg too heavy but sounds good what should I get that's lighter but also sounds good?
Superfly.
7.
40lbs??? Wimps
What's the total weight of your rig today then? And what do you expect it to be in a weeks time?
8. Bilbo, me old mate, you need to purge yourself of this bitterness... Copying inaccurately from many sources, several of them completely irrelevant = jazz
9.
Talking of overpriced, how about this! Probably six times it's true value.... GIBSON-SG-EB-0-COPY-BASS-GUITAR-LED-ZEPPELLIN
You'd think that with the word "Zeppelin" written on the [s]truss[/s] trust rod cover, there would have been a chance of him spelling it correctly on at least one of the two occasions he's had a shot at it. Same as no bassist or guitarist would ever misspell "Squier", after all, it's there on the headstock.
10. Although he hasn't ticked the "Free local pickup" box so he will apparently only post...
11.
eBay claim to be simplifying things. However... for business sellers Which I think means that we, the great unwashed, are unaffected.
12.
I'm more surprised they still have wood .
That's the power of Viagra for you.
13. This isn't a thinly disguised plug for one of my auctions... There are certain similarities between the description for my Jack V and a Jack 4-string, which is very flattering because obviously my command of English is greater than his and I am far wittier and more charming. If he hadn't been so eager to nick my text, he might have noticed that his bass isn't actually a Jack V like the title says because it's a four string and the V means 5. Copying stuff from one place = plagiarism. Copying stuff from many places = research.
14. Anybody who does proceed needs their bumps felt, they're sub-£500 new. Hence my thinking it was a somewhat optimistic price. If they take the "2" off the front, that would be rather more realistic.
15. The tuners look as if they're in the same place as for this inlaid Mazeti. Build quality on mine is fine. And I dropped the seller a message to ask if it was a typo and she said she was selling it for her boyfriend who had told her what to put. I'm sure there's a smutty joke to be had from that involving the definition of an inch but I'll not be the one to make it.
16. Looks like it would be about £60 to ship to Finland.
17. I have a Mazeti 5-string fretless. Jolly nice it is too, I'd be quite tempted at the idea of a 7-string version. But perhaps not at the price of this one.
18. What was the situation with rosewood board neck truss rod adjusters? Were they all heel end adjustment, with no plug at the headstock end (no sign of anything, just a blank scallop), or did that vary through the years?
19.
The 'it looks to clean for something that old' worries that crop up around things like this never really bother me...
Indeed. Statistically speaking, there must be at least one P owner who has catered for the fragile finish and actually looked after the thing.
20. I have an AX3000B,and what I'd like to do is to be able to play a note/chord and have it repeat ad infinitum, so it goes plunk plunk plunk... Then I want to be able to play over the top of it, without the playing over the top getting added to the loop. I'm using the HOLD DLY function, with it assigned to the CONTROL pedal. However, when I play "plunk", then press the CONTROL pedal, then play "plink plink", it comes out as plunk plink plink plunk plink plink regardless of the initial state of the CONTROL pedal and what I do with it. So, any of you AX3000B owning experimenters out there, can I actually do what I want to do? If so, am I using the right effect (I forgot to try experimenting with FREEZE which may be the other candidate) and what do I need to do with the CONTROL pedal?
21.
I've always wanted one of these. Not to mention the string spacing & scale is perfect. Would you ship to Finland?
Yes, should be able to do that. Not sure what the postal cost would be, I'll check that up.
22. All packed up and ready for the post tomorrow...

25.
Not mine unfortunately - I think it's a custom job, I just did a Google image search for "hippie sandwich bass"! Have to say I've always loved this sort of plywood!
Found it. It is indeed a custom, using a Warmoth neck. Pictorial history of it being built is here.
