Brass nut... What are the advantages?
tauzero replied to blunderthumbs's topic in General Discussion
I know that there's an ACG out there somewhere with a piezo pickup at the nut. It would be worth seeing what string sounds that actually picks up, as presumably there will be some slight transmission of vibration along the string, even on a fretted note, as the fretting finger isn't a vice (some of my fretting falls short of being a virtue, mind). I suspect that the actual difference in sound is negligible, if not imperceptible. I do like my Just-A-Nut 1s on the Warwicks, though, and have put one on one of the Tsai 5-strings too. If I was having a nut made and the price difference was insignificant, I'd go for brass, but that's just a personal thing. -
How much??? '51 Precision Jap RI
tauzero replied to Rick's Fine '52's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
The bit I love is the carefully photographed pots & wiring, so that you can see that they're the original '51 Re-Issue pots and the original '51 Re-Issue solder is still in place. I really should check that the pot-codes authenticate back to a genuine '51 Re-Issue.
I just want to dust off the little bits of sawdust on the front of the body where he's undone the screws. Grrr, that's really got my OCD going. -
One BFM Omni 10.5 speaker. The details of the Omni 10 and 10.5 are now gone from Bill Fitzmaurice's website, but they were a 2x10 and 1x10 horn-loaded design with additional piezos. The driver is an 8 ohm Eminence Beta-10A. Originally came with a neo driver, but that was sufficiently physically deep that it butted up against the rear of the cab. There are two piezo tweeters in, unswitched. Sockets are two locking jack sockets. I put a single handle on one end - it's a recessed one so it doesn't rattle and I positioned it so it's well balanced. When I got it, I think it had some sealing issues. I put neoprene tape round the back join to seal that and also on the baffle joint, and I used bolts and inserts to hold the baffle plate to the interior mating surface. There don't seem to be any sealing issues now. Carpet covered with plastic corner protectors. Carpet is in good condition. There's a grille covering the speaker at the back of the horn. Weight is 13kg. Looking for £120 + shipping. I'll put some better pictures up soon.

A Fender Indecision?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/181034909326 Jay Armstrong headless. Personally, I don't think it's very attractive (rather too much like a headless Precision), but you don't see them every day.
Cheers guys. I hadn’t thought about adjusting the track pitch rather than fiddling with the bass signal – duh! Would Cubase Elements be an option? Only reason I ask is that I know a Cubase user who could give me a crash course when I return from my travels.
I can give you a crash course in Best Practice - http://bestpractice.sourceforge.net/ - assuming you use Windows

Choose a track
Click play
Move the pitch and/or speed slider left or right as required
Not too hard...
But, to be back on topic. Start with a good quality cab first. Not the other way 'round. There are plenty of low priced amp heads that will sound great with the right cab.
So, you suggest that the OP sells his new amp and buys a new cab instead?
-
So you buy a relatively expensive and good quality amp head, but you're after cheap speakers? Nice one.
Indeed, it would make far more sense to use it as a doorstop until he's got enough money to buy an expensive cab. I'd have thought the GK 212MBE would be one option, or perhaps a used Markbass Traveller 102P. Depends on size of budget.

In case this is of help to anyone else in the future: I decided to take the plunge. Soaked the nut in penetrating oil and unscrewed it. In order to actually get it out, I had to take the head piece off (not difficult, two screws hold it on and they were quite happy to be undone), then the truss rod nut comes out quite happily and is easily refitted after lubrication. PS. As a bonus, 16-year-old Minus Zero interpreted "penetrating oil" quite differently to the meaning that the manufacturers ascribe to it. Feeding his misapprehension has provided considerable comic entertainment, although I did finally put him right by telling him that it was for stiff screws.

Short scale for less than £200! Perfect for little hands!
tauzero replied to MiltyG565's topic in Bass Guitars
The Ashbory at 18" is pretty short scale. Doesn't float everybody's boat though. -
Jan Akkerman - guitar, lute, etc Phil Collins - drums (as long as he can go back in time to his Gabriel Genesis days) Rick Wakeman - keyboards Mrs Zero - vocals, because she'd never forgive me for not letting her sing in this band. She's quite good too. Me on bass, struggling to keep up

There are multiple options. Changing the pitch of the playback - all the above plus a Winamp plugin called Pacemaker and a standalone player called Best Practice (both freeware), or use one of Tascam's bass trainers (CD-BT2, GB-10, MP-BTsomething). Changing the pitch of the bass - use a whammy effect (dedicated one or part of a multieffects unit with a pedal, eg. the Digitech BP200). Recording the band at a rehearsal and playing along to that. Each method has its pros and cons.

BC's new classifieds section - your opinions please
tauzero replied to ped's topic in General Discussion
Please make sure you look at my last post where I explain why a % fee isn't actually very easy and where I suggest items below a certain cost are free.
As regards the % fee - how easy would a hybrid system be, where the Classifieds form (or a variant thereof) created a thread in the appropriate For Sale forum (and that was the only way to create a new thread there), entering the price and location into the subheading? That would allow a %age to be charged at thread creation time. Presumably ATM the Classifieds form creates an entry in one table, Start New Topic creates an entry in another, so the principle would be fairly simple. -
Anyway, consider this... Early sixties jazz bass, routed for an extra pickup... devalued? You'd think so. What happens if you have non questionable evidence that Leo himself did it?
Well, that makes it a prototype and you put an eye-watering price tag on it. What about if it was done (not by Leo Fender but, let's say, John Diggins) specifically for Jet Harris or Tony Goggle?
-
OK... but how do you find out which is the "right bass" without trying lots out first? Any maybe adapting them to suit your own individual preferred sound, look or playing style?
Well, for a start, if you're going to mod something, don't buy a Fender (good general advice anyway, I think ) I'm in favour of modifying basses to your requirements. If part of the reason for buying the bass is its resale value and modifying it would reduce that unacceptably, it's time to sell it and find one that you are willing to modify or that suits you better in the first place.

Computer chair - collection only from Chislehurst
tauzero replied to thunderbird13's topic in Recycling
Shame im not nearer. Threw out my old computer chair. But this new one is contributing to me getting typists elbow im sure. Strange thing is I never get it on my bass
Don't the pickups dig in a bit when you sit on the bass? -

But, again, a fuse in the mains plug doesn't magically make things much safer - or are you suggesting that all our European and American members are at greater risk than UK members?
Well their mains is 115 volts lower than ours and all the sockets are fused anyway, if the socket is fused you don't need the plug to be fused as well.
USA mains is 120V but European mains is 230V. Just a minor point...
Too many people get a bass then whip out the tool box. Leave them alone. Concentrate on playing them better not frigging around with the wiring.
Or get the right bass in the first place.
-
Hmm, the same logic would suggest that square waves don't exist.
They're the product of an infinite series of odd-order harmonics (which is why clipping produces a sound which has lots of odd-order harmonics in it). But in the real world, there's things like slew rate and damping to consider.

You appear to have posted this in completely the wrong place...

I've just bought a Hohner B2V which is in very good condition but I suspect has never had any truss rod adjustment. The truss rod adjustment is very stiff (it needs tightening). While I've managed to get it about where I need it, I would like to get it moving more smoothly. I was thinking of slackening the strings and just undoing the truss rod nut all the way, then oiling up the thread and putting it back together. However, before I do that, I would like to make sure that this is a reasonable approach, and also that I won't cause myself insurmountable problems if I do so. So, can anyone authoritatively tell me from their own experience whether removing the nut on a headless Hohner is an easily reversible operation that will have no detrimental effect?

Mike just bought an EA iAmp800 from me. He dropped in to pick it up and we had a pleasant time chatting. Good to do business with.
