That is, instead of hammering frets in and stoning them all and crowning them etc, you stick slivers of wood in the slots you've already got cut for the frets and sand them down flat. So you pay them $499 for them to do less work.

London University, International Hall, 1976. I was 18. "Back in the USSR" by the Beatles, which I'd never listened to the bassline on, so the bassline was my own invention. Hayman 40/40 that I'd just put together with parts from the Fender Soundhouse after it had had a fire and Hayman had gone bust, and I think I went into the PA. Our set was roughly half and half covers and originals.

I'll go with Toasted and BottomEndian - context changes things, and even with lickle hands, fretless is easier with one finger (I think I tend to fret the string I'm playing rather than barre it though). However, on the Ashbory, I tend to use a violinny left-hand position quite a bit of the time, and that makes ring and little fingers the obvious choice.

I improvise all the time in the ceilidh band, insofar as I know roughly how the tunes go, and have a few set parts for some of them, but play most of it by ear, including corny fills and nice jazzy runs etc.

Must admit, I forgot completely about this thread and haven't had a look inside the Superduperfly to see what the layout is like. I am tempted to try repackaging it into a full-size 1U box, to try and get some shielding between the switch-mode PSU and the audio circuitry. It does have a bit more high-pitched digital noise than my 500W one did - it's not loud but it's there.

I played at a friend's party recently, and one of the guitarists had the 6-skinny-string equivalent of this, which I had a little play on. He'd got it very well set up - it was possibly the easiest guitar to play I've ever encountered, incredibly low action. Looked really good too, no horrible black paint over that lovely wood...

Ricks - I'm not at all keen on the neck. Singlecuts generally - I've only seen a couple that I like. I would say Fenders, but I don't actually want to love them. I'm just happy to live my life along a parallel course to them.

These may give you a brighter tone and require less thick strings: It doesn't matter about string gauge as far as the bass is concerned, the truss rod will need adjusting to compensate for the string gauge. Also, buy the strings in sets, that way the string tension will be pretty even across the neck and you won't finish up with the neck twisting.

I prefer a nice crisp ending, I think there's general consensus on that in the band but it then tends to get forgotten about once we've got the rest of the song sorted, so we get some idea of what we're doing and then move on to something else. The result is that at gigs, there will be one or two songs where I suddenly realise that we're heading towards the buffers and I don't know exactly when the brakes are going to go on... I don't mind the occasional braaang braaang, thumpity thumpity thumpity ...... BRAAAANG! but it's as well not to have it for every song.

Blues rock covers band - paid rehearsal studio. Other covers band and originals band (which are pretty much the same band) - guitarist's dad's studio at the bottom of his garden, properly soundproofed and we pay a nominal sum so I'll class that as paid rehearsal studio too. Ceilidh band - the pub. Acoustic duo - our lounge, as it's me and Mrs Zero.
