1. Why does no-one ever mention Mark King or Flea? Another vote for Dennis Dunaway from me, plus Trevor Bolder, the Spiders from Mars bassist. I'll also add Jim Lea of Slade.
2.
Can I sit on the Basschat mediocrity bench with you? And there might be some others along in a bit. Could get crowded.
It's my ambition to be mediocre. After all, your targets should always be attainable but never easy.
3. The Roadhouse might be worth talking to. It's quite large, there's actually a stage there if anyone feels rock-starish, and there's also a reasonably large car park and the access doesn't involve stairs.
4.
Though I'd keep it in here as it's relevant, but I can find how to search within a thread but it just gives me the whole thread as a result, how do I view seperate replies with relevant information?
Click on the cogwheel to the right of the search bit - it's the advanced search facility.
5. And they're back...
6. I encountered it this morning when I was doing the custom stylesheet to get rid of avatars and thought I'd broken something on my machine. I was rather glad (in a way) to find out I hadn't...
7. Apart from the enormous great lump out of it. The neck sounds curious (I have no opinion either way on whether it's likely to be good or bad) - definitely one to try before you buy. I do like the looks though.
8.
OK, I've discovered that Firefox 6.0.4 is the problem - now using Chrome & everything's OK.
Firefox 6.0.2 is fine - perhaps you should avoid being an early adopter...
9. I've got an '87 JD. NAS sold one (4-string) on here nearly 2 years ago and gave a potted early Thumb history:
The Thumb History In 1985 Warwick created the Thumb modifying the Streamer shape... it was to have been a headless bass but it turned out so good it was left headed. The shape was influenced by the ideas of a great pro player John Davis. He used to move a lot on stage and he wanted a smaller body and a faster neck than the Streamer had. The Wengé neck was a Warwick trademark at the time and the bass sounds clear, powerful and big. The earliest Thumb basses were made in 1985. These basses are really hard to find, expecially the ones with the early body shape (changed in 1987). In 1986 Warwick produced 40 basses a month. They made them with a Schaller one piece bridge. The old Thumbs had the famous EMG pu's, a slightly more aggressive sound than the warmer and smoother Bartolini's which were installed as an option (as on this bass). In 1992 Warwick developed their own pick ups, the MECC's which are still installed in the Thumb Basses of today. Specs: Bubinga body, Wengé/Bubinga neck, Wengé fingerboard, 34" scale, 26 bell-brass frets, black hardware, Schaller/Warwick tuners, Schaller/Warwick one-piece brass bridge, brass just-a-nut I (with individully adjustable strings grooves), Bartolini J pickups, 2band active preamp. The early Thumbs were built in 1985 and some of them have the JD logo. JD stands for John Davis, a bass player in the Nurenburg Area after whom Hans Peter Wilfer (the founder of Warwick) named the bass. The name was changed in 1986 or 1987 from JD to just Thumb Bass.
So I think all the Thumbs until somewhere in 1987 were JDs, and then they all weren't. This one's got the one-piece bridge/tailpiece and carved back of the headstock that mine has. Wish I had the money...
10.
Extra points to anyone who remembers Rachel Bolan...
I thought Marc only had a son. <googles> Oh, wonder if his parents were Johnny Cash admirers and fancied a variation on "Sue".
11.
who are Metallica?
A popular beat combo, m'lud.
12.
the last big charity bash I did where I let the othe bass player use my rig saw the end of vintage Trace head.
Perhaps you should have bought a more reliable head then. If there's not going to be any great time pressures or problems over changeover, it wouldn't be unreasonable for the other bassist to use his own rig.
13.
If you're stacking your cabs with the amp on top then you're still running through the same length of cable to get to the bottom cab as you would be by running a cable direct from the amp head...
Yebbut the first part of the daisy chain carries the current for both speakers, so will lose a little more power than carrying the current for just one. All pretty negligible unless you're using skinny little cables (or instrument leads), but I see nothing wrong with being pedantic.
14.
The other consideration is that daisy chaining cables means all the power is going down one cable but running two cables (using both amp outputs) splits the power across both of them, effectively giving you "thicker" speaker cables.
The power going to the second speaker in the daisy chain is also going through four connection joints rather than two. It's not going to make an awful lot of difference though. My preferred option would be separate leads, but if lead length dictates daisy chaining, I wouldn't lose sleep over it (not while we've still got Dakota in the set to send me to sleep, anyway).
15.
As far as I can see though, with a few exceptions like Behringer, amp manufacturesfigures seem to bear at least some relation to reality.
The power ratings for Behringer's EP2500 are considerably more accurate than those for the RH450 (ie. they're almost exactly correct). TC were foolish - they could have called the thing the RH450 and given its RMS power rating elsewhere. I think there has been a hysterical overreaction on TB by some members, saying that they will now sell their RH450s and 750s even though they love them because TC used misleading figures.
16. I've not been to the Five Ways (car problems when the last one was on) so I've voted "yes" but it's an uninformed "yes". What time are you expecting to finish?
17. Gigs on Friday and Saturday night in Munich. Two of the best gigs I've ever played. Report on the whole thing (which is still undergoing changes) here.
18. Well, we're in Munich. Finished up as plan Q, which was to drive to Stansted and fly to Munich. Sat in hotel bar paying a bit too much for the beer and typing on my phone so please excuse errors and brevity (for me, anyway). The lady with MS who we're doing this for is with us, our guitarist is looking after her for the next few days. More to follow in tomorrow's exiting, er, exciting episode.
19. The big feedback one has amended his auction to say he used the other photo. He's also provided photos of the bass he's selling. So he's dishonest to the extent that he rips other people's photos off.
20. Never rely on the guitarist to find out fundamental information. Mrs Zero contacted Kilians to see if they would be able to supply PA (the guitarist had said that they had one but it wasn't very good and they preferred bands to bring their own). Turns out that they have a PA, which they'd prefer us to use, and they can also get us backline and a drum kit. So now we're looking at plan Q, which is go there and back by coach. Not the quickest transport solution, but it is cheap and means none of us have to drive.
21. Play a little flurry of notes in chromatic runs and rapidly don my beret, trusting that the audience will recognise jazz when they hear it.
22.
Really? Just how exactly does one fix this easily?
With a nammer.
23. We have hit a snag, in that the company we were going to hire a minibus from for £300 have stopped hiring them for European use due to a high nickage rate. Currently working on alternatives that aren't going to cost significantly more.
24. Our main driver for the German side is a courier so he's used to long driving stints. There will be three other drivers who could do this side of the Channel (and the other, come to that, though at least two of us haven't driven on the right). Gear's sorted, it would have been nice not to have to take the PA but that's life. Must remember to get some plug adaptors, it would be rather embarrassing to turn up and not be able to plug in...
25. A German friend of our (The Lightning's) guitarist Steve has multiple sclerosis, and we're going to Munich to play a couple of gigs to raise money for a wheelchair for her. It's something which also has quite a bit of meaning for Kaz and I - a good friend of hers from school days when we first met has MS, and has been in a residential home with very little mobility for a few years, and my first girlfriend recently got back in touch after 32 years, and it turns out she has just gone into the secondary progressive stage of MS. Some more on our little adventure at http://www.thelightning.co.uk/munich.html And this is where we're playing: Kilian's Irish Pub We're going over by road, hiring a minibus and heading off under the Channel. Passports sorted, just under two weeks till the off...
