Not a peculiar approach at all........... I liked the sound that Laurence Cottle had in a concert he did, so I went out and bought an EBS rig. I would have thought it a logical way to do it, and it saves a lot of time experimenting with stuff.
That's not what you said though. You said that you bought what your favourite players used. I rate (for example) Chris Squire highly but I wouldn't buy a Rick, and nor would I particularly want his sound as I'm not keen on it. It also doesn't make much sense just to buy one bit of the chain. You really need the same instrument, effects, amp, cab, strings, and fingers.
I'm thinking (if i get the time) of tring to construct some sort of bracket that will allow the stripped Superfly be rack mounted. But at the moment i'm just happy to have an amp that i can carry around in a laptop bag!
The rack-mount brackets come with the Superfly. Mind you, it's pretty heavy to suspend by a couple of slightly flimsy plates and when I tried rack-mounting mine, I stuck a bit of wood under it to give it a little support. Where did you get the Superfly 1000? You must have hit a minute sales window... I'd rather like a Superfly with a knackered output to use as a pre-amp. Anyone got one?

I've got a double-neck Atrics 5-string fretted and 4-string fretless that I might be parting with...

Is that the right fret? The right string? Have I selected the right patch on the pedal? Oh bloody hell, have I left the iron on?

Oh, and the photoshopping in the last one for the bassist and guitarist rather reminds me of this: but much more subtly, it should be said. Looks as if you'll have some good photos out of that lot, but I think you'll have to rely on other cues to give an unambiguous clue as to what genre you are.

From the first photo I knew that you're M People, but someone out of Metallica has sneaked in. So you're death thrash soul, a genre I wholly admire.

Most (if not all) active basses are switched on through using a stereo socket as the output, and bridging between the ring and sleeve connections to connect the battery to ground. So what you could do is make up an instrument lead using a mono jack at one end and a stereo one at the other, with screen going to sleeve, and then wire a switch in between ring and sleeve connections on the plug. Alternatively, just unplug it...

I use 9V rechargeables on wireless gear (as does Mrs Zero for her wireless mic), and 9V Duracell/Procell or other long-life PP3 for the basses. I also use a Tanglewood tuner which takes a 9V battery so I have an emergency spare... I've got into the habit of pulling the lead part-out of the amp and unplugging it from the bass every time I take the bass off. It seems to work, all but one of my basses are active and the batteries last ages.
Does anyone know if the Jim Dunlop nylon 1mm come in any colour other than black?
I think they're colour coded, hence black = 1mm and 1mm = black.
From what I understand, when using one 8ohm cab with my 4ohm amp I'm not getting the full whack from my amp, right? Well whats to stop me making up a little board with a simple RCL circuit with the other 8ohms on it and pluging it into the other speaker port?
Nothing at all, if you want to reduce the output of your amp. Consider this - an amp putting out (say) 250W into 4 ohms will put out about 175W into 8 ohms. So you're going from putting all of the 175 watts into your speaker into sharing 250 watts equally between your speaker and your little black box. Can you see what you've done there?

Yet another 1mm JD user - I mostly do fingers so I use the same plectrums as I use to play guitar. There used to be an uncoloured nylon plectrum very similar to the JD but a bit thicker, that came in four flex ratings, 1 to 4. I'd love another few of those but haven't seen them for years.
What would make a £10,000 instrument worth more than a £1000 instrument? considering tonally these two players sound similar and are both highly thought of and sought after - put the names in if you know who they are - just what makes or what are you getting more of in the higher cost bass?
Each of them presumably owns the bass that they want to own and isn't forced to use something they don't want to. Each of them is therefore content and will therefore play to their best capability (unless they're playing the blues, of course, because you have to be as miserable as f*** to play the blues - it's the law).
personally i think no bass can possibly be worth 3 grand, others obviously do since they spend 3 grand on a bass. if they didnt think it was worth it, they wouldnt buy it, as thats what "worth" means.
Back in 1987, I was trying out effects pedals and got handed a Warwick Thumb to use. It was two or three times the price of a new Precision, the sort of price I could never understand anyone paying until I actually played it and I had to have it. You may encounter that in your life, you may not.
And to get back on topic. I have never bought a music magazine in my life. If I want some equipment, I find out what my favourite players are using, and I buy it.
What a peculiar approach to take. If I want some equipment, I try stuff out and buy what I want to buy. Some bassists I like (for example) play Ricks, and I really don't get on with them. I'm not keen on Fenders either. As for BGM, I buy it. It's rather parson's egg, as I think someone else has already said, but there's a fair amount of good stuff in there. I generally view the reviews of top-end gear as I do reviews of supercars costing upwards of 100k on Top Gear.

Bostons, which are Schaller clones. They also do Dunlop clones. The Schaller clones actually have a feature which makes them better than Schallers - they have two nuts on each locking bit, so you tighten the first one down and then lock it with the second. It's probably just psychological, but I don't fancy the look of the Dunlop type because it's the locking mechanism which holds the bass up, rather than the Schaller type where the cradle holds the bass up and the locking mechanism just keeps it in place. Taller, slimmer, deeper, and lighter than the Berg is the Tech Soundsystems ND410S: Just thought I'd throw that one in too, to muddy the waters a bit... What about one of Alex's cabs?
