They are a useful tool yet have a tendency to be used by teenage metal drummers who hammer constantly throughout every song with no dynamic control or fluctuation. Just constant beating.
Our drummer uses one, and he's nearly 60. Must be young at heart.

Owen bought my Ergo 5-string - quick payment, good communication, a pleasure to do business with.

I started on guitar and play in a notionally acoustic duo with Mrs Zero (I use a Variax solidbody on acoustic settings, hence it being notionally acoustic). Primary instrument is bass, I can't do lead guitar. I also write songs, and use an acoustic guitar (big box one, not Variax) for that.
I'll take that one step further. When a seller is selling something on this site at a certain price, but has it advertised elsewhere cheaper (sometimes considerably so). This happens more with non-UK based sellers, as they advertise it locally for a certain price, then decide to go to a UK site and for some reason think it's OK to bump up the price. There's actually an example of this happening right now, and I've seen it a number of times in the past. I'm always tempted to comment on the thread, but then, there's this rule in the For Sale not to do that., and to be honest, I don't feel like getting into an argument with all the do-gooders defending the seller saying "oh, he has the right to sell at whatever price he likes".
But couldn't you simply ask on the thread "Is this the same bass as is advertised here?" and put in a link? You're not commenting on the price, just asking for some factual information, and after all there are scams where information and pictures are gleaned from one advert and used to sell an entirely fictitious instrument.
Its hard enough wearing a watch and a wedding ring is like torture.
Yes, I found that too, although the current Mrs Zero is a considerable improvement.
there's always the uber-cool BassChat T-shirts, of which I am a proud owner
Indeed. I wore one of those to the Janek Gwizdala thing at PeteAcademy's shop, just so that StingrayPete could ignore me. Still, at least Janek didn't smack me over the head, so maybe things have blown over... Easy,
It would be funny to see Mr Clutterbuck installed to the dictionary to be honest, ie waiter drops a tray of cutlery and crockery and everyone remarks "that was a bit of a Clutterbuck!" When being shown around a sheet metal molding factory I remarked "it's a bit Clutterbuck in here!"
Ah, you mean like this?

I generally fret rather than using open strings. Occasionally open strings serve better, like on "Rocky Mountain Way" or "Radar Love". And of course it's easier to play harmonics on open strings.

Some pictures: Through-neck construction, passive with two pickups, each with volume and tone controls. 34" scale, 19mm string spacing at the bridge. Near immaculate condition, there's a tiny mark on the edge of the top bout but it's almost invisible, I only found it through feeling all over for dings. Bought for use as a spare bass at jam nights but never used as the jam night it was intended for stopped. Doesn't seem to be any point me keeping it, and I thought I'd try to raise some funds for GAS...

I thought I'd give a little nudge on this here. Four-string neck-through bass, passive, 34", more details and photos on the Ebay entry. Priced at £125 for BIN, but as the start price is £70 and no-one's bid yet, it could well be had for less.

Pop/rock covers band - on the side that the guitarist doesn't want to be. He suffers from a strange dichotomy between wanting to be visible and being incapable of any sort of movement on stage, but he does seem to be starting to smile occasionally. Blues band - stage left, as guitarist is a left-hooker so that way we both have headstocks pointing away from the vocalist. Who happens to be Mrs Zero, hence wanting to take precautions against smacking her in the face with a headstock. Ceilidh band - stage left, because that's where I've gravitated to.

I prefer white spirit. It also goes better with fish (meths with red meat, as any fule kno).

Ergo Instruments 5-string EUB SOLD
tauzero replied to tauzero's topic in EUBs & Double Basses For Sale

"These basses are currently discontinued by Warwick Custom Shop and features the Buzzard style headstock & are only available now as the standard option or normal Warwick headstock as the standard option through Warwick Custom Shop although these older models of the Stryker are far more superior all round in looks & sound as opposed to the newer models Warwick Custom Shop are currently issueing." Murderers get shorter sentences than that.

I'm not using the Ergo, I never quite managed to settle down with the 5th string (although I play 5 and 6 string basses) and I'm using the WAV4 whenever I actually do anything EUBish, so I've decided it's about time to try to move it on. I haven't got any piccies at the moment but it's one of these in a natural finish: http://www.ergoinstruments.com/EUB_5_String.html and includes the stand (which is pretty good). There isn't a case though. Looking for around the £450 mark plus shipping.
Good Lord, imagine the shame of buying a bass from someone with poor spelling.
It means you get to find out where they live, so you can put them out of everybody else's misery. Innit.

Oh, it's certainly not worth getting worked up about. Looking at other people's auctions for inspiration is a good idea (or looking at the auctions which sell very cheaply, so you know what to try and avoid when writing yours). However, it's a good idea not to actually cut and paste chunks, but rather to reword it...
-
I agree that you shouldn't just assume you'll get an encore and do one regardless. I think I've managed to make that point now with the covers band - with one former band, the guitarist/vocalist would insist on doing an encore regardless of whether there was any call for one, or even any applause (we generally went down pretty well but you certainly wouldn't say that we were always asked for an encore). Plan for one but don't do it automatically.
-
I don't use effects with the blues band or the ceilidh band (actually, I did use effects on one occasion with the ceilidh band, just for fun). I do with the other covers band, although I really need to spend a bit of time experimenting properly with the effects unit (Korg AX3000B) to get a few more sounds out of it. I've got a MIDI pickup on one of the basses but either there's something not quite right with it or the guitar to MIDI unit I'm using (Yamaha G50) isn't very good at bass (I suspect the latter).

Even pay split between function band members
tauzero replied to harvey1-8's topic in General Discussion
Currently I'm supplying PA (vocal for the two covers bands which also serves for instrument duties for the ceilidh band). As I want a PA for other purposes (acoustic duetting with Mrs Zero), I don't mind that. Covers bands both use all members to try to get bookings. Ceilidh band has enquiries mainly through the website, which come to me and Mrs Zero, and Mrs Zero (who is also the caller for the band) handles the bookings. Money in all the bands is split evenly. Costs for recording etc are also spread evenly. -
i personally do not like the sound of light weight amps.
So do you think that a Superfly sounds better when the aluminium casing is on than when it's off?
-
If you use the Superfly with a loud bass (so you don't run into the lack of preamp gain problem), and a loud cab or are not in too loud a band (so you don't run into the lack of power problem), and don't push it too hard or remove it from the aluminium outer case (so you don't run into the appalling cooling problem), and like a relatively clean uncoloured tone then it'll work just fine (assuming you don't get one of the many unreliable examples).
I don't have a loud bass, all mine are perfectly capable of driving the preamp to clipping if I just turn the gain control up. My 500 was OK on power (I only used one channel with the Tech Soundsystem 4x10) but I got the Superduperfly so I didn't have to turn up quite so far. The Superduperfly also has a top-mounted fan and doesn't get finger-singeingly warm like the 500. I wouldn't mind changing for another lightweight, but only so I can use all the power instead of 50% of it (I may just do a little judicious rewiring of the 4x10 to help with that).
