1. Reading this thread, I'm struck by how different people define "light". A Hartke VX410 "very light"? From a personal perspective, with the assistance of my ever-complaining back, I have drawn up a definition of weights of cabs. Featherweight - under 15kg, eg. BFM Omni 10.5 Lightweight - under 25kg, eg. Peavey TVX 210, Tech Soundsystems ND410S Middleweight - under 35kg, eg. Hartke VX410 [s]Fat fsckers[/s] Heavyweight - the rest And (a bit like the Beaufort scale) what they mean in practical terms: Featherweight - one-handed lift, carry it anywhere Lightweight - two-handed lift (because our hands are precious), can carry it up stairs or a couple of hundred metres without resting Middleweight - can get it out of the boot, and carry it a few metres before resting Heavyweight - either get the rest of the band involved or reverse the car up to the side of the stage and leave it in the boot
  2.
Not sure if Kalim still has my old Tech Soundsystems 4x10. Was in the For Sale listing several weeks back. I used both an ABM500 and 300 with it at one point. Clear, punchy, not boomy.
It's now sat in my lounge. I still have to have a decent play with the Superfly to explore the sound but I'd agree entirely with that description. It's a keeper...
  3. With the clothing shown in that photo of the video screen (which looks just like the Joker's stooges in the first Batman film) and that big inflatable figure on the stage (just like the Joker's inflatable figures), was there actually some deliberate reference to Batman going on or is it just the voices in my head suggesting it?
  4. When I bought a cab recently, I took my Superfly with me to check it out. The cab is Speakon only and I had a jack-speakon lead plus a jack-speakon adaptor. I put the jack-speakon adaptor onto the lead so I had a speakon-speakon lead, plugged it in, and there was no life whatsoever. Took it out, took the adaptor off, plugged the jack end of the lead into the Superfly, and it fired up no problem. I haven't checked out the leads yet but I suspect a short and that it has short-circuit protection, so that might be an avenue to explore.

    RIP R,5,R,5...

    My condolences too.
  6.
I have my first gig with them on double bass next week, followed by another gig with them on the S.S. Great Brittain
Does the SS Great Britain use standard tuning? At least take a BG along with you in case you start feeling like your fingers are falling off. You might not need it but it'll be there if you're getting pain or heavily blistered.
  7. Another happy buyer - Kalim was very helpful and friendly, and I finished up the happy owner of a Tech Soundsystems 4x10.
  8.
No, and reading it back I don't see how you're reading it that way?
I see what jakesbass means - if you read it one way, it looks like you've divided sad blokes into two groups, and you don't belong in the "most" group but there's an implication that you're in the other group. I wouldn't have described it as grammatical though.
  9. Channelling dave_bass5 - social club on Saturday, guitarist's recently repaired amp started cutting out in the first song, eventually put him into the keyboard amp and the keyboard into the PA. Place was actually moderately lively, although since I first played there with this band about three years ago, things have got gradually worse. Got a chance to have a play through the new Tech Soundsystems speaker in anger, and jolly good it was too. I need to do some playing around to get the best out of it though.
  10. I'm sure Doctor Nick sticks another fenceful on every six months or so.
  11. Playing with a ceilidh band which is melodeon, dulcimer, guitar, and me, which means I'm the main supplier of rhythm but I like to put a good selection of notes in, with a slightly better than even chance of them actually fitting.
  12.
I was on the brink of buying a Bass off Basschatter AREA who is based in Germany. one well known caarrier kept on saying it could not transport the bass and another quoted £100. i'm sure i could have got it cheaper if had stuck at it but i gave up. shame really, it was a lovely bass and AREA is a really nice guy.
A couple of years ago, I bought a Warwick in a hard case from a German ebay seller and the shipping was something like £20. I've had other instruments from German sellers (Palatino upright, NS WAV-4) and they were similar shipping rates. Germany to UK seems considerably cheaper than UK to Germany.
  13. I had the offer of a Hofner violin bass for £75 (about 20 years ago) and didn't buy it because it was such a dreadful thing to play.
  14. There's also a couple of ebay sellers in the USA and Canada who do them at very reasonable prices - just put "bass piezo bridge" into an ebay search.
  15.
Oh, and regarding going to a Bass Bash - I did go to one a while back. Outskirts of Northampton, IIRC? While I enjoyed looking at all the amazing instruments and gear, I felt very intimidated and completely out of my depth. But that's just me.
I went to that one too. I've been playing in bands for 35 years and I felt intimidated and out of my depth... There are two hurdles to overcome. The first is getting up for the first time. The second is getting up for the second time. The first time you get up, you will almost inevitably make mistakes or not play as well as you would like. If you play perfectly, getting up for the second time won;t be a problem - if you don't, as long as you know you can play better, you must make the effort to do it again. Mrs Zero made her first steps in public performance, singing, about four years ago. I knew she could sing, and we did three John Denver numbers at an open mic night and TBH she really didn't sing very well at all. I knew she was better than that first performance showed, so I got her back on stage at the next one and as she got to enjoy doing it more and more, her performance improved correspondingly. That same open mic night has nurtured quite a few new performers over the years. A supportive atmosphere is a great help.
  16. A couple of BFM cabs, a home-made one, and a Hartke kickback combo: http://shop.ebay.co.uk/merchant/dipterror
  17.
BASS DAY UK 22.11.09 The largest UK bass event in Manchester city centre.
Just how many UK bass events in Manchester city centre are there? I'm a little tempted but it'll cost me a few bob to get there. Are there some good discounts to be had on strings'n'things there?
  18.
We use it as a get out of jail free card when people come up with the plainly stupid idea of holding a barn dance in a real working barn .. Doh! But it's good for making sure they shell out for the proper flooring in a tent too. Bear in mind we are "causing" the guests to 'urtle across the floor at break neck speed (Sic) and therefore should have done all we can to make sure our "working area" is safe.
Mrs Zero warns dancers to be sure they're not wearing unsuitable shoes, but unfortunately the other day one woman wore shoes that came off as Mrs Zero was demonstrating a dance with her. Woman fell, Mrs Zero fell with her, trying to keep her up. Woman was OK, Mrs Zero is still feeling the effects two weeks (and two barn dances) later. We're doing a barn dance in a real barn in a couple of weeks, but it appears to have a flat floor so should be OK...
  19.
I don't really have any suggestions for numbers, but I found that playing E on the B string, rather than open E changed my style and made playing easier, rather than worrying about playing below the 5th fret on the B.
You can also find yourself part-shifting to make fingering a bit easier - we do one song ("Hey Baby", absolute drivel) that goes A F# B E (I think) and instead of playing it based on the 2nd fret and stretching up for the A (open streengs? We don't want no steenking open streengs), I shifted to the 5th fret which made everything a bit easier.
  20. I'd like to come to a future one - couldn't manage it this time as it was a rather hectic weekend and my parents and Mrs Zero's mum were all visiting on Father's Day.

  22.
Hey I don't doubt that he knows exactly what he's talking about - in fact I'll concede that he's probably right. All I'm saying is that my sig is never the same and therefore it is feasible that Hans-Peter Wilfer suffers the same unfortunate affliction, hence it is inconclusive to judge it solely upon that.
I'd expect two sigs from the same person to have more resemblance than that. There are obvious difference in all three names, the H and W at the start of the first and last for a start and the fact that the "s" of Hans is completely separate in one and just as obviously joined in the other.
  23.
In the event of any disagreement between you and a Moderator or Administrator, you agree you shall not disclose the nature of these disagreements to any third parties.
That's inherently impossible in its current form. Mod A says "I like Warwicks", BBC says "Warwicks are horrid" (or Mod B says "I like Fenders", I say "Fenders are horrid"), and the nature of the disagreement is open to at the very least the entirety of Basschat (if in Off-topic), and at worst the entire world (if in any other sub-forum). And while Basschat isn't a democracy, this would prevent moderators being held to account for their actions, whatever they are. Especially as immediately before that is the sentence
By using this web site or any service provided, you explicitly agree that you shall comply with any request made by a Moderator or Administrator in regard to your conduct and use of the forum.
which nowhere states that the request must be reasonable. So a mod could request that someone append "I am always wrong" to every one of their posts [1], and this request would have to be complied with and no discussion with anyone else allowed. [1] Reductio ad absurdo comes in quite handy in instances like this.
  24.
I just don't understand the thinking behind 'Relic-ing'....
It's to give the appearance that you're so wealthy you don't give a toss what happens to your gear because you can always go out and buy some more. It also serves to remind people of how unsuitable the finish applied to Fenders is for musical instruments which might actually be used.
I wonder if anyone has ever bought a brand new car/motorcycle and relic-ed it?
It was the entire basis of Reliant's business model.
