My first bass was a Bass 7 by Rosetti. It was utter, utter sh*te. In fact there's a singlecut double pickup version of the one I had, with a similar ghastly greenburst, for £500 in another auction.

As in function, rather than appearance. There are two knobs, but the B level only has any effect when you're using it with one input and two outputs. The A level always changes the level of the A output (the one and only output when you're using it with two ins and one out) but the level controls are for the output levels, not the input, so the A level control will change the level of both inputs.

I've got a GK 200MB (predecessor to the MB150). Had to replace the speaker in it some time back as the edge of the cone had just deteriorated and fallen to bits. I replaced it with an Eminence Alpha as I couldn't afford a genuine replacement at £130. I also have a Hartke HA1200 kickback 12" combo (which now has an Eminence Alpha in it). It's a bit bigger and heavier than the GK, but the sound is much fuller. You can't beat the GKs for lightness, but you can beat them for tone for not a lot more weight and bulk.

I use a simpleish home-made A-B box to switch between Warwick Thumb and NS WAV-4, and then run the output from that through a Korg AX3000B so I can select different effects and EQ for the instruments.

Wonder if it's worth telling him that Americans don't make the best basses, Germans do...

One really odd thing was his responses to questions on a Vox AC50 which are obviously responses to questions about a Jap (or Korean) Fender (or Squier) Strat. Another odd thing was that his feedback is 98.3% positive, which is pretty good considering his attitude.

Then someone started citing web pages at me, so I wrote a web page that said that the apostrophe was wrong and cited it back at him...

Going with the electric bass also means you'll have a much wider selection to choose from, and you'll be able to test more of them out. For an amp, avoid the cheapo Stagg/Eastcoast ones (anything really, really small anyway) and try to find a second-hand one such as a Hartke kickback (there's plenty more compact inexpensive combos, like Warwicks, Laneys, and Peaveys, but I haven't any personal experience of them).

Friday night - ceilidh in Moseley, Brum, to raise money for the MS Society, or more accurately, to raise money for [url="http://www.ttt2009.com/tour.html"]a big fund-raiser by the MS Society[/url]. There weren't as many people there as we'd have liked, but most of those there did join in the dancing. We played pretty well (except for my truly dreadful solo at the end) and it was a generally Good Time. Saturday night - gig with the ad hoc blues band (which may or may not be called Skam) at the gardener's club - a sort of clubhouse and bar on the allotments at the back of Cannon Hill Park in Brum. Unfortunately we were on last, and by the time that we got on, the audience consisted of WAGs without the AG, and a couple of old friends (one of whom may well be about to recruit me to his band). We played well though, and we've got another gig with the same organiser back at his normal pub venue at the end of April.

I'm seeking to restore his sense of humour . Anyway, think how much publicity he'd get if his Q&A went the same way as that Rover 214 did.

Gold is used to coat contacts because it's very non-reactive, so it stays clean. Silver tarnishes so it's not as good for surface coating on contacts. If you're making a soldered joint, though, the coating is irrelevant.
