Friday - the new (to me) band's first public outing after a couple of parties, at the Adam and Eve in Brum. Not only the first time I've played there, it's also (rather surprisingly) the first time I've ever actually set foot in the place. Started at 10.30, did two sets and finished at about 1.30 with lots of sweaty dancing people around us. Much fun, the gafferess liked us, so hopefully there will be plenty more gigs there. Saturday - a wedding reception for the ceilidh band in a (quite nice) church hall in Stourbridge. Just for a change, the buffet was on while we finished setting up, rather than an hour or so in like normal. Normally, the first hour consists of a few people getting up to dance while everyone else waits for the buffet, but they were up for dancing from the start. As most of the guests had children, they gradually evaporated through the evening, so we finished up at 10.30, which was nice for Mrs Zero and I as we hadn't got to bed till about 4 in the morning. Oh, and we made use of Mrs Zero's new satnav for the first time, and jolly useful it was too. It's nice not being shouted at when you don't turn at the right place...

In this case, you hadn't turned the gig down because you were all available on the original date, so you'd accepted the gig and would have had to cancel the rescheduled gig rather than turning it down. Or have you actually cancelled other gigs because one of the other members was unavailable? I'd wish them well, I wouldn't mind having a bassist to dep for me very occasionally when I get schedule collisions.

If Carl paid for it by Paypal, he'd have the seller's email address in his Paypal history.

I replaced it with a normal stereo cable and it was fine.

I'm another one who (generally) plays it unplugged first. If some friendly assistant has plugged it in for me, it would be churlish of me to unplug it, so I just ignore the noise coming out of the amp while I have a play around checking for playability (and hope everyone else ignores it too). As for pieces of music, that'll be Mustang Sally, or the Toccata and Fugue in Dm by Bach (BWV 565, not BWV 566, which is a completely different Toccata and Fugue in Dm). And a slap bassline to an old original song or two (just slap, no pop), and another bassline to an old original song with sliding forced harmonics if it's a fretless.

I wear my bass high enough to be clear of the belt buckle, especially when additionally deflected by my stomach. That's when I'm not wearing a T-shirt which covers the belt buckle. Plus I don't have any painted or lacquered basses, they're all natural finish.

You said that you bought what your favourite players used. I rate (for example) Chris Squire highly but I wouldn't buy a Rick, and nor would I particularly want his sound as I'm not keen on it. It also doesn't make much sense just to buy one bit of the chain. You really need the same instrument, effects, amp, cab, strings, and fingers.

Mind you, it's pretty heavy to suspend by a couple of slightly flimsy plates and when I tried rack-mounting mine, I stuck a bit of wood under it to give it a little support. Where did you get the Superfly 1000? You must have hit a minute sales window... I'd rather like a Superfly with a knackered output to use as a pre-amp. Anyone got one?

I've got a double-neck Atrics 5-string fretted and 4-string fretless that I might be parting with...
