1. I use a simpleish home-made A-B box to switch between Warwick Thumb and NS WAV-4, and then run the output from that through a Korg AX3000B so I can select different effects and EQ for the instruments.
  2. Wonder if it's worth telling him that Americans don't make the best basses, Germans do...
  3.
Another Carlsbro... More reasonably priced for now! Were these things any good back in the day?
I liked mine. Not a Cobra though, never tried a Cobra bass amp but the Cobra PA amp was woefully weedy.
  4. One really odd thing was his responses to questions on a Vox AC50 which are obviously responses to questions about a Jap (or Korean) Fender (or Squier) Strat. Another odd thing was that his feedback is 98.3% positive, which is pretty good considering his attitude.
  5. That's not a guitar, it's a sledge.
  6.
To boldly split infinitives has been OK for a while now ... Language moves on. Oxford commas are too .. If Saint Lynne Truss says it's OK then that's fine with me
Actually, I'm quite happy with split infinitives, as long as people know how to elegantly split them. And I've used Oxford commas for years. But Lynne Truss - pah. I got into a minor flame war in one newsgroup about the apostrophe in "three day's/days notice". I think that the apostrophe is wrong and that it should be "three days notice". The reason put forward is that it is "notice of three days", to which I reply that "eyes of blue" wouldn't be written "blue's eyes". Then someone started citing web pages at me, so I wrote a web page that said that the apostrophe was wrong and cited it back at him...
  7.
I wouldn't go down the NS route for classical or jazz. I had one for a few years before I got my first SLB100 and now realise how much it held me back as a double bassist.
What did you find about it that held you back? Not that I'm playing classical or jazz, but I'm interested in where the deficiencies are.
  8. Going with the electric bass also means you'll have a much wider selection to choose from, and you'll be able to test more of them out. For an amp, avoid the cheapo Stagg/Eastcoast ones (anything really, really small anyway) and try to find a second-hand one such as a Hartke kickback (there's plenty more compact inexpensive combos, like Warwicks, Laneys, and Peaveys, but I haven't any personal experience of them).
  9.
I bought a LG1000 at Reverb for 300 today, I need some cabs to drive with it though
Could I interest you in a DR250? Or a Tuba 24?
  10. Friday night - ceilidh in Moseley, Brum, to raise money for the MS Society, or more accurately, to raise money for a big fund-raiser by the MS Society. There weren't as many people there as we'd have liked, but most of those there did join in the dancing. We played pretty well (except for my truly dreadful solo at the end) and it was a generally Good Time. Saturday night - gig with the ad hoc blues band (which may or may not be called Skam) at the gardener's club - a sort of clubhouse and bar on the allotments at the back of Cannon Hill Park in Brum. Unfortunately we were on last, and by the time that we got on, the audience consisted of WAGs without the AG, and a couple of old friends (one of whom may well be about to recruit me to his band). We played well though, and we've got another gig with the same organiser back at his normal pub venue at the end of April.
  11. I'm seeking to restore his sense of humour . Anyway, think how much publicity he'd get if his Q&A went the same way as that Rover 214 did.
  12.
nice, i've always wondering why more people don't use silver for electronics rather than gold, it being cheaper and more conductive....
It depends what you're using it for. Gold is used to coat contacts because it's very non-reactive, so it stays clean. Silver tarnishes so it's not as good for surface coating on contacts. If you're making a soldered joint, though, the coating is irrelevant.
  13.
Actually, now you come to mention it, when the statii crew all met up at the O2 arena a few weeks ago, the proportion of us that were bald with glasses was quite alarming, LOL!
Sounds like I'm destined to own a Status then...
  14. I've actually had quite a few people say how lovely my Warwicks are. Sadly, they've all been male.
  15. Worth looking at Schecters as well for slim fast necks.
  16.
MB1. The Hohner neck is chunkier more rounded too, whereas the Status tends to be flatter backed and a much smoother feel.
I find the Hohner a bit too chunky for me, so it sounds as if the Status would be better. Must try one out sometime.
  17.
I can't make out whether it's a crack or just the grain.
It looks like the front edge of the laminate has lifted slightly.
  18. Let's see if there's a reply to "Do u no anywun that cud do a relic job on this i rekon it would look wikkid"...
  19. Every time I see the thread title "Things to never do", I think "split infinitives".
  20.
And perhaps more to the point - van anyone suggest a different set up of about the same dimensions I could try (that'll compete with a couple of loud R&B bands!)
GK 200MB? The predecessor to the MB150. Sounds like the construction is different - the sides of the MB200 bolt on with some sealant at the joint. I have a 200MB and a Hartke 120W kickback which also has a 1x12" speaker, is a similar height and width but a bit deeper and a bit heavier, and I think has a better tone than the GK (although I've had to replace the driver in the GK so it might not be as good as the original). Or get a small head and an Omni 10.5.
  21.
Most of them! Pickup surround screws (small raised countersunk) Bridge screws (larger plain csk, only 2 out os 5 present!) in black finish. I'll check Axesrus' site, cheers
There's packs of them sold on That Ebay by Janika's music shop. Looks a good price for a big bag of screws.

    Backup amps
Has anyone ever had an amp fail and had to use their backup amp?
Not me, but our guitarist has been having amp problems for the last three or four gigs (thought it was sorted but it wasn't) and it was so bad at one that he switched to the keyboard player's Roland combo and she got plugged into the PA. I do take a backup amp for the covers band (the ceilidh band has a PA that I'd just go straight into if necessary) - main amp is a Superfly, backup is one of those little Crate Powerblocks with a lead to bypass the built-in distortion.
  23. Are the neck profiles on Statuseses identical (for a given number of strings, anyway)? And how similar is the 5-string neck profile to the Hohner Jack (if anyone should happen to have tried both)?
  24.
Glove sizes? What century are you fellas from?
Gloves are an important part of a motorcyclist's attire. In order to purchase a glove of the optimum dimensions, one may refer to the standardised "size" of the glove, and thence proceed to purchase the item wherein the size marked accords with the dimensions of one's own anatomy.
  25.

I can't even manage OFPF in first position on 34"...
You're not supposed to. Your third and fourth fingers are supposed to double up.
Only if you've got really really girlie hands. I've got fairly girlie hands (glove size - 9. Mrs Zero's glove size - 9) and I can do OFPF in 2nd position (I have no need to do it in first but I'm sure I could).
