Your best (and worst!) bass gear purchases of 2023?
tauzero replied to Al Krow's topic in General Discussion
They're pioneering a new form of short scale. -
One email list I'm on just puts a name in the email subject, nothing else, to signify that they've snuffed it. This has led to me having the occasional double take in BC when some bassist's name is the subject of a topic. Still, I wouldn't worry too much about lacking empathy, as Annie Nightingale probably isn't reading BC.

Fitting Passive Switch and Circuit to Ibanez SRMD 200
tauzero replied to Obrienp's topic in Repairs and Technical
You might not find it easy to get a stacked log and lin pot, which is what you'd need for stacked vol/tone. -
Just what the world needs - another Fender clone.
-
You might consider a multieffects pedal that can handle both guitar and bass. Don't bother with an amp.

Did I just buy a knockoff Hipshot Tuner
tauzero replied to mationdude's topic in Repairs and Technical
The licensed ones appear to have "Hipshot" on them, although Hipshot may have been lazy and used photos of their own products to illustrate the licensed ones.- 13 replies

Severely Cracked finish on a 1975 Olympic White Precision
tauzero replied to Bassman78's topic in Repairs and Technical
Although if they reply telling you all their employees who worked in the paint shop 50 years ago are dead, you should take precautions when removing the paint, such as not eating it. -
The Millenium (yes, they can't spell) kits sold by Thomann get pretty good reviews. I'm tempted myself, except a) I can't play and 2) I haven't got any room whatsoever for one.

It can trigger sounds off USB synth modules (for instance, at the cheaper end, https://www.midiplus.com.tw/en/product-detail/miniEngineUSB/ [1]), and off standard MIDI modules/keyboards if you have a MIDI host to USB interface (I built one for about £20). [1] Taiwanese, so if you find it on AliExpress, the invasion has happened

Testing/recording cabs 115 112 210 212... all things being equal
tauzero replied to warwickhunt's topic in Amps and Cabs
Don't cross the streams. As volume does change perception, perhaps make recordings with gain and volume set identically for each cab, and then import each recording into Audacity and use the Normalize function to get them all to the same volume. Then use both sets of recordings, with explanations, for listening tests. -
Another one just remembered. In Hi Ho Silver Lining, I heard "Flies are in your pea soup baby, they're waving at me" as "Flattering your features baby, then way beneath", which makes at least as much sense as the original.

No lightweight but what a bargain (currently)
tauzero replied to TheGreek's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Just hope their car has adequate suspension, and that it's for permanent installation. -
It appears that three people have seen something in it that none of us has, it's up to £26. That's surely at least £26 more than it's worth. Is there some incredibly valuable component that we've all overlooked?

A real shame. I hadn't realised how old she was - 83 when she reached the runoff groove.

There's always the plus a small head such as the Gnome, Elf, etc.

It's still possible to download from Pirate Bay - you just have to use a VPN. Er, so I've been told.

They add length if you leave the strap on. If you take it off, they might add a millimetre or two.

True, but they've already got the different finish bodies for the fixed-scale 150x instruments. It's also a bit surprising that the only fretless is a 5-stringer which makes it even more niche (I speak as a 5-string player who is aware that there are larger numbers of 4-string players out there). The one instrument that they've put a pretty finish on but with Barts is the 1265MS, which shows that they can do it. A 1265F would have me definitely considering failing the abstinence challenge, whereas I find paint finishes a complete turn-off (I realise that this is an entirely subjective and self-centred POV). I assume that the EHB range has been successful as they are enlarging it a bit - I wouldn't think they'd just put a few different finishes out there to try and make an unsuccessful range successful.

ERNIE's first iteration used the noise generated in a neon cold-cathode tube as the basis for its random numbers. https://ernie.virtualcolossus.co.uk/ernie.html The lava lamp one featured in an episode of NCIS where a wall full of lava lamps gets dumped on the floor. Just a random fact.
-
The documentation for the random() function says that it's a pseudo-random sequence, and if you use the randomSeed() function with the same number, you'll get the same sequence (presumably it's always the same sequence, only the starting point differs). I suspect that it's a sequence intended to avoid repetition so it will give a pretty even distribution, which I presume is your desired outcome. You could assess its suitability just by generating a list of random numbers in your desired range and seeing if they would be suitable.

Severely Cracked finish on a 1975 Olympic White Precision
tauzero replied to Bassman78's topic in Repairs and Technical
I can't see much point in sending pictures to Fender. After all, their paint shop has probably changed somewhat over the last 49 years. -
Well, who saw a Stylophone Theremin coming?
tauzero replied to Woodinblack's topic in Other Instruments
Mrs Zero has a theremin squirrelled away somewhere that I bought her for birthday/Christmas - I think it was this one https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/305344846057. There are a load of a new variety on That Ebay at around £50, eg https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/295896292092 (or £33 from AliExpress, https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004857001691.html). -
Buying straplocks implies that you've bought a bass. Surely nobody would buy a bass without immediately buying straplocks for it?

perhaps? A Youtube search on "music video video wall backdrop" gives various results which may be of use, and a search for "video wall backdrop free" returns a variety of royalty free videos. Somewhat left-field thought here - the Old Grey Whistle Test used to use very old cartoon animations for visual accompaniment to some songs, presumably where a video wasn't available. Might that work as a backdrop? Example here:
