Tonight's second set cancelled - nobody in the pub
gafbass02 replied to The Dark Lord's topic in General Discussion
Weve often been asked to play till midnight and started later for it. Not too bad when it's not a long drive home. -
When is a covers band not a covers band?

Thanks, he's a new guy doing a great job learning almost three hours worth of stuff while we gig every weekend. Proper deep end stuff, not to mention learning his craft at the same time. -
Me first and the Gimme Gimmes
My band are a very similar idea. We play sort of blink 182/green day style versions of pop classics from the 80's to today. Many only recognisable from the melody and basic chord progression. I play guitar and sing, I can do neither, just basic power chords is really it. We have a basic vocal pa only. The bass player is very basic and has to borrow my amp, he plays a beaten up old five string with the B taken off. Booked every weekend into 2013. Folks love it. -
Yep mid freq. it's a simply amazing amp. Really has the vibe of my old 'lead sled' amps in a modern package.

This one, cause it came preloaded, but I do intend to replace the eq with the graphic when I can afford it.

Using Bass cabs as a P.A. - anyone done it? (Barefaced in particular)
gafbass02 replied to Jesso's topic in Amps and Cabs
I've often wondered this about my bergantino AE210's tbh -
I use a MoMark tube 800. Utterly love it, flattens the Genz Shuttle 9.0 I had previously in every way apart from size and weight.

I've had two jazz bridge pickups randomly fail now. Suddenly gone all weird and wimpy sounding. Nothing else changed, just suddenly they didn't work properly anymore. Bizarre.
Which venue in Swindon...being localish I always like a review!!
It's 'famous' and they serve 'ale' and it's a bit like a big 'house'

Aged bass parts......are they available in the uk?
gafbass02 replied to surfguy13's topic in Bass Guitars
GR guitars, in the US but I've always done well with them. -
Terrifying! Arrived to be confronted by a grotty venue empty but for two full on NF neo nazis, wearing neo nazi badges, spiderwebs tattoo'd on their heads, bomber jackets and cherry red boots the works. No more than twenty people all night, looked like the set of shameless, don't think they appreciated our rocked up covers of pop classics much. Swindon just doesn't get what we do at all!! Fine everywhere else, but Swindon just seemed befuddled by the whole 'rocked up pop' thing.

Definitely a lucky escape mate.

hah hah. I did the tribute bit briefly, rather more 'soundalike than lookalike' though My tribute days are behind me now, I could only aspire to the greatness shown above. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFw1HDUJGz0&sns=em

Can't believe they dumped a mate for a label like that!! Twonks. Utter twonks. Hope it works out for you bud
-
Totally sucks mate. Out of interest what sort of deal are we talking about here? Indie label? Local thing? Multinational mega corp? Or one if those people who 'owns a label'? Just wondering really, I'd be interested to see what becomes of them (hopefully nothing;)

Made my day. As ever

LOVE IT!!

I made the shift from a huge pedal board to a zoom multi fx and never looked back. The B9.1 has been perfect for me, I used the guitar version too. Sadly I've gigged it to death and now it's got to go back to zoom for a fix, but it's still a fabulous sounding thing, soooo much easier to live with too.

I didn't enjoy the sound of that rig either, horses and courses eh

I've said it before but back in the days of bassist I used to love the 'My bass is' feature. Always wanted to see my blue jazz in there. I've still got all my old bassist mags, and as someone else has said, I still read them! Much more than my BGM's of which I have every issue. (if anyone would part with the copy of bassist with flea on the front I'd soil myself in joy, I think it's the only one I missed due to extreme poverty!) I find I'm less and less bothered by BGM's appalling repetition these days. Endless interviews from a template: 'No I don't play five strings, I don't slap because I can't, my first bass was a Squier precision, I've still got it, I play a p bass cause it cuts through' repeat ad nauseum etc etc Then three reviews of basses over a grand at best, and a ton of blobs and sticks at the back. Look at bassist and as well as the excellent 'my bass is' there's 'classic basses', excellent and varied reviews of things like transmitters, wah pedals, multi fx, odd little bits and bobs, budget and mid and top end basses etc. I'll give the latest editor a go for a few issues, there are signs it's improving. It's somehow missed the mark for a long time now, but after bassist went under im still grateful just to have a bassists magazine in this Internet age. I buy it more out of habit and 'wanting it to be there' than for the info these days. Just wish there was more pages of varied and real world gear than endless players 'interviews by rote' and contributors being all 'zen'. Tell me about basses, Amps and bassy/gigging gadgets and stuff I might not know I need! Live sound tips, gigging tips, funny gig stories page maybe. Long post, sorry.

Hah hah. Godamn iPhone auto correct! Thinks it knows everything!!
-
Hah hah. After 20 years gigging and over 65 vases (ahem.. BASSES!) both active and passive I reckon the stabilisers are well off lol. Funnily enough I eventually ditched actives altogether and went back to all jazz basses, I found they just worked better for me live, less faff and sound better with drive. Horses for courses etc Know what you mean though, it's always everyone else tells the bass player what they should use. Had that a lot!

These two tracks were recorded on my gorgeous streamer LX I loved it but found it didn't suit rock as much, it seemed to sit over the mix more than in it. Loved that bass. http://www.myspace.com/gafbass/music/songs/08-ill-make-a-man-out-of-you-mp3-79099463 http://www.myspace.com/gafbass/music/songs/10-the-mans-a-creep-mp3-79099673 Here's my old FNA jazzman in a different setting entirely, yet sounds really similar to the LX (bass starts at 3:42, it's only a soundcheck jam) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BR8gDjHpN2o&sns=em In the first 20 seconds here, again messing around at a soundcheck it sounds more like an (active) jazz (to me) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxYmgW4s6qw&sns=em And here, (when you can pick it out in the mix), the same bass with the same settings sounds more like a ray (to me!) http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tG-B4Mbqgds Funny things warwicks. Played em for Years but found I always needed a good old passive jazz on hand. Nearly every time I took one in the studio I ended up playing the jazz. I still miss that streamer LX though, and a tasty stage 1 I had. Sorry for the old videos
