Do you consider yourself an "expert" bass player?
gafbass02 replied to Jam's topic in General Discussion
After 20 years I consider myself a total beginner still. So much more to learn. The comments above really ring with me. As soon as someone starts playing reggae or blues I'm soooo far out my comfort zone it's ridiculous. -
Covers bands "openers" what do you start with?
gafbass02 replied to witterth's topic in General Discussion
Depends if I'm stalling for more folks to arrive If its a bit dead I'll chuck away a few spare songs 'The Look' by roxette springs to mind. I try to never play the same set twice but our most prolific set opener is 'Wherever Whenever' by shakira, into 'Holding out for a hero' into 'hungry like the wolf'. then again our set is a little different to most -
I quite agree - someone just has to see electric things like guitar, speakers, mics and thinks that its all too loud before you even start yet the same person listens to live orchestras which probably have as much a max SPL as we might produce. It is a perception thing - incorrect of course - but their perception. It does knock you though. But in my example above, I have learned to ignore the comment as I know it's based on wrong perceptions.
Totally and utterly this.

I still love the Larry Graham blingy funk vibe I'd buy one
Billy Sheehan swears by it. He says as he usually practices with his bass unplugged, that the amount of high to low is much less than when plugged in, so he reigns it back in with a compressor. The result being his practice sound is nearer to what it sounds like on stage, just different in volume.
Very much this. I won't play without a compressor, I've been through all the fancy ones and ended up back with a trusty old boss cs3. I just like the way it provides a nice, consistent, even response, adds sparkle and attack and increases touch sensitivity. I don't find any lack of dynamics at all. Any slightly negative effect on tone is so slight in a band mix as to be a non issue. But I just find its become such a part of my whole technique and sound. If you're the sort of player to switch between fingers and thumb, harmonics and tapping etc all in the course of a song it's a really handy tool. I leave one in my bass bag
Well, they're basically a bunch of digital samples stuffed into the same box. There's no way it's going to sound good. Multi-Efx might be good if you don't know what effects you want, or what brands to buy, but for a regularly gigging musician in a relatively popular band, you're going to want something real.
What about this regularly gigging musician, and has been for twenty years, in some VERY popular bands? One band sold something like 10,000 albums featuring zoom multi fx, used em on some of the UK's biggest stages too . I've owned a huge range of carefully chosen fx, including running multiple boards for specific tasks. Over 60 basses owned, many boutique and many rigs. Fine tuned my sound right down to the patch cabling. A few years ago I ditched my separate pedals for a zoom B9.1ut and I've never, ever looked back One of the most completely satisfying bits of bass kit I've bought (along with my Bergantinos). It really Is outstanding. It just takes a savvy ear and some time and care spent crafting the sounds. I modelled each of mine on an existing sound from my old pedal board, carefully A/B-ing as I went. Infact it's always on, as I made my perfectly (for me) eq'd and compressed clean tone first and put into all the patches, then added fx over that. Patch one in every bank is the just the clean sound. So it's never bypassed, it's my basic, go-to tone, into the MoMark and bergs and hey presto. Very versatile clean tone too. Sparkle to thud to burble with a roll of the wrist/ finger/volume or tone control. Utter mutts nuts and flattens to boss GT range ime, IMHO, ymmv etc etc Horses for courses this game I guess.

1974 Fender Jazz on Ebay - not quite as it should be!
gafbass02 replied to Gunsfreddy2003's topic in Bass Guitars
I think it's just gorgeous, I've only ever been into 70's style jazz's. It's the blocks n binding plus big logo does it for me. Sadly I'll never ever ever own an original. -

I'd love to know more on what's up with it? My eye for detail is shocking. -
Not in the Least. It's a lush bass and I'm very jealous! I never snag a bargain, let alone enough to build a whole bass (that works!)

I quite often put my backline off to the side facing me, works great. Except for the time we were on tour with Dokken and they were using our backline. Don Dokken stomping around backstage: "Who's idea was it to put the bass amp at the side of the stage?! It was crushing my skull!" (it was a trace AH400smx stack on like two.) (I fessed up, ha calmed down, their drummer found it hilarious and insisted he be ignored at every opportunity lol)

I should add that I left retail to earn a tiny pittance working in schools, helping children, so I could go home everyday feeling like I'd made a good difference in the world, instead of being paid to lie and make someone else very rich. Not to mention be treated like an animal along the way. I should also add that it wasnt just plain old retail, not even music, it was much, much worse... Hi-Fi. And the big difference in the way I treated customers after I'd 'given up' Was that I simply waited for them to come to me and then told them the truth about what they wanted quickly and efficiently. Didn't bother trying swap or upsell etc. Less stress and less money for me. Love my job now though. I get hit and threatened less too. But you can bet I'm patient with sales assistants, even when they are being a pain.
