Most of my gigs are backline only. For the others, if the bass in coming from front of house I just can't see the point in sending a signal that has been specifically sculpted for a particular speaker cabinet for on stage monitoring to a sound desk for the completely different response from the pa system. By all means get the sound man to hear your rig and tell him you want it sounding like that but insist on throwing, for example, a bass heavy signal or a scooped one to the sound desk and expect him to get a clear and punchy sound from his pa is, frankly, unfair. There's nothing magical about the tone controls on your bass amp and they will be rudimentary compared to the eq on a decent desk. You won't be getting the sound you think you will. Maybe all musicians should spend a bit of time mixing in their training. And talking.
Win.

Epic tune.

Custom made bass. Per string..

As above. For an average of less than a tenner per band what kind of godlike genius engineer is expected? PA systems sound nothing like Bergantino cabs and separate EQ is often essential. Fact of life.

Pre for someone I don't know. I personally use post, but is my PA and I'm the engineer and I want to use the Ampeg EQ. It's suits my cab onstage and I can still tweak it enough to suit the FOH.

I'm feeling a bit smug about this topic as our new and very experienced drummer uses an electronic kit. I'm not convinced about the cymbal samples but the rest of it sounds excellent. We can tune and select kits that suit the song, which adds a lot to your tonal palette. We also rehearse set up exactly as we would at a gig, so we can focus lights and perfect monitor mixes and this is paying rich dividends now as what we get at gigs is exactly what we are prepared for. Even to the extent that our cable runs and guitar stands are all carefully considered. Sounds anal, but it bloody works. As to guitarists playing too loudly, last night at the gig ours said it was the first time he was louder in the monitor wedge than in his combo and he loved it as he always hated being too loud, but felt he had to be to achieve that stage presence he thought essential. As a bonus, all our amps are working less and there is loads of headroom in the system as a whole which for me equates to quality. For those who have to play with a loud drummer or guitarist who wont listen when you ask them to be reasonable, sack them and get someone with a brain as well as a van. Harsh, but they're your ears and livelihood.

Two gigs, first with the new drummer. First Frid Chevys pub Warrington. Singer was an hour and a half late, neatly avoiding any load out duties and no reason offered. The pub itself has a great large stage, but its electrics are dangerously bad. We lost a horn diaphragm in the drum wedge and possibly burned out a small mini mixer also for the drummer, when a spike came through. Other problems continued through the night with spikes and crackles on various mixer channels, causing a flurry of cable and input changing to no avail. My Ampeg amp stopped working for the first time in a year of hard use and I had to sit out a whole song.. During the break the landlord offered to turn off a mountain of dj equipment in the booth which he said "always causes problems for the bands.." Cheers for letting us know promptly.. He's got a sparks booked in to sort it next week,apparently.. Second gig at Cabin 5150 in Macclesfield. Lovely top floor wood roof and brick walls gig, decent stage, decent PA. Unfortunately it's run by enthusiastic owners who don't know what they are doing. The digital o2r desk proved difficult for the operator, and I didn't notice any EQing in evidence. The sound man/owner expressed disapproval of our use of backing tracks and when halfway through the first set a loud buzz was heard in the monitors he turned the backing track chan off and went back to his cig downstairs and outside. Leaving us backing track less till he came back and I got off stage approached him and expressed my earnest desire that he turn it back on. Not enjoyable, with a sense of dislocation throughout and a feeling of slight sneering in the air. We won't be back. Learned a lot and will put into effect for the next gig on Frid.

Hi Walker. Seems to me that what you want to do isn't practical. IE using an aux to monitor FOH. As EBS states you could simply monitor from the headphones out which would give you some idea as to the mix, but would be completely out regardingEQ and FX as your phones will be totally different to FOH, and Reverbs etc always sound much louder in headphones than they do in a room. As to watching for things dropping out, you would notice that on a dedicated aux mix also so long as the line you were watching wasn't mixed too low to start with and if all you are really concerned with is your keys players inability to turn down after solos, perhaps some form of level adjustment (smack across the head) might be preferable?
I don't buy the notion that buying British makes you some kind of nazi. Way to go in hijacking a celebration of British endeavor for your own suspect motives.
Sorry Billy, I don't equate national pride with nazism. Why do you? For instance, when we made ships here, we knew we were better at it than anyone anywhere and said so. Didn't make us Nazis. What suspect motives? All I meant was personally,I'll go for quality and price, and if that means Japanese basses, Chinese mixers and American mics, so be it. I have no national allegiance to the UK,just wanted to see if the "Made in the UK" really meant anything anymore other than some kind of kitsch value. I appreciate the taxes and wages thing, but its really just a drop in the ocean compared to PRC imports isn't it?

Behringer is crap! - is it? do we give labels too much weight?

OK, perceived quality and craftsmanship. British pay packets. The feeling that the UK and EU shouldn't completely lose its manufacturing base to the PRC et al. Personally, I'm not convinced by those arguments. Quality from a cottage or custom industry you can communicate with I understand. But surely that's only ever going to be a small percentage of what you buy? Those Brit wages will be spent on almost completely non UK manufactured goods. Maybe some UK food. Retaining some independent manufacturing base is a nice idea, but doesn't really make sense other than if you fear a war with the PRC or are sentimental about the EU. So, I'm concluding that buying British is a sentimental thing, associated with better times and a sense of pride and national superiority.

Aha but he may have "improved"it by sticking a Wilkinsons pickup in. Just sayin. -
Cliff Gallup still keeps me interested , since I was 15 That was quite depressing though wasn't it? Less than ten years after his best hits.
-
Ok, but so far the only argument I can think of to buy something "manufactured" in the UK is that the wages go to UK workers. Any other benefits?

Well then,my apologies. But it's my thread so I kind of thought it was aimed at me. And I pro deserved it anyway

But as far as Im aware that money doesn't stay in our economy, it goes via the caymans isles to somewhere that allows companies to pay even less tax than they do here. I honestly think buying "british" whatever that really means anymore and thus putting money into the british economy, is a fallacy. Some companies may be based in Britain, and employ Brits, and they may even source their parts in Britain (doubtful) but they certainly don't keep their money here. Alternatively, what's the difference with say a Honda car made in Sunderland by British workers who's pay packet gets spent in Britain? I honestly don't see the difference anymore with most components being internationally sourced and most profits being deposited outside the country. Anyone with a more convincing argument?
-
Can I just ask someone to explain why an all British setup would be in some way preferable to one with foreign components?

£500 minimum, average is £700 You really want to come home with at least £100 each and have all the fuel and food costs paid. Two sets of 45 min, maybe 3 encores if asked for.
