How does your drummer keep the volume down?
Monckyman replied to mrtcat's topic in General Discussion
What worked for me was sticking our drummer on In ear monitors. A simple feed from an aux to a small Spirit folio 4 chan desk and earbuds of his choice,(currently Shure E2cs off ebay). Because he hears his kit a little louder than usual, he backs off. He can also hear us! MM -
Thanks for replies all. There were two hotels at that location, both had cctv which is good, but neither would let us access any recordings at the time. They insisted we wait until normal working hours,(Monday). I`m not sure at this point whether any of it has been made available to the police yet. Same with police, who couldn`t be arsed coming out and the TM had to go to them. Hopefully some of it will surface at some point. There is a few weeks till the next full show, so replacement kit can be found, but some acoustic shows next week in Greece may be cancelled.

Hello all. On Sat night/Sun morning 2/3rd June ,after the first gig of the season at the Robin in Bilston thieves broke into our hired van at The Holiday Inn express,Walsall and stole quite a lot of kit. This wasn`t discovered until 11a.m Sunday morn. They had crowbarred a corner of the side loading door back and exposed the panel covering an electrical junction box that controls the central locking.. They also, for some reason, stuck a screwdriver or knife into one of the tyres. The list is extensive and is as follows: New Model Army equipment stolen from a van in The Holiday Inn Express car park, Walsall 3rd June 2012. Police crime number 20WS/91324T/12 (Walsall Police Station 0345 1135000) Gibson Les Paul Custom – red (serial number 2051429) Gibson Les Paul – black (serial number 90362428) Epiphone Riviera – red with tremelo arm (serial number R97C0572) Lowden 025 acoustic guitar with pick-up (serial number 5131) Lowden 025 acoustic guitar with pick-up (serial number 12288) Gibson SG – black (serial number 8176566) Fender Precision bass – black(the new bassist just bought this so I`m not sure of the details but I`m fairly sure it was a US made standard.) All these items were in new or nearly new Hiscox guitar cases Evolution Keyboard (serial number MK361C – 222941) Ampeg SVT 3 amplifier head Fender Blues Master guitar combo (serial number B-181446) Custom built pedalboard containing three way control unit for Blackstar combo amplifier, 2 x Boss digital delays, tremelo and tuner pedals and a Cry-baby wah pedal Boss pedalboard containing Boss digital delay, bass overdrive, chorus, compression, and tuner pedals Gator 2U case containing AKG guitar radio receiver (serial number AK3254-001272) All these items were in new or nearly new cases Heavy multi-guitar rack Flight case containing tools for guitar repairs Bag containing microphone stands/drum loom Bag containing guitar cables, looms, power supplies, plectrums, capos, two guitar radio transmitters If you have any information please call the Police Station above or email us at Luckily for us the gig we had on Sunday at Strummercamp was made possible by frantic driving around Manchester by myself and generous loans of equipment by members of Goldblade and Neck who were on the bill also. A big thank you to all in those bands. Please get in touch with me here or call the numbers provided if you hear anything about any of this stuff, you never know. Thanks. MM

shrug. Your call, but your "tone" can`t be decided by you, until you learn how amplifying it through a very much larger system than your backline changes it completely. And you`ll also need to take responsibility for properly mixing it with the other instruments in your band. Remember them? Otherwise if your needs are so specific that the majority of those trusted to do the job cannot, you might consider paying someone to pay specific attention to your [s]ego.[/s] requirements. (smiley to indicate there is humour present, albeit minor)

I like the BDI21 BUT, it has stopped accepting mains power, and is battery only.So I no longer use it. As to the modelling versus the DI sound, 99.9.9999.9 sound engineers will prefer the unadorned sound of the DI. Not because ,as the bitter bassist of the previous page suggested, "so they can completely ignore your wishes" regarding tone etc, but simply because having a modeller with an EQ tone that doesn`t suit the house P.A at all is not helpful to anyone. However, in your case where you are basically looking for a back up amp like device which can utilise your P.A rather than a DI as such, the BDI21 would be the cheapest and most versatile option.

Been using a PF500 into various cabs including Ampeg 410.Ampeg115,on their own and together,Ampeg 410hlf and an Ashdown mini48. I`ve used all but the HLF on large roomed wedding gigs and they all sound sweet with the PF and the Ashdown scoring suprisingly high when on a tilt back stand. I think it`s a little too easy to load the sound with too much low end, which can muddy up your sound, but if you resist the urge you get a very pokey and firm sound that works with fingers and pick.

No.
For me this was the intresting part of the thread. This is exellent bass, i'm gonna check Alberto Rigoni out for more... I'm surprised there weren't more comments on the piece. Nice Butterfly Bass, but that's about it!
Quite possibly the worst 20 seconds of audio visual media I`ve seen for a few years. IMVHO

Horrendous bullsh*tt*ry of the fifth order of smugness.

Proper pissing probably prevents planning poor performance. Honest.

Ax cradle ax cradle right >stares balefully at PF500 sans handle.
I always carry a small towel. About half the size of a tea towel to wipe my hands and clean the strings. I feed it through the handle on the side of the cab & tie it round the bass neck. Works great, very secure & no need to carry a stand.
Win, on the grounds that it`s totally Adamsian and I approve.

I take twice as much as I think I need. And i think I need a lot. My band members complain about all the cables etc I make us carry, so much so that I`m now following the D Vader plan and have thinned out the main cables case into a spares bag that just lives in the van. None of those cables are for kettles though. I also have a small tool bag which lives under the mixing desk in a rack drawer, and came in damn handy when the drummer snapped a pedal spring a couple of weeks back. Of course, he had NO tools at all. A spare spring yes(wow) but couldn`t change it without my tools. This is with a full PA but when I just played bass I still took two of everything except amp and cab and took a BDDI in case the amp went down.

This is a spoof. Right? -
AKG,Samson and Trantec do very reasonable units and tend to go for app £50 ish second hand if you just want to try it out. Or, this AT unit is great value. Firstly, the Forum is a difficult place to mix, it`s domed roof causing no end of difficulties. The crew that work there is made up of a lot of ex Astoria crew, who know what they are about. Secondly, any house engineer would not be responsible for most touring acts sound, they would bring their own man. Thirdly, £ rules Fourthly, it doesn`t stink of piss and gay sex like the Astoria.

Funny things you've heard at a gig/soundcheck?
Monckyman replied to krispn's topic in General Discussion
Lazy drummers are a constant pita for me. Some singers are the same. "saving" their vocals for the gig. With the result that everyone else begs for the lead vox down in their monitors in the first song. My favourite soundcheck quote remains, Singer " f*** me, that snare`s well too loud, turn it down!" Me "I can`t turn it down, I haven`t even got a Mic on it" Singer " Well put a f***ing Mic on it, and THEN turn it down!" -
Cheap example of a cheap but good cab

Ongoing saga of in ear monitors!!

If it`s a dual jack/xlr input just use a balanced xlr from your desk out. Should eliminate any chance of unbalanced wierdness. Good luck -
Well,I`m a bit shocked at some attitudes here. Maybe as an engineer I`m a little more concerned with the "show" as a whole, and to me that means a decent way of presenting it. If you play bars and small pubs, and a vocal P.A is the most you ever need, then I can see the point for having it owned by the singer, much as you may spend a grand on bass and rig. If however, you play weddings and functions, you do, in my opinion need a bigger, full range P.A with enough clout and inputs to properly mix a full band. As has been posted previously, perhaps this is a one man business where he buys the gear, and hires you as part of that "gear", and so takes more from the shows to pay his overheads and running costs. Fine. But if you all run the business as a band, then you all should contribute to all the bills, and in my view, the ability to consistently deliver a quality sound is an essential part of that. Let me tell you my recent scenario. I joined my present wedding/party band in December 11. They had some very nice active JBL 500watt tops and a pair of Mackie active 500 watt subs, together with stands, mics, and a mackie mixing desk. It sounded great, I accepted the position pertly because of the P.A. Seriously, I knew it was important. The drummer in the band was seriously ill however, and we auditioned a new drummer in January, and started to work the set up. Fast forward to March. Singer,"Drummers been on the phone, and says as he`s not earning coz he`s ill, he want us to pay rental on HIS P.A..." Cue peals of thunder and thoughts of WTF? Yes, the previous drummer owned ALL of the P.A and after I refused to pay his asking price of £100 a gig, demanded it back. Since then I`ve been running around like a twat trying to rebuild something that can handle weddings in stately home venues with audiences of app 300 with a band grumbling about their earnings being spent on equipment. I think I`ve just about got it done, although the sub amp blew up last week and I don`t have a replacement yet... So, sore topic with me. If you want to play small bars and pubs, a vocal P.A will do it (in a mediocre way) but weddings and functions need a lot more, and it`s a band tool. Not just the singers. MM

Behringer is about to take over the globe. mark me words....

Ideally you need a frequency conscious compressor strapped across her mic, so that those shrill notes get pulled a little, but you can do a lot with a cheap DBX 266 or whatever. Most fem vocals sound great in one part of their register, but get a little "icepick in the eye" when they go for the higher parts. For me, a good old SM58 with whatever mid/high mid EQ you have on your desk tweaked down a bit should do it,and a compressor set to only compress her loudest parts would get you 90% there.

Ongoing saga of in ear monitors!!
Monckyman replied to Gunsfreddy2003's topic in Accessories and Misc
They should sound better yes, but it`s all relative. I`m really quite happy using £40 sennheisers for drummers on IEMs so long as the mould they sit in is good. I can only really say what I said in the other thread about IEMs and quality, which is if the ATs sound good, then use them. Try not to get sucked into the £100 more gets you x10 the quality, because it often doesn`t. Re: your other thread about balanced to unbalanced xlr to 1/4 jack, have a look at the manual and check if the input on your transmitter IS balanced, because it matters and bottom end is where it matters most. I`ve been where you are now, running around in circles trying to pin a problem down, but my advice is get the input sorted properly, before you worry about the phones. MM
