Di sound tips. How to help the sound man?
Monckyman replied to BassInMyFace's topic in EUB and Double Bass
I know it doesn’t help, but I saw Little Feat at the Shepherds Bush Empire and they had the worse sound and balance that I’ve ever heard. Bad FOH can happen at every level. Do you know what the audience was hearing when your “bad” recording was made? If they were getting a good mix then you were ok inspite of the bad recording. Unless the sound engineer has a very expensive system, recording off the desk is never going to be "studio quality" and it will sound different to the FOH mix. That's not what most FOH systems are designed to do, so the engineer might [s]not have recording studio type facilities and eq[/s] be struggling to work on a behringer prototype only produced in Mongolia in the late 80s by Yurt dwelling Nomads. But if he’s doing his job properly his [s]main[/s] only concern will be getting a good sound and balance “out front” and not “doing a free recording for the band that will only be used later to denigrate his mixing abilities on a bass forum somewhere”. I always use sound desk recordings for reference purposes only, ie dynamics of the band, checking arrangements, timing, tuning etc, but as you say, at the end of the day if you play at semi pro gigs with semi pro engineers you do have a lottery. Part of the learning process is to rise above it all and know that you've given a good performance inspite of everything else that was going wrong.
Very much this, and I fixed a few spelling mistakes. The amount of times bands have come to me and said, "hey, this recording`s got no guitar on! it`s all drums and vocals you f***ing moron" Whereupon I try to explain the two marshal stacks and trace elliot rig going full pelt didn`t feature much in the PA mix and consequently (and it`s here they struggle to understand), they didn`t end up on the recording.. If you must record yourself, take a recorder with a stereo mic and set it up near the sound man. Back to the original question, the ONE thing you can do to help the sound man is have all your gear working and organised so your precious allotment of time for a soundcheck is spent checking your sound and not wiring up pedals/tuning/borrowing a strap/having a piss. Truly. Bribes may also help. MM -
Hi Chris, a bit of hiss is normal for most units in this price range. Right.. Hmm! Have you tried changing the frequency? Sometimes the one you`re on just isn`t happy. Have you scanned for the best freq? Good to try it with the wired setup, then if it all sounds fine, you know it`s the wireless aspect. Also, and again you prob already did this, but try a new battery! Overall, my hunch is it`s the frequency, and your transmission is being blocked by something near it in the freq range. Good luck!

New Dirty Loops Cover - Rollin' In The Deep
Monckyman replied to AndyBob09's topic in General Discussion
I would be reaching for a razor if I had to engineer this lot. Virtuoso playing flawlessly delivered for that perfect B&Q soundtrack. What exactly is the point? Did I mention how smug they looked? Well they do. -
Hiya Walker. sorry you`re having a mare with this stuff. I`m just scanning the pdf for this system and the only thing I can see is that the mic/jack inputs are the combi type, and they share a gain control on the input. Have you tweaked this at all? When you play a bass directly inserted, what are the level led lights doing? From your description it sounds almost like you are overloading the input and that`s causing distortion. You probably have done so already but, just for luck, turn the input control knob ALL the way down. now get your bass plugged in and slowly turn it up and see what difference in level you get. From the manual "Audio Inputs and Outputs The INPUT knobs control both MIC and LINE level signals. As a general guide-line, set the knob to the left of twelve o’clock for line level signals, and to the right of twelve o’clock for microphone levels. Observe the signal/clip LEDs. If they are consistently red, decrease the levelwith the corresponding INPUT knob. NOTE: If the level is decreased all the way and the LED remains red, the level of the input from the previous device in the audio chain (mixer, click track, digital sequencer, etc.) is too high and should be decreased." Also, have you tried BOTH left and right inputs? The fact that your mic input works cleanly suggests the unit isn`t broken, at least that bit isn`t but you just may have got one with a fault on the line input side. Try the level thing and get back to us here. Good luck Dave.

I bet they don`t actually fit any kettles as they are not designed to but hey..we can`t all be pedants

Depressing things your bandmates say.

"oh.... aargh.. I changed my mind,I love it really. ooooh" actual text from keyboard owner a day after she resigned ,to much relief.(ours). We stood firm and are pressing ahead without her. -
Truck, that`s good to know your drivers are ok, but what circuit board are you talking about? Is there a crossover in there? Also, your PF has 2 speaker outs, one on 2/4" Jack and one on NL2 spekon. Doesn`t matter whether you daisy chain both together or use a cable to each from the amp, the ohms will remain the same. Personally, I like two individual cables from the amp, because if the one feed cable goes, then both cabs don`t go down. Happy days. MM

The OP hit a nerve that keeps grumbling from under on here. Namely, given that a total (in most of your opinions, incompetent) stranger is in charge of how your bass sounds, what exactly are you spending all that cash on? A vain hope that quality will triumph in the face of deaf old hippys? The knowledge that your onstage sound is exactly right? Personally, I think it`s both of those added to some denial about the whole process. I like nice amps also, but I reckon for the work I`m doing now, most of the time I could turn up with any old sh*t and so long as I could hear it all would be fine. You spends yer money.....

As above. Remove the driver from the cab, and test directly from the batt to the speaker terminals (with a bit of gash cable). The cone should give a slight bump and move a little when you dab the positive terminal with the cable. No movement means A/your coil is fried and is solid, and won`t allow movement(you can test this also by laying the speaker magnet down on a table and gently pressing with both hands to check for smooth movement. Any friction is a bad thing!) B/your leader cable (the really thin stuff that connects your cone to your terminals)has detached from the cone or terminal. This happened to me recently on a Tannoy Berkely studio monitor. I thought the cone was fritzed and I sent the bloody thing to Tannoy in Glasgow for a recone and they found the tired cable! Good luck!

Music as a force for social and political change.....
Monckyman replied to Bilbo's topic in General Discussion
Anyone interested in music and political comment in harmony can do a lot worse than New Model Armys last 4 recordings. This band in particular has maintained a fairly uncompromising stance regarding western militarism and the suppression of so called third world economies. BTW they declined to participate in Red Wedge at the time but have a strong affinity for Billy Braggs work. Back in pre 9/11 land they had already written fairly prescient songs called "Flying through the smoke" and "Here comes the War." Later themes concerned with the implosion of Wall street were gleefully documented in "Today is a good day". I personally think the most music can change is a haircut, maybe trouser leg size, possibly a girlfriend, but the sharing of information, points of view and a knowledge that there is a counter culture to be explored is plenty to be going on with imo. I have the bridge cover fitted. I like not getting bridge rash on my right hand. You can still palm mute, just a bit further up the strings. I tried the pickup cover for one gig. Nightmare. -

I can`t say what`s wrong with the ACS but if the ATs work for you, stick with them. You can always upgrade later as and when you decide.

Can you convert a car subwoofer and car amp into a bass rig?
Monckyman replied to stefBclef's topic in Amps and Cabs
You could power it from a few different devices, battery chargers, the Maplins converter (quietly!) or a modified PC power supply(google it) but the main problem is as posted above, no frequencies above whatever the sub stops at, I`d say app120Hz or lower. So you either need another cab or a love of Jah Wobble. It also won`t be very loud when taken out of a small car space and left quivering in the great expanse of your bedroom. However, I say give it a go! -
