In my experience recording can bring any musician low. It`s process of highlighting the smallest flaw and presenting it to everyone for criticism can be pretty disheartening and it applies to any muso, but especially singers! Don`t be disheartened though, it`s an experience everyone experiences at some point. You can improve your technique if you like, and practice in more demanding ways, but as the others above have stated, it`s more of a head thing, and allowing yourself to relax and enjoy the vibes, rather than striving to sound uber original and interesting all the time is definitely the answer. Good luck! MM

Thanks Gentlemen, all good information. MM

Lo all. I just finished sanding down a recently bought maple neck back to the bare wood and would like to know the best way to treat it. I see a few members use Danish oil on their necks, but what about protecting the fingerboard from wear? Suggestions invited, Ta. MM

When you have grown bored of pickups, necks pickguards and number of strings, colour seems quite a good way to choose a guitar.

Nice to see Paradise Lost in that list.
Velcro can be used too. (sticky back) and the plate the pickups are mounted to could be a piece of aluminium sheet - that way it'll bend to the fingerboard contour and effectively allow you to adjust the pickup height by bending... Might save you a lot of sanding/planing bits of ply!
Definitely this. Make an inverted "T" with the cross piece as wide as your Fingerboard, heavy duty velcro will keep it in place and is easy to remove if you need to work on it. Bend the crosspiece to the desired shape to match your board, and gently file the edges so you don`t cut yourself! I`d paint it black to make it less visible and use small sized nuts and bolts to fix the pick ups on, you can even use some foam between the pickups and the Ali to make the pickup heights adjustable. If you fix your socket to an "L shaped piece of Ali, you can screw rivet or glue that to the Vertical part so it`s hidden behind the fingerboard. MM

I bought a pickguard off Stevie on Thursday 23rd June, he accepted payment and said he would post early the following week. Not heard from him since.

Just bought an item off Fleabag and it couldn`t have gone smoother or quicker. He responded quickly to messages and posted the item faster than I expected. All in all a thoroughly reputable vendor! Thanks MM

Comfortable footwear on the shopping list then. Do you have to stand? What about a tall barstool? I get very sore feet after standing at a desk for 3 or 4 hours, but sitting doesn`t feel right, tends to make me relax too much and lose sharpness. The compromise is the tall stool you can semi lean/sit on so you are upright, but the weight`s off your feet. Glad it went well, I bet you start relaxing now and enjoy it all for a bit. MM

Free Mars bar? No way, that Mars bar was a payoff to suppress serious allegations of Bass hacking on a gargantuan scale concerning bass supremos like Jeff Berlin(may peace be upon him) and the distribution of his highly prized Limited Edition Swimwear. Rumours of Nick Beggs modelling the above are circulating. Anyway shtum, or the mods will lock the thread.

Well, what happened?

Never mind man, you weren`t happy for whatever reason so what`s the point if it`s not fetching a few quid in? You know you are always going to have to ration your gig time carefully to avoid domestic strife so this was a good decision. I reckon players in originals bands sometimes think that as it`s their songs, they can play them how they like, even if that`s considered to be "wrong" according to consensus and it does sound like Quality Control was set a little low here. One door closes, another opens... MM p.s what`s happening with the rusty Hondo?

It is Jimmy Goodwin with the upside down P.Just the way he learned. He can play guitar the same way. I`m another lefthander playing right handed basses, simply because I was unaware of the choice when I started playing. I don`t think it matters. Like the Pianists or drummers, you train your hands to do what you want and are essentially ambidextrous when playing an instrument. I came from a school that forced me to write with my right hand, (for my own good apparently) until my left handed mother took umbrage and bollocked them. I`m very comfortable playing right handed and it feels very natural, and allows me to noodle on lots of other instruments without problems. One thing I still have a problem with is peeling spuds... I peel right handed and cut the spuds with a knife in my left hand.. Good to know it`s fairly common. MM

Hi I do a lot of work for a P.A company called Noisebox based in Central Manchester and I can highly reccommend them for all sizes of P.A. They also share a unit with a backline company called Big Fish who can supply any and all levels of backline.
