Why were you so adamant about not learning to read? If you enjoyed playing the piano, why wouldn't you not want to get the most out of it? Learning to read will not affect your instinctive feel, unless you let it. In which case it could be argued that there was little feel to begin with. No idea, I was a child. Maybe I thought they were trying to change something I thought was mine alone? This isn`t after all a rational thing, it`s emotional. -
Thanks for that Bill, I`m starting to realize that guitar amps useage can be a lot different than power amp useage. Then again, with statements like " Do not drive the amplifier into clipping, Clipping sounds something like a stylus mistracking. and generally occurs on loud passages when the system is played at loud volume levels. If clipping occurs regularly, turn down the volume level or install a larger amplifier that can deliver the required power without distortion. " From documents like that and you can see why it`s easy to confuse the issue. MM

Guitarists who don't know what they are playing

I`ve met a few classical musicians who couldn`t jam a note and get all upset and insecure when you ask them to. I also met a lot of excellent musicians who "know" what they are doing without having a clue why. When I was a child my grandfather tought me piano, which included reading. I hated it and avoided lessons when I could, although I loved playing the piano. Later at college they tried re-teaching me to read rather than using the ears I had relied on for years and it was a real struggle. So much so that I didn`t complete that module. I do believe there is a long dark teatime of the soul when learning the dots after relying on ears and this seems to knock your instinctive feel out of kilter. One theory I heard was to do with memory, either visual or aural, and that the visual memory part of the brain was larger and better served, so learning to "see" a visual representation of what you were hearing, helped with retention and understanding. I`m with the "Badger Chewers" though. -
Thanks for the replies all, especially Fonzoroo, and Jennifer. It`s fantastic being able to call on your experience here. Could you elaborate on the "Budget" fit, and what exactly that would entail? I reckon the cheapest/most elegant solution to the endpin is a retap and larger screw. I don`t fancy trying to hoik that thing out of there. I do fancy having a go at the bridge myself, I have woodworking tools and some DIY experience, but then again.... There is a Luthier who has been recommended to me by another DBer locally, I`ll get a quote and go from there.

Thanks for the reply,Lemmy. What I meant by " a lot of luv" was respect.I didn`t intend to imply any sucking up. I agree with the expert thing also,Alex is clearly well qualified in his area. I just thought at the time the way he replied was a little condescending. Once again I apologise for any offence given to anybody, I`m quite an opinionated 47 year old and don`t really have enough patience for forum arguments. I`ll have to look at the clipping thing again, maybe it`s my P.A background, but it makes me uncomfortable thinking about it. More research needed by me. MM

OK Alex, thank you for your reply, it was very enlightening and provides food for thought. MM

Right, I had to delete my first reply to lemmy, and chill a bit. Please don`t be telling me to "pipe down" have a little respect this way eh? New or not I have an opinion, it`s a forum for exchanging those, and I gave mine. If you think I have said anything the mods may take umbrage at, then notify one and put it to them. Thank you, MM

OK guys enough, if the mad proff gets a lot of luv round here thats ok, but there`s no need for him to make what I thought was a quite rude statement. Clipping amps is not recommended by anyone I know in the industry, not P.A amps, not guitar amps, not bass amps. OVERDRIVING them is different, that`s pe-amp stuff, not OUTPUT amp. If the barefaced stuff is different then ok,happy days and i want one. But no need for the complete "you may not actually have a brain so I`ll try to explain in monosyllables" stuff I got from him. right. Done. Have a nice day

Headphones - are better ones any better?
Monckyman replied to niceguyhomer's topic in Accessories and Misc
Also depends on what they are "better" at. Some are flatter so better for studio monitoring, some have better isolation so better for live work. I use Sennheiser HD280s £100 gets you a decent pair.Try Beyer. -
What was the gear that you thought was poo, at the time...

Had a Davoli mixer with a built in tape echo, you said "One" into your (realistic) mic and it went "wub wub wub wub" Also had a Vox continental, no idea where that eventually went, just sort of dissapeared. Swapped a Sequential ciruits Pro one, a Roland SH101 and a Roland MC202 for a half decent stereo....Just before Vince Clark made them all collectable.. bastard. -
Sorry, I wasn`t responding to the last post, that made a lot of sense. I was referring to Alexclabers superior declamation.

Hi, I`ve used a few different iem systems by shure and sennheiser but not this range. Looking at the spec I can`t see any reason why it won`t be as good sonically as the more expensive sets, but it may not cope with larger venues where multiple radio systems are in use. You can of course use whatever earbuds you like, and can indeed get specialist moulds to fit a range of them. One company that specialises in such is Handheld Audio

Jennifer, that bridge looks really well fitted. did you use your old bridge as a template?

Thanks for the replies all, am currently scouring the tintanet for images of Framus basses. I`ll admit it does look more like the Rhthym model than anything else I`ve seen, but i`m yet to find any definitive pics. The Framus site ones are too poor to see any details. Anyone with a framus post your pics here please! MM

Hah! > Just been baffled by bullsh*te. Ok as you like.

The front, one more time in better light. DM
-
Thanks gentlemen for your time and interest, here are some more photos. The front does look like a different wood grain and finish to the sides and back. The neck looks like Rosewood, but then painted. This damage near the spike suggests inlaid rather than painted stripes. I hope the tuning pegs pics were what you wanted to see. Wasn`t sure if it was the plate or the tuner shape. Dave.
No, they won't give a damn. Read the link I posted earlier. If clipping was so bad how would we amplify guitars and synths without forever blowing drivers?
From Martin Audio`s own website: "Care should be taken to avoid amplifier clipping. It is important to understand that a low power amplifier driven into clipping is more likely to damage a loudspeaker than a higher power amplifier used within its ratings. This is because music signals have a high peak-to-average "crest" factor. When an amplifier is severely overdriven, its output waveform is clipped (its peaks are squared off) – reducing the crest factor. In extreme cases, the waveform can approach that of a square wave. An amplifier is normally capable of producing far more power under these conditions than its undistorted rated power output. The use of very high power amplifiers with outputs greater than those recommended is discouraged." I reckon they know what they are doing. MM

<Ulp> nut files?? I noticed the E came in at 115! Kinell I could tow me car with that! Think I`ve got a rusty bastard file in the back, t`will have to do

I just found a Polish site with a chap taking one out of a Marshall B150 and saying it`s 200 at 8ohm, whether that was original or not is also up for debate. No matter, I reckon I have my answer and it sounds pretty good.I`m not precious about it. I may swap out my ampeg though and see if that suits the amp better. thanks all.
