1. Went to see Benn play at the Manchester 235 Casino on Saturday night. What a fantastic band, and a great choice of songs. Funky as hell. Benn's a great bassist, rock solid and lots of groovy little lines thrown in for good measure. His Ken Smith bass had a tone to die for.....and I still can't believe I did my best to talk him out of selling an instrument I would really have loved to buy! If you get the chance, check him out. All the best Benn, Pete.
2. Our drummer's fantastic. He's a really good jazz drummer, so playing covers in a functions band is easy for him. He very rarely overplays anything, and his timing is spot on 99.9% of the time. Only once have I criticised his timing (in a rehearsal where both the guitarist and myself were adamant he'd slowed down). Caused a big row, and me to pack down and go home! Plus, he's a great guy and more like a brother.
3.
MB1. The Shahndar is rather good too!....No Rubber Chickens there!
My regular has been the Lal Qila. Started going in there when it first opened and was very sparsely decorated (and it was only 1 shop width - before they bought the place next door and knocked through). They do a luuuuuurvely Chicken Karahi
4.
This used to be mine and is a great example of lakland quality at a bargain price. Paul is a great guy to deal with too, have a bump on me mate cheers steve
I knew I'd seen it somewhere else That's a great price. Good luck with the sale.
5. If you like a bit of "fusion", the drummer in my band's doing a set at Matt & Phred's jazz club. Four piece outfit......sax, guitar, bass, drums. Saw them on Weds night and really enjoyed it. A bit of Billy Cobham, some Chick Corea, etc.
6.
Is it just me who thinks it looks tacky?
Nope. I think it looks horrendous.
7. Joe Hubbard used to play live with him. Saw him many, many years ago at The Apollo in Manchester. Great bassist. I think he's into teaching unarmed combat or something now! Now that's a career change.
8.
Welease wodger!
Surely it's Woderwick..... Is it not "Wodger, welease Woderwick"? Besides that, howdy doody Spartacus.
9. There's being influenced, and then there's blatant rip-off. Nuff said.
10.
....be prepared to whore yourself to anyone
Love it
11.
Why not do both? In lots of places the originals and pub covers bands are completely different venues/scene. Gte a pub covers going while you spend more time on the originals - then if the originals comes to nothing like it often does you still have the covers.
+1,000,000 I was lucky. I'd been out of a regular band for about 10 years, then I looked in the classifieds and spotted an ad that suited me perfectly. That's the band I'm in now after 3 years. We've now just found a keyboard player after months and months of searching. It took time, but we found the right one. So find yourself a covers band to get you gigging and get you the "love of playing" back, and then advertise for like minded musicians for your original stuff at the same time. That way, hopefully the covers band will keep you busy enough to allow you to be choosy with finding the other guys for the originals. Don't EVER, EVER give up.
12. Such a refreshing change from the endless slapping/tapping/noodling seen on electrics on YouTube. Very subtle and tasteful.
13. That sounds great. When you get going and get a gig list, be sure to post it on here. I for one would love to bob along. "And the lamb, lies down.....on Broadway...."
14.
PS- pete nice pic of your Bona!!!
Yes, fine and upstanding he is too In fact, it was an honour. The guy is such an inspiration, it's unbelievable. I must call round with them screws for the Multicomp at some point
15. Alright Kevin, Here's hoping you stick at it. You've started in a great place to learn stuff if you're on Dave's site. And there's loads to learn from lots of guys on here too. Cheers, Pete.
16. Alright Grumble. Just down the road from you in North Manchester, although our singer lives in Little Lever so I do have an almost "2nd cousin twice removed" type of claim on Bolton. Don't worry about the amount of time you been playing the bass, it's how much time in front of you that you've got to play the bass. I've been playing 30 years, and hopefully I've got at least the same again in front of me, so there's plenty of time for improvement. Cheers, Pete.
17. I owned a JO5 and it was a fantastic sounding 5 string Jazz, simple as that. I only got rid as I got a Musicman Stingray as part of a swap which suits my current needs more, and I already had another 5 string. Plus, if you're on about the sunburst one, that looks lovely......go for it.
18. It's a shame to have to sell a bass like that, but if I had whatever cash, I'd snap your hand off.
19. I haven't, but they pop up on here for sale now and again.
20. A friend of mine used to use something similar to this. http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=31136
21.
He's like the God father of bass. You dont know of him personally, but your role models might do, and their role models definately do! Chuck Rainey, Willie Weeks, Anthony Jackson, Marcus Miller, Jaco, Stanley, Bootsy all saw him as a massive influenance!
Exactly, I just can't understand why anyone who's influenced by any of the above (and many more for that matter) can't be influenced by Jamerson. I'd be interested to know who Jamerson's greatest influences were. Anyone know without me doing research?
22. Downloading it from Amazon now. Sounds great.
