1.
Edit: and while you're at work (or whatever) in front of a PC - http://www.practicesightreading.com/
Cheers for that link. Cracking idea.
See, I told you to learn to read.... In my experience. reading ability is a braod church.
Ooops. But yeah, absolutely smack on. I used to play violin when I was a child and was the leader of the South Manchester Youth Orchestra. But when I took to the bass instead, I stopped reading music. I'm in my early 40s now and am putting in a concerted effort to read, and you're right, the basics are coming back to me much quicker than I thought. I currently play in a band with a trained jazz drummer and a classically trained keyboard player, and they have really spurred me on. So in a nutshell, it really is about me putting in the graft.
2. I'm no octopus, so don't think I'll bother.
3.
...his playing itself is merely pretty damn good as opposed to exceptional
It depends what you are looking for when you use the term "exceptional". I didn't discovered Jamerson til I was in my 20s through a guitarist friend of mine lending me a copy of "Standing In The Shadows Of Motown" (it had tapes with it, not CDs!). Of course, prior to this I'd heard lots of Motown stuff, but never really paid that much attention to it. Just reading through the stuff in that book made me sit up and take notice. Sure, there are probably an awful lot more technically gifted players these days, but his bass lines were sweetly crafted (in certain numbers) melodies in their own right. Just listen to Darling Dear by the Jackson 5. Apart from the first few opening bars, none of them are the same throughout the rest of the song. It's a fantastic bassline, a great melody, and accompanies the rest of the arrangement perfectly. How many bass lines are written these days (and we're talking in terms of Motown being its day's equivalent of today's pop/soul/r&b stuff), with so much craft? And remember that he played with his index finger. Even his own son has admitted that he has trouble playing some of his father's basslines with two fingers, let alone one.
4. Nice. Reminds me of Percy Jones' bass on Brand X "Products".
5. Yeah, nice that. You're right though......you do need a new camera
6. Not many YouTube vids close on 10 mins that I'll sit through, but that was heavenly.
7. Alun, Just whacked it on my iPod. I think it's great. Well done that man. All the best, Pete.
8. Me. It'd have a ridiculously concave back to fit the shape of my gut!
9. That's really weird......I asked a mate of mine who also owns one if he'd ever suffered from hum, which he hasn't, so it was just me.....then lo and behold this appears! I have read the Talkbass one before, and wondered whether I'd be brave enough to have a stab at it......but thinking much the same, I know a friend that'd do a much better job than me. Great topic. Thanks very much for it.
10.
I think it's quite surprising that there isn't more vitriol aimed at Marcus Miller, given that he plays jazz, and is most well known for his slap style. Or maybe I just missed all the negative stuff on him?!
Well for me, Marcus is everything a lot of other slappers aren't. Soulful, heartfelt and knows what to do and when to do it.
11. Bloody hell Steve, a couple of weeks! A few months is a record for me.
12. If I remember correctly, yorks5stringer did the self build course, and came out with a lovely looking jazz. Yep......found it...... http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...=yorks5stringer
13.
I'm going to go with Andy Rourke.
Very good call. But ultimately for me....James Jamerson.
14. Got to admit, that is THE bass I always wanted. I have a black and maple precision because of THAT bass. Bruce was my original bass hero. However, that price is ridiculous. (Saying that.....if I won the lottery.....hmmmm!)
15. There's a couple on Sting's "Ten Summoners Tales". Seven Days has already been mentioned. Love Is Stronger Than Justice is another one (7/4) I think. Turn It On Again by Genesis is 13/8 but the bass line's not exactly demanding.
16. Just another one to give another big thumbs up for dealing with Stuart. You won't find a more honest guy on here. And if only that neck were maple I might be begging you for a swap deal
17.
Francis Dunnery
Good call
18.
Re. the 2nd Sharay Reed clip. I too can't get enough of it. It reminds me why I fell in love with bass in the first place and is exactly the kind of playing I aspire to.
Amen
19.
Is this still available? If so, any interest in a trade for this: Thumb NT 4 91' \Samuel
I have a sale pending at the moment. But should it fall through, I am only interested in a cash sale, no trades thanks.
20. I played a bit of guitar when I was younger, but due to me putting a bit of a band together with a mate (and him being a better guitarist than me), I decided to buy myself a bass and teach myself how to play it. I'd also had a fascination about the "guitar with only four pegs" since the mid 70s due to my sister's obsession with Alan Longmuir of the Bay City Rollers. So I bought a Kay Les Paul shaped bass out of my mum's Burlington catalogue with my paper round money, then phoned Sounds Great in Heald Green (they've got a lot to answer for on here!) to ask them what notes the strings should be tuned to. Then flew upstairs, tuned it, whacked my Jam records on and anything else I could find and attempted to play along to them. The rest is history.
21. That's a bloody good looking bass for that kind of money. Shame I've no cash.....and I also live the other end of the country
22. D.....R.....O.....O.....L   Sadly I do not have a receptacle to urinate in
23. Currently doing: You're The First, The Last, My Everything - Barry White December 1963 (Oh What A Night) - Frankie Vallie & the Four Seasons Boogie Wonderland - E.W.F. That's The Way I Like It - KC & The Sunshine Band You Can't Hurry Love - Phil Collins version, sadly Love Really Hurts Without You - Billy Ocean
24.
I know I'm just learning this bass line - but it ain't nothing like this from this 'expert' - unless I'm missing something?
Clearly not the original......don't know where the hell he's got that from......it's dreadful.
