1. I think Bilbo will know more about this than me, but I believe Artie Shaw gave up the clarinet to pursue a career as a writer, with limited success.
2.
Andy Fraser, he didn't even have to play to look cool. Effortless. See here, perhaps the greatest ever "cool" performance by a rock band imho Free - All Right Now - Isle of Wight Festival '70 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpLv4M4paSI
This.
3.
Led Zep 4 . But then again i think everyone knows every bit of the last song on side one 😀
Haha yes me too. Also on my list would be Brain Salad Surgery by E LP , Fire and Water by Free and Deja Vu by CSNY
4. I usually stay in Walton on Thames and get the train up from there. Looks like there is going to be engineering works which will make it impossible to get the overground from Clapham Junction to Olympia! Bugger. I'm now looking at perhaps staying in Richmond. Train from there to Wilseden Green and then overground. Just thought I would mention it in case anyone else is thinking of getting the overground from Clapham Junction.
5.
I wish you a hopeful Christmas I wish you a brave new year All anguish, pain and sadness Leave your heart and let your road be clear And I'll just leave the lyric there... have a great Christmas my fellow Basschatters! And a happy New Year!
+1. Happy Christmas one and all.
6. So glad I got to see them last year. Status Quo were such a huge part of my teenage years. Dancing to 'Down Down' at the local rowing club disco remains one of my happiest memories. Plus seeing Rick jamming incognito at a pub in Staines some time in the eighties. What a privelage to catch that.
7. And how the heck did that bass player from Freddie Bell and the Bell Boys manage to do all those dance moves whilst playing? It looked to me as though he really was playing, not miming. I googled them afterwards and discovered his name was Frankie Brent. What a performer!!
8. Sounds like a great idea, I wish you well with it. Alas I am too far away to throw my hat into the ring.
9. Very much hoping to get to this one, but can't really commit at this stage. My life is such a social whirl, lol :-)
10. How intruiging, I had no idea! When I started to learn bass in 2011, I just typed 'bass guitar forums' into google and BC was the first thing that came up. I thought I might learn a few things - and how right I was!
11. I usually try to talk to the bass player after a gig, just to say 'well done, wherr are you playing next' etc. I don't tend to ask if they're on BC and I never talk gear unless they do. I've always tried to go up to at least one band member and thank them if I've enjoyed the gig, from long before I ever picked up a bass myself. I was almost put off continuing to do this after a thread on here where several individuals professed to feeling awkward when punters talked to them, or finding it tiresome in one way or another. But eventually I thought 'sod it, life's too short, if I want to compliment someone I will' And hope that deep down inside they actually appreciate it in some way.
12. That is what I have always loved about Black Dog. So far behind the beat it's phenomenal Disclaimer: this opinion is from someone who may have had a few ales.
13. Well done on nailing Stay with Me. That one's on my bass playing bucket list. I've attempted to learn it, but it ain't easy is it? It's a brilliant song, and I would love to play it with an all girl band, and change the words to 'I know your name is Peter' Haha :-)
14.
Carole Kaye might be a bit miffed she's not at the epicentre of absolutely everything though.
Don't you start!
15. Brilliant! I fit the bill in every respect. :-) Although I think I'll avoid Harry Styles girlfriend. Or indeed Harry Styles. I honestly think it's a great ad though. :-)
16. Wot, no thread yet? Dates are announced. 4 and 5 March. :-)
17. Agree with Bubinga5 and Lefty. I was tempted to join in with the Boycott Black Friday movement, but I do actually have to buy quite a lot of groceries as I'm having a friend to stay for the weekend! :-) But other than that, I won't be buying anything.
18. 'Yer man Jaco' perhaps? Even in typing this, my phone tried to correct Jaco to Jacob. Maybe worth giving the chap a chance. Have you got a number you can ring him on? Perhaps he's better at verbal communication.
19. Amazon vouchers so I could buy more sheet music books. And a new gig bag.
20.
Echoes or One Of These Days for me.
And Fearless is another good un. Basically, we could just list every track on Meddle, lol. :-)
21. It would have to be Meddle or Ummagumma. Which to choose though? OK, let's plump for Meddle. And if I had to pick a track it would be 'One of These Days'
22. I always wear my lanyard. But in previous years I have noticed that some BCers are a bit shy. I've only discovered they were there when they post on the forum afterwards. That's bass players for you I guess😊
23. Cracking gig with the Stones covers band at our usual venue. Singer/band leader had decided he wanted us to do some of the lesser known album tracks. The rest of us had misgivings, but it turned out to be a great success. The venue is a very small music club in Brum. Packed out with friends, family and regular punters who know and love their music. I don't think we could have got away with it anywhere else, but this crowd really appreciated the unusual set list. I loved it. Got to play stuff that I probably won't have a chance to again. My favourite being Torn and Frayed off the Exile On Main St album. We had rehearsed for weeks, so I felt really confident. The atmosphere was fantastic, people dancing and cheering. Afterwards I got loads of compliments about my playing from several of the regulars who have been watching my progress since I first started going to jams there a couple of years ago. I felt really chuffed. I've been playing for five years now, but I still have to pinch myself sometimes to believe I am actually doing it. I'm playing bass in a rock band!!!! Woo hop!!! Edit That was supposed to read Woo Hoo, but I'm not going to correct it as Woo Hop has a certain charm, lol
