1. Does your chewing gum lose its flavour on the bed post overnight?
2. I always take it as a compliment. No one could ever describe my playing as flashy, so solid it will have to be. If I had to describe my own playing in one word, I would probably say 'tentative'. So I like to be called solid!
3. I was going to make another point, but I've forgotten what it was now.
4.
I'm still really happy to have my more dexterous (left) hand doing all the fiddly fretting stuff playing right handed but then I do most two-handed things right handed so I'm probably not as single-hand dominant as some.
Me too, pretty much this. Although I'm mostly left handed, I could never really decide which hand to play tennis or darts with. I seemed equally useless with both. PS - I don't think I knew you were a semi-lefty Kev, despite the numerous threads on subject and also having seen you use cutlery, lol!
5. Sometimes I feel as though my brain can only hold about 20 tunes at any one time. As soon as I learn a new song , one of the old ones seems to drop out of my head!! The only consolation is that it's much quicker to refresh your memory for a previously learned song rather than learn one from scratch.
6. Maybe he (I assume he) meant it would suit someone who was tired of tedious twiddling and wanted to try something more challenging. Maybe.
7.
Well that's it. At the time I would say I listened to progressive rock, but now 'prog-rock' is something else, and in fact is almost a derogatory term...
Unfortunately this has been true in recent years. But now I sense it's time to reclaim the term. :-)
8. Wonderful. I flirted with flamenco dancing some years ago. Lovely stuff. Not easy, but sometimes I wish I'd persevered with it. Especially as it is a form of dance that you can do at any age.
9.
yes I hate it when the audience clap along and I'm trying to play drums. Actually I hate it when our singer tries to clap along and have banned him from doing it
Yes I hate clapalong audiences too. They ALWAYS speed up. I hated when I was a tap dancer and I hate it now. And if I'm in the audience it really stresses me out. I feel compelled to try to hold the rest of the audience to the beat. Me against the rest of the room. Nightmare.
10.
Nope, and I was going to make that exact point re Purple earlier in the thread but never got round to it
True. Everything I liked in the 70's was called progressive.
11.
Went to see him play in Windsor back in about 1979, he was sat at the bar before going on, so egged on by my then girlfriend (now wife ) I went up to him, bought him a drink, starting gassing re Curved Air songs/arrangements.... and he was late starting..oops Lovely chap, still had the wild hair then.
It was about 1989 when he turned up at this party in Slough. Must have been a friend of a friend. His hair was less wild by then IIRC. :-)
12.
Shell..I think I love you, so rare to hear another Curved Air fan waxing lyrical!! Young mother done live is excellent, but on that album I have a soft spot for Piece of Mind. 15 odd mins of prog goodness
I met Darryl Way at a party once. Well, I say 'met' though I didn't actually speak to him. But I was in the same room as him! I regret not speaking to him now, but I was too shy in those days.
13. Second Album, Curved Air. Probably.
14.
nailed it again Bilbo
Yep, end of thread.
15. Yes, I love a nice solo me. Drum solos as well. It's best not to let them go on too long though. Keep it short and sweet.
16. Good question. I do a lot of open mics and jams, and I'm always plugging in and out of unfamiliar equipment (not a euphemism, discreet! ) :-) I'm always terrified of sticking something in the wrong hole, or pulling it out and blowing it up (honestly, really not euphemism!). A universal system of hand gestures to sound persons would be very helpful.
17.
No, but the Boss FX unit was!
Top answer! :-)
18. Used to happen all the time with my old band. Guitarist and drummer constantly widdling, bashing and clattering before and in between songs (in rehearsals). I used to have to get on the mic to make myself heard (just to ask 'what are we doing next, 'shall we take it from the bridge?' etc) If that didn't work I'd give them a 'Time Out' T sign. I could have used other signs, but I wanted to remain friends, lol
19. I liked the BC column as usual. Nice writing, Sylvia. I like your picture on the first couple of editions. It was eye catching and hopefully drew people in. I agree it's not really needed now. At least not such a big pic - a small headshot would be nice though. I struggled with the font and background colour combination. Not very easy for a long-sighted git!
20. I've never played it, but I've always thought Autumn Almanac by the Kinks is really interesting, the way it has 3 different parts to it. Another good 'un is Alfie by Burt Bacharach. It's like a whole musical in one song. I would so love to be able to sing that!
