Is there anything you can't play after a certain age?
How literally? This could end very badly with a song like Longview...
Precisely my fear!! -
Oooh what fun!
I think as well, the thing with this is when you play said "young music", don`t play it trying to be young, play it being you.
This is absolutey true, and I think really explains why some performers seem to get away with it and others don't. I can be 'me' doing Teen Spirit, or any amount of angry shouty stuff. It was just that I thought I'd have difficulties with the dozy teenage w***er attitude. -
Some nice sounding gear here, can't wait! If you're interested, there's a little video tour of the studio here:
There's windows and daylight!! And radiatiors! Luxury!
You are probably too old to stand up and rap like a gangstar to your hommies other than that anything goes!
Oh God yes. Nothing worse than Dad (or Mum) rap. Even when done as comedy it often falls flat. -
Actually it is two words but it doesn't mater that much. Dirnt who plays bass is 41, so far from a teen himself.
Ha ha, I just assumed I'd got it wrong! (You'd think it doesn't matter, but I was just trying to stay one step ahead of the army of pedants on here! ) Well if it's still good enough for Mr Dirnt, I'd better embrace it then. So to speak. -
Hang on a minute . Are you telling me that there are people writing hit songs about being a lazy teenager and lying around and w***ing ? If I had known that at the time I could have been the Cole Porter of my generation !
Well I guess there was 'Pictures of Lily' for a previous generation. Not you of course Dingus, you are much too young for that! -
They're just songs, not personal statements
That's very true, but I tend to be sort of 'living the lyrics in my head' when I'm performing. (Hope that doesn't sound too pretentious for a newbie who only does jam nights! ) So I'm kind of adopting a demeanour that goes with the song. It's really difficult to explain and probalby completely un-detecable by anyone in the audience! It could stem from being a actor first and foremost I suppose. -
And I guess 20th Century Boy is very last century now
Lol, I hadn't thought of that! My other band does 20th Century Boy - the lyrics are a bit nonsensical anyway! -
Greenday still do it and they are old.
Interesting. I know virtually nothing about them. I see from your post their name is all one word Living and learning, lol -
"I hope I die before I get old"
That one's out of the question for me anyway, cos I could never manage the bass solo! -
I'm 20 years older than the rest of my band (the better band of the two I'm in). This is fine by me as I think most music deals with universal and ageless themes of love/loss/parting/anger/frustration and general madness. I don't feel awkward about it, even though I am older than Drummer's mother. But now they want to do Longview by Green Day. I wasn't familiar with it, but at first I thought 'ooh good, this has an interesting bass line' But now I'm wondering if I'll look a bit ridiculous stood there while they're all singing about teenagers lying around w***ing. (Not that the rest of them are exactly teenagers though!) When it comes to this bit, I think I will look more like the mother in question: 'My mother says to get a job But she don't like the one she's got' So this has got me thinking .. are there any songs you can't get away with after a certain age? Or is it OK as long as you're not actually singing the lyrics? I'd be intersted to hear what the rest of you think.

3 senior gents, moved to tears by their own song

I thought that was lovely. Thanks to the OP for posting. -
So far it's looking like 1. Tayste - 1970's Ampeg B-15, 3 Overwater Originals (5 string, 4 string, 4 string fretless), Fender Pawn Shop Mustang, full pedalboard. 2. 64k - Fender Jazz (Modern Player), Roland GR55. 3. tauzero - Tecamp Puma 900, TC RS112 (if there's room for more cabs), Sei 5-string everythingless, Warwick JD Thumb 4-string, Antoniotsai 5-string, probably a couple of Zoom things (B3 and/or MS60B) 4. seashell - Fender P and possibly Ibanez SRX300 5. cheddatom - providing the venue! 6 Ian Savage - to be confirmed 7. ubassman - to be confirmed Not a huge crowd yet! Perhaps we need to put it in our signatures to publicise it for a bit?

Gotta love the Quo. 'Down down'is one of the best songs for headbanging to ever.
-
I've always been a huge fan, long before I ever dreamed of playing bass myself.
-
Missed it. Did he play or was it an interview?
I'll be playing it by ear as to whether I can get, doing a 'take-it-as-it-comes' summer holiday this year so don't know when I'll be in the country - if I am I'm there! And Shell, car-share sounds good to me
OK Ian, I'll PM you nearer the date. :-)
