1.
I am attending both days - my first time. I will probably hover about the place looking very awkward and be too embarrassed to speak to anyone or try anything out. The credit card is definitely staying at home.
I was hovering embarassedly last year! My advice is to get yourself into some performances and Masterclasses - then you can just blend in with everyone else and don't actually need to speak, lol Seriously though, no need for embarassed hovering this year thanks to ped and bluejay for arranging the 'BC Corner'. We can lurk around there and team up with people if we feel awkward about doing things on our own. Cosmo - I'll add you to the list next time I update it. Will wait till I get a little batch to do together.
 2.
Not sure if this has been already posted, I quickly scanned the thread and couldn't see a reference..... There will be a lot of planned disruption on the tube on both the Saturday and the Sunday. Worth checking here when planning your journey: http://www.tfl.gov.u....aspx?offset=13
Thanks for that info - really useful. Looks like I sould be OK on overground from Clapham Junction. Are you going on the Sat or Sun?

 4. +1 for Good Times by Chic. Also the keyboard intro to Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds which my teacher showed me how to do in bass. Not that my friends want to listen either , but I strap them to a chair and play at them till they beg for mercy
 5.
For a me great bass players fall into two camps: the session guy/side-man who goes beyond just "playing the song" but rather lifts it to a new level but in a non-intrusive way, and the individualist who's strong personal style defines the sound of the band to some degree. Exercise for the reader - listen to "run to you" and imagine what it would sound like if someone had just plodded out root notes.
Good post. I know what you mean about Run to You. I had to learnit for a bit of a concert just before Xmas. Had never really listened to it before, and now I love it!!
 6. Well, I can't help but I'm bumping this thread for you
 7.
OMG! Does that mean that all those middle aged women who sing "elb I nissabody, elb nodgist enabody, elbeye niddabody OOOOOOH" at me on a Saturday night are actually Belgian, not drunk?
I thought you only played folk music? Have you got a sideline as a karaoke DJ?
 8.
You're welcome to it, of course - but if you Google it, you'll see it's not available! Sugarshack would have been our number one choice otherwise, it's a great band name. I think the two-word version 'Sugar Shack' has gone too. Most decent names have. We practically had to come up with a random string of words just to get something that hadn't already been taken.
Ah but I don't think there's a Black Country Sugarshack. Which might be a better name actually. Hmmmmm...
 9.
One of my first "grown-up" bought albums was "Ummagumma"; I've a lot of time for PF. And they used Hiwatts - bonus!
My fave PF album!! Possibly...although Meddle is pretty crucial listening as well. Nice to see another Ummagumma fan ..a somewhat overlooked album I feel. BTW - I've always pronounced it to rhyme with 'drummer'. But some kids at my school used to insist it should be pronounced to rhyme with 'boomer'. What do you think?
 10.
I can only agree. Looks like another troll OP cunningly calculated to piss off PF and SB fans now the Beatles one's settled down a bit. But is it art or entertainment?
Definitely this.
 11.
Gerroff, those names are for the OP!
I baggsie Sugarshack! If I manage to get this band off the ground with my girlie singer friend we'll be looking for a name. When we did the Xmas concert at the music academy we were introduced as 'the adult band'! This was to distinguish us from the day students who were doing BTECs and such like - but it made us sound a bit suspect!! Then one of the young female students called out 'They should be called Rouge cos they're all dressed in red'. Singer and I had deliberately arranged to be colour co-ordinated, so I'm glad it was noted. Anyway, we are now using Rouge as a working title. I think it's a great name but possibly a bit girlie if we have a couple of lads in the band (as is likely). I think Sugarshack sounds cool for a mixed male/female band!
 12.
I have actually watched quite a few episode of Dad's Army, but never that one. Funny though. I must get a watch of that episode at some point!
Yes you must! It is the classic Dads Army episode of all time!
 13.
I didn't make it in time! Mark was just too fast in spotting it and replying to the post...
Yes, in like Flynn as usual! Anyway, I'm not going to edit it now. Waaay too late.
 14.
LOL, some of us band WAGs have perfected the art of attending rehearsals and being supportive, and only expressing opinions when asked. I've always been welcome, in fact invited to rehearsals with all the bands my ex partners played with (not just by the partrners but by the bands). So I agree, it takes a particular kind of girlfriend to be involved at that level and not get on everybody's nerves within 30 seconds. That doesn't mean she's not a good partner in general, just not in this case.
When I was a WAG, he didn't even like me going along to gigs let alone rehearsals!
 15.
Oh my, I had noticed that and hoped Mark wouldn't...
OMG you should have PM'd me!!!
 16. Well I can't share my experiences yet, but I'm glad you raised this question as I'll be interested in hearing some opinions. I'm feeling it's time to branch out from my band as I'd like to try out a few more ambitious things. So I'm trying to get a little side project going with a singer I met at the Academy where I have my bass lessons. We played together in a 'scratch' band of private lesson students that was put together for a Christmas concert, and we got on well. So we've been talking about having a bit of a jam with some other musicians to try out some things with a view to maybe getting a band together, We've booked a rehearsal studio for next week. The drummer from my current band is cumming along, although he's not interested in being in 2 bands long-term so we may have to find another drummer if things take off. Anyway, singer said she said she could rustle up a guitarist. Turns out that said guitarist is her fiance. I was wondering if that might be a problem of any sort. I had a feeling that if I mentioned this fact to any of the musos I know they would all say 'Noo! run away!'. But then again, I have acted in plays and musicals with married couples before and no problem. Added to which I believe there are some BC members who are in bands with their other halves. For instance tauzero I think? So maybe they will come along to this thread and advise us! Edit: just seen Sarah's post above. That's encouraging, thanks Sarah
 17. What a lovely thread this is! All the mean old grumps should get over here and start to lighten up a bit
 18. Or..a Host of Bass Gods :-) (that includes women BTW)
 19. Oh no how dreadful. :-( I had the pleasure of seeing them play B'ham Town Hall a couple of years ago. It was a really joyful evening. This is so sad.
 20.
Complete on this occasion with Acoustic Bass loveliness
Although not a massive soul/funk or whatever fan, I absolutely love this. Reminds me of happy, happy summers when I was a sixth former. And a certain lad whose initials were SP - but that's all I'm saying
 21. And if I'm allowed to have a Bonzos song as well, I would like to have this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cS4vUaNQKHk I hadn't seen this version before - found it on Youtube. Very silly and very funny. Spot the deliferate mistale with the lyrics at about 3.00
 22. Lovely to see scuh a wide range of life affirming music here. I would like to suggest 'It's Getting Better' sung by Cass Elliott http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nNpx7CWLbCk
