We did our usual monthly jam night slot. Didn't go too badly considering our limited talents! I had put some new Status Hotwire Halfwound strings on my Fender and I really loved the sound and feel. Someone on here recommended them, but I forget which thread it was in so I can't thank them. If it was you .. thank you for that recommendation. I really love these strings!! And they arrived 48hours after I ordered them. Result. Anyway, back to the 'gig'. We were lucky enough to be on after a succession of guitar boys widdling away on their own to loops or backing tracks. So although any one of them was a better musician than any of us, we were the first proper 'band' on. And I think the punters like to see a full on band - its just more (dare I say it) 'entertaining' So we got quite a good reception. Started with House of the Rising Sun. Sorry folks, but it is one of the few songs we are all capable of playing. Drummer went at it a bit faster than usual - I think he was over excited because both g/f and mother were in the audience. I didn't really mind as I'm sure the punters had heard 'House' done in numerous different ways at numerous different speeds, so ours was just a 'brisk' version to add to the catalogue We then did 'Wild Thing' in honour of the late great Reg. Singer announced it was in tribute to Reg Presley. You could see smiles and nods from the older members of the crowd, but the younger ones seemed to be unaware of the name. All the more reason to do it then, thinks I. Went down pretty well, even though I sort of stoppped playing before the song had finished (just forgot how many verses there were ). I shot the guitarist an admiring glance and pretend I was letting him do a little solo unhindered, then picked it up again. Ended our little set with an 'original' blues ( as original as any blues can be). None of us made any mistakes for once and singer really went for it! So it went down really well and we got a good hand. Good job we finished with that one! Band on after us were excellent as usual . I hate it when we have to follow them (as occasionally happens at these jam nights), but last night it was the right way round!! Onwards and upwards....
You do know it's being held indoors?
Yes actually Just not looking forward to standing round on a freezing cold station platform on the journey. Which reminds me of some further info for people who haven't been before. There is a cloakroom where you can check your coats in. So if you want to wrap up warm on the journey you won't have to lug your coat about over your arm all day! Or leave it on and 'not feel the benefit' when you go back out (Heed this advice from old aunty seashell about wrapping up warm! Sometimes I am so rock n roll I surprise myself! )
The Gallery is the best bass shop in London. I can go there and try beautiful gear. The atmosphere has always been very friendly without being pestered. And the bonus is that I can bring my wife and she will play with the cat (and forget how much money I spend ... hehe)
There's a cat??!! In a bass shop?? I'm booking my train tickets to London straight away!

Queen, another one bites the dust... E or F minor?
seashell replied to iconic's topic in General Discussion
I'm glad you posted this cos my bass teacher taught it to me in E minor. But when I tried playing along to a CD I thought it sounded a bit off. Not just me then! I think it's E and a bit minor, like you said! Lol -
What's that, Flipper, you've got a really good Fender P for sale? And you're selling it why exactly? Ah, I see... it's because you can't actually play bass. Because you're a dolphin. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azEOeTX1LqM

I must admit I was expecting some sort of apology or 'hands up' for last month's howlers.

What 3 Bands Did You USED to Think Were Great?
seashell replied to Lowender's topic in General Discussion
There are bands that I didn't used to like but do now. But there is nothing I used to to like but have stopped liking. If anything has given me joy, I still love it However...I will admit to pretending to like stuff in order to look cool, whereas in actual fact I would really rather not sit down and listen to a whole album's worth. Soft Machine leaps to mind. And Magazine. -
Woah! Calling bluejay, Seashell, SpaceChick & Co. !!
Sorry, did I miss something? I was too busy knitting a basket of kittens..

I used to be able to practice tap dancing in my head. I could sit on the bus going over and over a difficult step. It definitely helped me improve certain things I was trying to perfect. I can't do it with bass playing though. I think you have to reach a certain level of competence to be able to visualise it in your head, and I am really not there yet.
Please see this thread! I shall probably lurk around there quite a lot in between the masterclasses and performances.

Many thanks for the input guys! A range of opinions of course, but all useful. I've decided not to go for it in the end. I think what mainly put me off is what Dave said about the difficulty of getting a good view at Hyde Park. I'd probably take a punt if it was a bit cheaper or a bit nearer to me, but to travel down to that Lunnon and then not be able to see anything has put me off a bit. Now I'v just got to think of a nice way of telling my friend..
-
Sounds like a comedy name to me. Which is great if you are a comedy band. Less so if not.
-
Oh bloody 'ell, have you seen what he's got now?
-
A friend has asked me if I want to go along to see Bon Jovi at Hyde Park this summer. Hmm, I'm not sure. Much as I am a bit of a headbanger, I was never hugely into those big 80's stadium rock bands. But on the other hand sometimes a big live concert can be really enjoyable in itself. Or not. What do you reckon, Basschatters? Has anyone seen them live recently? Is it an experience not to be missed?
