  1. Good advice above. I've worked with a few guy's who have very good hearing and have often pointed out/demonstrated subtleties with EQ-ing that I just didn't hear. You could say they had a trained ear and I did not. But I have found that one's preferred sound changes over time and it's a joy to experiment. Not to forget that with bass in particular, room acoustics play such a big part, and always move around when practicing to find the right spot.
  2. The Hofner Violin bass is ply. It's a favourite of mine because of the lovely hi-fi-ish tone. Yup, my most expensive bass, (the HCT model), and my favourite noodling bass to pick up.
  3. Have a look at the TCE combo range.
  4. Yes I agree about the music of our teen years always being special. To be able to to play a tune or sing a song and give someone a moment of "oh yes I remember when and where" is that music-magic thing, that ability to entertain. The best audiences for a group of my friends are the freebies they do for the local old folks homes. Many residents can't remember what they had for breakfast but they know the words and sing along to every song. So thumbs up for nostalgia - a place and time of happy memories. At my music club we have teenagers to OAP's. Some of the younger members perform their latest compositions and everyone always gets an encouraging round of applause whatever, much like an open-mike night. The previous comment about more performance than musicality rings true to a great extent. I find much of it very repetitive with a whinging and whining quality and striving to reach a crescendo far to early and then not having anywhere to go. But we all have to start somewhere.
  5. I had one when they first came out. Build quality was good and neck/action very good. Limited palette tone-wise, (not high-fi), but a solid bass to gig with for rock/pop. Not light-weight more medium-weight. There are lighter SS. The Mustangs are not heavy and of course all the Violin family are lighter which is one reason why I tend to prefer them.
  6. Upon reflection, oh dear, I'm afraid not. I play music from the 20th century, mostly jazz from about 1930 on. The majority of pop music would be late 50's into the 70's. As for anything more recent I do listen occasionally to current stuff via TV and radio but off-hand I can't think of a single performer or tune that has captured my attention of late. My inordinate abhorrence of Rap is unwavering. I am dismayed at the prospect of being labeled an old dinosaur but in truth it appears to be the case.
  7. Bought a nice Hiscox case from Jack today. As usual on BC a smooth transaction, thank you.
  8. Hi, I'm interested in the Tele-case. PM sent.
  9. No, no. THRUST is a compressor trying to emulate a tube-like sound. Nothing could ever replace HEFT. HEFT is indefinable and buried to deep in the psyche of dedicated bassists. It cannot be defined or supplanted only aspired to.
  10. I bought this a couple of years ago. The body had been badly repainted. There is no serial number but I think it's one of these: https://www.olx.bg/ad/yamaha-motion-bass-ii-bas-kitara-CID618-ID7m4tT.html There appears to be a number of different models. I believe they were marketed as a student model. How old I don't know. When I got it I was surprised at the light weight, (3 piece basswood I guess). The finger board action felt good and the pickups, (2 humbuckers), quite loud. When I get round to rubbing it all down I'll get a respray and try to match the warm white of the headstock. I've got a chunky Gotoh bridge and a set of flats to fit. I expect someone out will have more knowledge to share on these models. Appreciate any information.
  11. They look very similar on the outside but maybe it's 2 different beasts. To compare them would be pointless, better to highlight the difference between them so to decide whether or not they're your cup of tea. BQ250 £199 BH250 £222 I think the BH is the better deal here for an extra £23 you get the toneprint and therefore a choice of compressor or effect to download. A mute button I don't want to do without and the built in tuner is just so convenient, (always on it provides an LED display of endless technological fascination). Reading the bumpf, TCE describe the thrust control as giving punch and the ability to capture every nuance of your playing. So, Thrust = a Punch and Subtle control, (not sure if those 2 things are compatible). We all tend to sing the praises of our own choice of gear and that includes myself although, out of curiosity, I would like to try out other small class D heads and compare them to my BH250. But I do think TCE got it right with the BH models. I've just hit 70 years of age and smile when I lift my Tiger cajun bag containing a BF One10 + BH250 and leads into the car boot, (20lbs), remembering all the years I lugged heavy gear around. If I was still gigging regularly, (weekend warrior-wise), I'd think about a BH550 and a Two10 but for the charity events and music club events et cetera nowadays, I'm sorted. Having had time to think about why TCE should launch the BQ models maybe they're just emulating a no-bells tube head in class D format. And maybe everyone else here on BC sussed that out straight away and it's just me that's been slow on that point. Maybe the only questionable aspect then is the labellng of the tube-like compressor control as 'Thrust' which some of us found amusing. IMO TCE offer good products at good prices and I would encourage others that they are definitely worth considering when looking for new gear. I look forward to a review of the BQ250/500 as soon as a fellow parishioner buys one.
  12. Only familiar with the BH250 but find that a little adjustment goes a long way so have to be quite gentle with the EQ controls. As far as the wattage out goes they really have muddied the waters. Shame as I like the BH250 and the BG250-208 I've got. They are good products at a reasonable price that suit my present needs. I roughly halve the claimed wattage ratings.
  13. Interesting, thanks for the link.
  14. I really can't think of anything I want really so no, sorry.
  15. I have the BH250 and have for several months have successfully resisted the temptation to buy the BH550 attracted by the hi and low mid controls rather than the 1. So I'm surprised to see these BQ heads. Prices seem very reasonable if the $ matches the £ on release. https://www.notreble.com/buzz/2018/08/05/tc-electronic-unveils-the-bq250-and-bq500-bass-amps/ I do like the built in tuner on the BH so the BQ heads wouldn't be for me and I have the Spectracomp toneprint loaded which I use sparingly. But what is this THRUST ? We can all I think appreciate HEFT as a desirable and often elusive quality, but THRUST! I can't imagine a sound engineer calling for a bit more THRUST from the bassman - " can you give me a bit more THRUST please". Would you be happy with a THRUST control on the front panel of your amplifier in full view of all and sundry? Methinks that THRUST should be left well and truly in the remit of those singers who gyrate and strut through their testosterone-fuelled performance. If a product of the marketing department I don't think THRUST is something a right-minded bassman would aspire to. I may be wrong but I'm of the opinion that THRUSTING has it's proper place elsewhere than in bass terminology. Do we not, as a fraternity, have a duty to resist the introduction of vague descriptors? THRUST indeed, whatever next?
