1. Anyone who would like a set of roundwound taken off a Mustang - going for free, just pm your address & I'll post them off.
2.
I once bought a set of 5 Rotosound flatwounds from a local store. They were the only flatwound 5s they stocked. I fitted them and the G string snapped when getting it up to tension, so I took the strings back. 1 month or so later I eventually got an answer from Rotosound - they gave me a replacement G string. That was it; after a month of waiting for some kind of response. I'd have expected that if they'd allowed the shop to change it on the day, or within a week. But a month? Then, when fitted, the tension was so great it was like playing on fence-wires. Never again.
That was unfortunate & a poor experience sticks in the mind. I can only reiterate my own recent experience with Rotosound that there customer service is 1st class. They are in the UK & therefore just a phone call away. I exchanged emails, took measurements & recieved spot on advice. I use flats on my 5 medium & shortscale basses & have 4 different string makes each quite different in tone & tension from quite bright, almost zingy, to fairly dull. The Jazz77 seem to me to occupy the middle-ground for both tension & tone which is why I chose them for restringing my Viola & my Mustang. My Tokai SG I think has LaBella & is very warm & bassy with lowish tension. My Aria I'm pretty sure has Chromes which are very bright with a high tension. Both sets are what they came with & I don't change flats as long as I'm happy with the tone, the tension & the feel. I've used Tru bass on a Jazz & they sounded very good. I tried D'Addario tapewound on the Tokai & the Aria & both lacked any definition. Incidently the Aria, medium scale, needed long scale strings with the D'Addario. It can be tricky getting the correct length string. Both the Viola & Mustang are short scale but need medium scale strings. The Mustang is through body stringing & the near 90 degree bend through the body isn't kind to some makes. It's a bit of a minefield with much conflicting opinion but that probably just reflects different tastes. I like to sit in the mix rather than cutting through the mix. A discussion on string preference is akin to asking which make of tea-bag is best.
3. I can't be the only one with a good word to say about Rotosounds!
4. I'm talking flatwounds. I find the Jazz 77 take up the middle ground between LaBella & Chromes, brighter than LaBella & less tension & not so bright as Chromes.
5. Once again my query with Rotosound met with prompt sound advice. Good products, good prices and excellent customer service.
6. Had my Ampeg B115E for several years now.
7.
Can anyone recommend these strings at all? Or perhaps these? http://www.stringsdi...DGaLRoCGg3w_wcB
I have used these on an Epiphone Viola and would do so again. I am currently re-stringing a Squier Mustang with a set of flats, given to me, that came off a Fender Mustang. I don't know the make but the cotton is a vivid green.
8. Thanks, it does look like a proprietary board.
9. I have the 'Spectracomp' loaded as the one effect as I like the little bit of extra 'body' it adds at about 10-11 o'clockish.
10. Maybe someone knows. For those of a technical mindset: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jun06/articles/loudandlight.htm
11. My recent purchase of a TCE BG250-208 had me wondering what module they used. Is it the B&O, keeping all things Danish so to speak. Also came across this article: http://www.audioholics.com/audio-amplifier/clone-amplifiers and this: http://www.icepower.bang-olufsen.com/en/company/history/ Will all audio/bass amps end up with the same insides, just different packaging & labels? I have to say I'm impressed with the performance my new class D amp.
12. Practiced with the 208 - drums & 2 guitars at a community centre hall & was impressed with the volume at about 3/4. I'm liking this amp more & more. Keep thinking that the addition of a Barefaced One 10 would provide me with a very nice lightweight rig for most occasions.
13. For sale Yamaha EMX512SC powered mixer & Yamaha padded bag. £357 posted. 14. Hope you get over this blip. I've had a bit of jolt myself lately. About 3 or 4 weeks ago I was asked to play with a jazz quintet, (amateur retirees), as their regular bassman was unable to make practice/gigs for the time being. What a baptism of fire that was. I felt like a passenger, desperately trying to pick out the root notes on the beat mostly in the strange keys of Bb or Eb. I couldn't believe it when they asked me back & I've since done 3 gigs with them. So, after 10 years in a covers band I feel I'm back to square 1, in as much as the bar has been raised a fair few notches. I've had a couple of helpful tips from fellow BCers & can only have a go & hopefully get to a passable level of competence. What a dent to my perceived ability! I sometimes get compliments at the music club I help run & often get up & jam with members on pop & rock stuff given the key & an idea of how the tune goes. But I've certainly got some hard work in front of me. Anyway just to let you know that there are other poor souls out there that have doubts from time to time. As luck would have it, the other band members are great & are helping me get up to speed. Best wishes for you.
15. I'm Impressed with the 'SpectraComp' toneprint.
16. I keep looking at the Barefaced One 10 as an extension cab for my TCE BG250-208.
17. Another Hotcover delivered today, Wednesday, bang on time, text & email specified. Ordered Monday , great covers, great service.
18. Not this century. Had a nice chat with Jet Harris once.
19. 67 yrs old Left ear 3kHz Right ear 6kHz I usually stand to the right of the drummer though stopped regular gigging a couple of years ago but, did not take up bass/gigging till my early fifties. As I expected, I've had hearing aids for the past 3 yrs.
20. Thank you Dad3353, that is so useful, I am so pleased.
21. PM me if you want a Roland Cube 30.
22. Believing the space between the notes to be as important as the notes themselves I often decline to put in run ups, downs or twiddly bits suggested by bandmates who to my mind often over-play their own parts. Also, knowing my own limitations, (self-taught latecomer), I need to get the root notes in my head first and then progress to embelishing the tune with passing notes etc as and when I'm confident that I've nailed the main groove. Knowing when what you're playing is just enough I think is the key to making a tune 'right', e.g. Ringo Starr. Be it a bassist, lead guitarist, keyboarder, drummer or whoever, showing off your virtruosity has to be done at the right moment to be appreciated. All the time gets you labelled a pain in the butt and shows a lack of discipline. Recently invited to join an amateur 'old-timers' jazz quintet I'm really struggling with some tunes as the CDs or Youtube clips tend to show a virtuoso treatment when what I need is a simple arrangement from which to pick out the groove. So I'm firmly in the keep it simple camp and often find some basslines to busy. When I can nail a busy bassline that 'has to be', I'm pretty chuffed to have done so. The main thing is keeping it tight. U2's basslines seem just right to me.
