Muting mostly depends on how clean you are...IMO I play lightly and a 5st so I use pickup or B st as thumb rests and don't find a need to go across strings any further but this evolved. If I had a dampening problem I would have had to deal with it. Some like an anchor, some don't need it... I wouldn't get too hung up on what is percieved as best as this in itself can be a limiter to another style/technique. As long as you can play your lines the way you want to... then you are there or thereabouts..!!
Yeah I'm the same as JT here. I used to move my thumb anchor consistently to the string below the required string for that particular run (usually not worth moving for less than 4 notes if at mid-tempo), but I've sort of lost practice of that/can't do it as fluidly anymore, and use the pup or the B, I think it's because my hands have grown and I can now do what I used to do attack wise without moving my thumb anchor.

I would, but East London is a no-go for me.

And now some more Swedish music, but this is eurotrash and I love it, great eurovision entry IMO. <iframe width="560" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Nfx0OMM2u0A" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> EDIT: well that didn't work, just copy the link :-)

Cocaine, by unsigned Swedish artist Nomy (this is not a Clapton cover (or a cover of the bloke he got it off whose name escapes me)) A nice acoustic version here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ru8ttej7t3E The original rocky version here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4USyCd4csA The latter is probably the better of the two

I'm no fender expert, and have never owned one but have played many. IMO the MIJs seem to be in some cases the nicest to play, and if not are at least a preferable trade off between the price and quality difference of the USA models. I would also add that the Marcus miller sig (4er) is by far the best fender I have ever played, and will probably buy one at some point down the line. It's a Japan model. I've never been able to try a 5er variant (USA made) but does anyone here know of the differences between them (i.e. your opinion on them)?

Sleek and professional looking site for basses that match. However, for me at least, a price list is a must. I'm aware top quality basses like these aren't cheap, but many even pricier manufacturers list every single one of their basses and all of their related options and the cost of each as well. I'm sure all prices could be placed into a single PDF?

NEW BASS! Epiphone Thunderbird Non-Reverse 5 string - Photos Added!
I'm sure it was that. I remember now the guy in the shop telling me this was normal practice in bass manufacture and that it couldn't be helped. He also convinced me that the P pickup (which had no issues) was the only one you really needed for my kind of music (at that age I probably had a Fear Factory shirt on). Being utterly naive, and already in love with the bass, I took it. First person to guess which reputable London bass trader that was wins a peanut.
Bass cellar, perchance? Yeah, it seems like this either happened by mistake every once in a while, or perhaps a certain run for a short amount of time had this problem with the basses. Which is a shame, because it is a beautiful instrument, I've rather bonded with mine over the past week or two as well. That's quite interesting on the year differences gust0o, do you have any idea how many of them were made, particularly the fiver? -
I've had a few finger breaks and tissue/ligament damage through sport/falling over drunk. Had to give up playing for up to 2 months with the one break - it was horrible, but better than not being able to play again by playing and making it worse!

NEW BASS! Epiphone Thunderbird Non-Reverse 5 string - Photos Added!
dc2009 replied to dc2009's topic in Bass Guitars
Sorry for the old bump. But just found out she was made in June 1997 in the Samick factory in Korea, and was number 26 off the run that month. FWIW this is the latest I have seen any of these produced (all I've seen on TB, Gibson and various other forums are 95 latest), also, there is talk of them also being made in seafoam green, as well as the sunburst I have. So I want to know, does anyone have any idea how many of these were made (4 and more ideally the 5 variant), and from when and until when? I saw one guy on a forum was told there were 750 shipped to the UK ever but no idea where he got this figure from! @ Cosmo Valdemar, one or two posts of former owners also repeated the exact problem you had, which some reckon was caused by a 4 string pup being put in to do the 5 string, and the A being the string that missed out on the J. -

Yamaha's are solid but IMO the sound is always a bit flat and weak, Bass Collection and Ibanez are solid choices. I will also plug a 4 string Epiphone Thunderbird, and if you don't mind it, you can upgrade to a pro-IV second hand for £200 or thereabouts.
Still amazed how they call that London. Don't think it's even within OysterCard zones haha.
It is, I once got a bus there drunk out of my mind, had no idea where I was. You should've seen the laugh the taxi driver had when I asked for Fulham! And having recently been to the Bass Cellar, I doubt I'll be going back. It was necessary to buy the strings there and then, and I was there rather than in Camden, but the guy didn't listen to me at all and didn't seem to care too much once he knew he was guaranteed a sale. Not been to the Bass gallery but will definitely have to soon.

Don't worry, they haven't fixed it yet, great laugh, thanks!

Get a long hairband, double stretch it over the headstock and let it sit at the first fret. You need a hairband that has good tension in this position. It will change the overall sound somewhat, but will reduce sustain and will keep everything clearer switching between strings.
-
My thunderbirds lack a few of the highest frets, and whilst it is probably my only complaint about them, it doesn't really matter. The only times I go up the dusty end are for self-indulgent bedroom playing (and the occasional bass solo with the band but I don't really need above 19 for those) - if I need the extra frets for some fiddly piece, i just grab my warwick if I'm not already playing it. I would also say that a 24 fret bass makes it easier to play stuff that goes up to say 21 than a 21 fret bass IMO, and you will always miss out on being able to play a few select things at home if you don't have a 24 fret bass somewhere!
The basic version of this is available in Guitar Guitar for £200. the only difference I can see is that it is a bolt on
New versions of this have the correctly located strap button. This is active, the basic is passive. This has upgraded pickups. This has a better bridge. This isn't just not bolt on, but is notably a solid neck through construction, different woods too! Anything else I've forgotten? Great review, I would recommend these basses to anyone. I had a pro-IV for a while, but sold it to ahpook on here to fund a pro-V, which is more my sort of thing, I would say though that the neck on the V is definitely a different kettle of fish or whatever the phrase is. I quite like the neck width though, as it remains thin and easy to play, it's in stark contrast to the non-reverse body 5er TB I have where it seems they squuezed an extra string onto a 4 string neck! My warwick is a happy medium, so I wouldn't change them for the world. If you want a TB buy this one, not a standard. If you want a new bass for this kind of price, buy one of these. If you are more content with mainstream looks and a flatter sound (IMO), then go get a basic yamaha or peavey (and I mean basic, you won't get neck through for this kind of money!).
-
If you are struggling to sell, though maybe you aren't now, as you have some interest, make sure you make people realise how much of an upgrade this is on the standard version. You have permission to nick my blurb from a few weeks back if you want (sold mine to ahpook). The pro has upgraded pups, bridge, is neck through with a 7 piece maple/walnut (i think) neck, with mahogany wings, active circuitry, and the new versions have the correctly located strap button - a serious upgrade on the original, for not much more dough! I would recommend this to anyone, as you can see I'm an Epi TB freak so trust my recommendation!
I've never properly played a SC, I'd love to but I've never had the chance.
Same, people don't tend to like me playing expensive gear in shops, something about looking like a student I think it is....
Did a gig in Sankt Polten 2006 with these 'erberts. We were in Moenchengladbach the night before, so had to fly from Dusseldorf to Vienna the next day. We had plenty of time...or, so we thought, till the German airline (can't remember which) cancelled our flight!!! After much discussion and raised voices, we were transferred to another flight. Our gear and 2 drivers were at the gig, unfortunately the rest of our crew were with us We landed at Vienna and jumped into the awaiting bus. En-route Phone calls were made to get the drivers to unload and, at least, get the gear onto the backstage area. In the meantime we are getting changed into our stage clothes while doing 130+kph along the autobahn. We arrive at the "Lovely Days" festival 10 minutes into our set time. The crew throw the gear on stage and plug up. The punters had been informed of our predicament... it was a case of "will they? won't they?" We walk on stage about 20 minutes late to an unbelievable reception and go down a storm. Know what? I still managed to tune up before the first song. BTW I'd like to say that we blew those 'erberts off stage...but that order is just a little too tall.
Dude you know I didn't read your post properly and thought for a moment you were Pino Palladino, then wondered why your BC name was Steve, boy do I feel silly
-
For any interested, Sean (Maverick) and I will be going. I'll probably be in the area for a pint or two first if anyone fancies joining me/us?
-
Whilst I quite like the look of some SCs (never had the chance to play one), even the Warwick, IMHO that 6 string monster he has is fugly, the shape looks pretty wrong. No doubting his talent though!

Bought a bass body and pups from Gemma. It was well packaged and arrived almost instantly! Would recommend - friendly communication too!
