Project: Passive-Aggressive (Thunderbird Content)

The great thing about the Model One is that the top sits flush with the bass body and has a generous overlap to hide many sins @PaulThePlug Personally, I would : - I would first line up the chisel (if I was using a 'factory sharpened, DIY Store' chisel straight out the packet, I would use a narrower chisel (probably 1/2") as that will cut easier than a wider one) along each of the lines and give it a light tap with a hammer or mallet to break the grain accurately along the full borders of the cut - personally I would drill down to depth first with a 3mm drill all along between the cut line and edge, to remove the bulk, keeping the drill bit as vertical as I can (the corner of a matchbox or similar sitting on the bass top near to where you are drilling is a great guide to see if your drill is perpendicular to the top). - I would then use the chisel to clear the remaining wood left between the drill holes, again using light taps with a hammer or mallet. I would start at the middle of the holes to clear the wood nearest the chamber edge and then, with the remaining wave lines towards the new edge, remove the wood a couple of mm (or less) at a time and just creep up to the new marked line. That way, you never have a large piece of wood breaking off and taking stuff off you don't want removed with it!! -
This might be one of the ones you mention, @Si600 , but this is a decent option: https://www.lysator.liu.se/~wizkid/music/thunderbird_mod/ It gets it another cm forward and, because of the angle of the strap exit, it doesn't 'straighten' the vertical angle of the bass quite as much as the 'in between the two bolts position'. But both options will probably work fine.

I'm a great fan of the DiMarzio Model 1. It's a pickup on steroids. Nice looking bass too -
Neck Profile Modification? Recommendations?

Well...is there life after basses? Is there really...? -
Hi @scrumpymike and all I thought when I retired I would get a bit more spare time... Once more I must send my apols that I won't be able to make it to this year's Bassbash. Have a great one, all, and please do keep me on the 'nudge' list for future events!! Andy

Neck Profile Modification? Recommendations?

Flattered and many thanks for the reference - but unfortunately @Andyjr1515 is still overly distracted by boring non-bass stuff -
And you are, of course, quite right. Yes - that was the other video he did on the Ken Smith. I'll ask nurse to increase the medication even further...
-
Maybe I'm getting mixed up - I did watch a couple.
-
That you're a jolly nice chap
-
I found this interesting. And Basschat and our very own @ped gets a mention too!! By the way, stick with it past the intro - they start going into quite a bit of detail of the knobs settings and playing style effects...

I've had some splendid veneers from https://designholz.com/en/veneer/?p=1 over the years. Service has always been excellent too, including shipping from Germany.
-
I agree - their synthetic ones, in my view, are pretty good (I presume it's GRP or similar?). I have one that came factory-fitted on the most expensive guitar I've ever bought (which maybe says something?), and have used them on my own and other folks basses and guitars a number of times.

Looks splendid, @W1_Pro You'll do absolutely fine. Just shout if you're not sure about anything but this type of project is perfect for starting to understand and tinker with the things that matter vs the things that you can take great liberties with
-
Gosh - that's nothing like it!
-
Which colour/type is that?
-
Looks splendid!
-
Anyway, @dirgefornovember - yours is a Just-a-Nut III and looks fine. It is held in place by the strings
-
Yes, you are quite right. I should be been more accurate to say that it is a Just-a-nut III. The Just-a-nut is the one with individually adjustable string heights and is much more expensive. The Warwick web site is here showing the brass versions of them both: https://shop.warwick.de/en/parts-for-instruments/warwick-spare-parts/just-a-nut/19702/warwick-parts-just-a-nut-4-string-brass
-
Yes - it's a Just-a-nut. This is how they are/were made - and they work well.
-
You are a very lucky chap. @Jabba_the_gut's basses are superb. Jabba is a real bass-builder's bass builder

Feeling smug - set up my first ever bass
Andyjr1515 replied to Minininjarob's topic in Repairs and Technical
Great stuff. Doing these sorts of things yourself is an excellent way of learning how it all works, what affects what and what you can take liberties with vs those things that need to be right. -
Nice looking bass, by the way. 👍

Ref Montana, they do a wide range of spray types. Some are more reactive than others to overspraying an existing finish. Worth a deep peruse of their info but, at the end of the day, usually only trying it will tell you if it's compatible or not. Hope this helps
-
Nice colour. Have a look though on their website ref the application advice. This does appear to be a wood dye that is designed to soak into the timber. As such, it will need the present finish to be completely removed down to bare wood. If you are good with that, it looks worth a punt.
