1.
I think it's a good idea. Even as a non-participant, I've found 'Owners Clubs / Threads' to be exceptionally useful both for technical stuff and for gauging views about certain products prior to purchasing them. Also handy when it comes to product iterations, changes, etc. Certainly, as with any gear thread, there may be a plethora of 'OMG - it's awesome' posts, but this is usually offset by informed opinion. As for allegations of 'elitisim' or 'exclusiveness', a forum just for bass players might be adjudged by the uninformed netizen to be a twee clique. We don't need any more subforums. But an initial post and a polite request to pin it would suffice. I would urge anyone who wants a brand-specific thread to start one. It's a free forum. Those who abhor such threads may simply ignore them. .
As usual Skank, I agree. And may I congratulate you on what a wonderful piece of poetry your last paragraph is?
2. Atomic Rooster - Death Walks Behind You.
3.
That's my point. In the 60's you had Joe Osborne, John Entwistle ans Trevor "Dozy" Davies all playing Jazz basses and sounding worlds apart.
Yes, you're right Chris - I was just making my boring old point about valve amps instead of DI, effects and transistor amps, that's all.
4. Valve amp and big speakers (12"s, 15" or 18") have more effect than all the other stuff, I think.
5.
Any preference on country of origin for an Ampeg?
You noticed . My experience only, but the US build, sound quality and reliability is so much better (IMHO).
6.
Fixed it for you! Seriously though, I'm not arguing against Valve amps, but they should they not be regarded as an oversized effects pedal. If you want the amp output to be a true representation of the signal that is leaving your pickups then it's surely got to be solid state all the way. Obviously you spoil the Fidelity by then squirting it into a loudspeaker! (and using a pick-up in the first place) Ducks for cover.
GEEEEEEEZ - how old are you? Have you ever used a valve head through a good cabinet at a gig with a smokin' band? IT AIN'T A FRIGGIN' EFFECTS PEDAL! It's one of the absolute necessities of life! (Strolls off mumblin' valves is better than transistors, Vinyl is better than CDs which are better than iPods, can't stand flash git slappin' harmonic so called bassists, bass is a rhythm instrument which should not sound like a grand piano etc. etc. )
7. And a snood, please.
8. Hear what you say, but try a MADE IN USA Ampeg V4BH 100W head. You'll have to go second hand but with an Ampeg MADE IN USA 15" cab, you won't go far wrong. Been using this set up (substituting a MADE IN USA Ampeg 4x10 Classic for big gigs) for years with no problems at all. Shuffles away quietly hanging onto a piece of wood........
9. Wouldn't happen in Suffolk, would it?
10.
I liked it a lot. But no mention of where all the money went!
I'll start the conspiracy theories, shall I? Electric Lady Studios and there was a guy by the name of Mike Jeffery too.......
11. Enjoyed that even though a lot of it has been shown before in different forms. Nice that the mans' shyness and humility came across for a change. BTW Dweezil - ever heard of Pete Townshend and The Who in September 1964, Wealdstone?
12. Crotchety old gits rule....
13. Make sure you get the pedal back BEFORE you pay the refund - not all buyers are trustworthy, I'm afraid.
14. As per Brensabre, a Bare Knuckles '52 Precision pickup is the answer - solved my similar problem. https://bareknucklep...r&series=p_bass
15. Thanks for letting us know - I'll watch and record this - my yoof on tele again - Just ask The Axis......
16. Reply to it, thanking them for being so up front, wish them well and go fishin'. Life's too short - go get another band with good people and have some fun. Best of luck......
17. The options back then were iirc: Rich Men - Fenders, Gibsons and top of the range Burns..... Comfortably Off - Hofner, Framus, Eko, Kay, Burns, Hagstrom, Futurama.... Poor Boys - Vox, Egmond, Rosetti, Fenton Weill and no namer Jap and Eastern Bloc basses...... Guitar Porn 1960s http://www.guitarrepairsuk.com/bells_catalogue.htm Other old duffers will add to / argue with the list, I'm sure. And of course there was the "never, never" method of buying - another series of tales to tell. Things started to change in the early seventies though I'd packed up playing by then so I can't tell you much until I started again in the mid 1990s when I was amazed to find the not only the broader choice, out how relatively cheap it was to buy a good gigging bass and rig.
18. You're not a drummer, are you?
19. I think 20 woodbines cost about 2/3d then and my weekly apprentice take home pay was around £1 5s 9d. In todays money, £1.84 and £21.10 respectively. A bargain at the time, but I had just bought a second hand Hofner Professional Bass for a fiver (£81.69 in todays money). Why did I need another bass?
20.
Hi, I'm trying to find out a little more about early, pre Phantom or Teardrop Vox basses. There is a Vox Guitars web site but all of the earlier basses seem to be either vaguely glossed over or not mentioned at all. I know that the really early ones, Contours, Bassmasters and Clubmans were built by Stuart Darkins and Co, Furniture makers in Shoeburyness, Essex and that they first had laminate bodies and Sycamore necks. I know that at some point production of the neck's moved to GPlan furniture. There is a query over whether this was in Hemel hempstead or High Wycombe. I know that some have the date of manufacture either written or ink stamped in the neck pocket and that the VOX decals could be rather hit and miss as to whether you got the right one to match the Bass if you actually got one at all. The words "Luthier" and "Guitar builder" don't seem to appear anywhere. Lol. The Vox factory was in Dartford, Kent. Were the necks and bodies sent there for final assembly or were they put together at the furniture factory? Did Vox develope and make their own pickups in house, a most likely option seeing they were building arrange of amps and keyboards, or did they buy them in from someone else like the Celestion speakers they put in their amps? I have emailed Martin Kelly, a chap who runs the Vox Guitars website but as yet I have had no reply. He is currently compiling a book but his main interest appears to be mainly Phantoms, Teardrops and the later Italian made stuff that looks very pretty, is fairly well documented and , to be honest, of little or no interest to me. What I would be most interested in finding would be any information from anyone who has a knowledge of the Dartford Vox factory, Stuart Darkins and co or GPlan at the time these were being produced. About 1960 to 1965. Yes, it was a long time ago but maybe you have an aged family member that worked at one of them who still has the ability to converse. I would also be very keen to find out if anyone would know where spares could be obtained or if they own a Clubman, Panther, Contour or Bassmaster what they think of these early mass produced British basses. I would appreciate it if anyone making 'fire wood' comments could contact me before November 5th. Many thanks, Nick
I lived just down the hill from Gommes (G-Plan) in High Wycombe from 1965 and a neighbour who worked there told me that they made guitar bodies and necks in that factory and if i wanted one he would get one for me - cost - 20 Woodbines! I declined so I don't know if they were Vox bits or A N Other species.
21. "Get one of those Warwick Dolphin 5 string thingys........" from the singer/guitarist in a blues band I played in for a few years.
22. Been playing bluesy stuff for many more years than I care to remember. The other day I was playing along with Jimmy Rogers "Chicago Bound" album on my Pbass - no problem. My young nephew then asked me to try his upright so I tried playing along with that. I found I was further behind the beat and struggled big time to get in time with Willie Dixon - I'd got the notes, but I was lagging further behind than when playing the bass guitar. This confuses me but I recall a Clarky comment at the SE Bass Bash which was along the lines of "....on a double bass, the note blooms....." Is this the reason that Double Bass players, even when they play electric horizontal basses (probably unconciously compensating their style as well), sound as if they are a gnats cock behind the beat and give that wonderful swinging, shufflin' feel to the music? Is it the "blooming" of the note that does it?
23. Well done - Great stuff - just like wot we were doing at their age in 1963. Best of luck to them!
24. I know you were and you're right - it was the dads reaction more than anything that got me riled and I would have hurled him diagonally onto the concrete slab if he weighed less than the 22 stone he appeared to be.
25.
Thought they were supposed to survive that sort of abuse...
Not from 3 metres up and hurled diagonally onto a concrete slab it didn't, believe me..........
