Playing this type of stuff (sort of) in a three piece band at the moment. Front man is great - Vocals, CBG, Guitar, Banjo, Mandolin, Fiddle, Slide.... Drummer/Percussionist uses a GigPig and a super assortment of banging shaking things. Tremendous fun, never play the same song twice the same way and the punters seem to love it wherever we play. And, best of all, no egos in the band whatsoever. Will let you know when recording is available.

Me? I can just get away with playing in bands and recording after eons of practise and gigging and I'm very insecure about it, too. Expert? Didn't The Monkees sing a song called 'Daydream Believer' once upon a time?

[/quote] This .... but left ear. and mine was caused by a drummer bashing a ride cymbal during set up about 2cm. from my ear whilst i was plugging in my amp. The constant hissing can drive me nuttier at times. BTW, the drummer went home that night with a very large bruise on his upper arm - funny that he hasn't done it again.

You thought well Clarky, but this one was taken a full 21 months beforehand in March 1968. Clarky will also vouchsafe that I'm not that sylph like figure today but I still have longer hair all over and sidies too. That's a red 1962 P-Bass in use there, as well.

Local pub gig with a '60s band. Played a few Rolling Stones numbers and this couple, well into their seventies, were dancin' like Jagger. At the end of the evening one of the other punters remarked on the old boys fitness and stamina. His missus replied " You should have seen him in the old days when he was taking purple hearts!". Question from my son who was roadie for the night "What are purple hearts, Dad?" Time for bed....................

[/quote] OK, I know this is not bass playing, but Hendrix was a leftie (played left handed) and a load of the stuff he played couldn't be done without using his thumb over the top. Try playing some of Robert Johnsons licks, even in G or D tuning, without using your thumb on your left hand. Personally, I don't really care what's right or wrong as long as it grooves, sounds good and fits the song (sez me who would definitely fail Grade 1 if I was examined.)

[/quote] OK, so how much time is being wasted at the moment trying to sort and repair broken kit? The root cause of the problem is the "BAD" students not the amps, leads, etc.etc. Eliminate the the root cause and the problem is solved. Therefore, train the students (by teaching and/or offering the deposit incentive), monitor performance and get rid of the non conforming elements. IMO this would be a damn sight cheaper and time effective in the medium term than continuously replacing kit however sturdy it is, and turning a blind eye to the small fraction of "students" who spoil it for everybody else. If these so called prospective musos behaved like this in a working environment they wouldn't last 4 nanoseconds. Make 'em aware of the problem which is impacting on everyone else and make them responsible and accountable for their own behaviour and actions. If necessary cancel lessons for the whole class occassionally and let the good'ns sort out the bad'ns themselves. It certainly worked at the schools I went to. (They weren't approved schools, either........)
